What made Johnny Cash’s version of Hurt so impactful was his age. It’s something that Trent Reznor couldn’t replicate the depth in his lyrics and performance because Johnny added a timeline to the song. In Hurt you can feel a struggle…but in Cash’s hurt you absolutely know it’s been a life time of suffering. With respect to you Sir, you have had a profound effect on this song for much of the same reasons. You softened the tone of the song which took away the original angst and replaced it with pain. And your age added a timeline to this song. We get an entirely new performance out of your version. It’s much more of story in that sense. Loved every second of it.

Coming from this man you really get the sense he feels these lyrics. He's lived that shit. I'm an aging metal vocalist, 56 now and I still love to perform. Not sure of this man's age but for him to have opened his ears to bands like Slipknot and System and find in them a deep connection is awesome. Speaks to the talent in the genre. Love this man's talent, love his open mind and heart to good music wherever he may find it and... I Love this man's doggie! You can tell he plays often and the pup enjoys it. I have two cats that 100% respond to my singing and music. Beautiful thing all around.

I love how the whole tone of the song was shifted just by simply playing the guitar softer and with respect- the more aged and softer vocals. "If you still care DON'T EVER LET ME KNOW" is maybe the hardest line, no matter who delivers it. Corey Taylor's delivery has more the tone of a threat, perhaps. Frank's delivery was more 'begging for mercy.' I felt that line way more personally here.
