Exactly what I'm looking at with my 04.5 Silverado. Thanks very much for a short, sweet and fully informational video. I had a professionally rebuilt transfer case last summer and now I've got fluid leaking out of what looks like the seal area. I'm taking it back out to my diesel mechanic (the shop that installed the transfer case) to see what he thinks. But if the fix is this easy, I might do it myself. Although it's in the teens with ice on the ground out there. Thanks very much! Very helpful and not over my head.
@ScubaMoto4 жыл бұрын
butchtheiw: Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you liked the video. Odds are, your mechanic replaced the seal when doing the transfer case rebuild. If not, then the seal may be failed. If the slip yoke leaking, like in the video, it's unlikely your mechanic even knew it was leaking; most don't even know it's an issue. If you clean things up with a degreaser, as shown in the video, you should be able to see if the leak is caused by a failed seal, or by the slip yoke and then proceed accordingly. Thanks again for the comment and for sharing.

Great video! Just what I needed. Thank you! After I noticed the signs of leaking, I changed transfer case fluid. Surprisingly, the fluid level was still at fill plug. Considering a weep hole is built into the seal, is it possible some leakage is expected? Thanks again!
@ScubaMoto Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you liked the video and that it helped. The shaft seal does not have a weep hole. The weep hole is in the rubber splash guard that extends from the actual shaft seal. The hole allows mud and water to to drain out so it doesn't accumulate on the shaft near the seal but mud does often find its way in there. Mud is the most common cause of seal failure since it's just liquid sand paper. If you can rinse inside the splash guard, the weep hole will help you expel debris and water during the rinse to reduce seal exposure to abrasives. I hope that helps and thanks for the comment.

Thank you for the upload. Will this procedure work for a 2WD 2007 Chevy Silverado rear driveshaft leak too or just the front?
@ScubaMoto6 күн бұрын
Any slipyoke leaking should benefit from the vacuum treatment shown in the video. But 2WD is a very different setup with no transfer case. The 2WD leaks usually occur at the tail shaft housing seal (at the differential) and sometimes at the output flange of the transmission. Depending on vehicle mileage and condition of rear bushing, you may want to remove the tail shaft housing and replace the bushing along with the seal and, of course, the housing o-ring. I hope that helps.

Already replaced my output shaft seal, got this same leak. Can I apply the RTV to the yoke without removing from vehicle? I know I wouldn't be able to do the vacuum part, but.. Just curious
@ScubaMoto3 ай бұрын
Yes. You know my preference but I understand not wanting a second removal of the shaft. Since you can see fluid dripping from the plug, you know the plug joint is loaded with fluid. That fluid slowly dripping out is what will interfere with adhesion of the ultra black while it's curing overnight. So to improve your odds, you could first clean the plug joint thoroughly with de-greaser, then air-blast the joint as best you can. Then clean again with de-greaser. Then a final alcohol rinse with a final air blast to dry it out good before applying your two coats of ultra black should give good results. Good luck with it.
@ericmattson93523 ай бұрын
@@ScubaMoto well on closer inspection, there is no cap there whatsoever... I can see into and see the splines, doesn't look to have been missing too long as it's obvious something was there before.. do I have to replace the slip yoke at this point or can a cap be installed?
@ScubaMoto3 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear that. The factory presses these in tight enough to seal but over time they torque loose enough to start giving up fluid. Like yours, some eventually fall out. I haven't seen anyone selling just the plugs. If you have a driveline shop in your area you could ask if they have one or if they're tossing an old yoke that might have a plug that's close in size. The metal caps on my beer growlers look pretty close. Finding something that's close and setting it in place with ultra black would require at least the work I mention in the above post and I'd still wonder about it. On the other hand, I've seen people stuffing racket balls and hand balls in there to try to seal the yokes so you could probably do better than that and anything is better than what you have now. New slip yokes start at about $80 and go up to a couple hundred bucks with and without new u-joints. Depending on what your time is worth, that might be the most cost efficient solution.
@chicanoperez6377 Жыл бұрын
Would it be true for the side?? To the transmission it’s self.
@ScubaMoto Жыл бұрын
Just to be clear, you're referring to where the transfer case joins the transmission. There won't be the slip yoke leak that I fixed in the video; but there is a seal on the transfer case side that could be leaking. I would start by de-greasing the area and getting an exact on the leak source. You can do the replacement without complete removal of the xfer case but both drivelines need to come off and you do have to separate the case.
@chicanoperez6377 Жыл бұрын

Awesome video! I didnt install the seal with the weep hole on the bottom. Do you think that i can remove the seal without damaging it to reuse it? Also Is it possible to put the slip yoke on the output shaft without aligning it up correctly or will it only go in one way? Thanks again!
@ScubaMoto2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. I'm glad it helped. You could probably carefully wedge behind it to pry it out intact but I wonder how well the Permatex Ultra Black would work to just plug the weep hole that you accidentally installed on top and then you could punch a new drain hole on the bottom while the slip-yoke is out. It might save you the risk of damaging it during removal. At least the seals are cheap if you do decide to R and R it and it gets damaged. The shaft in the video only goes one way. It had a wide spline that fits the channel in the slip yoke that you can see at 3:47. I'm not sure if they're all like that. I hope that helps. Good luck with it.

Same problem out of my 2008 gmc sierra 1500 2wd but my slip yoke has a hole in the center. Should i cover the hole with rtv gasket maker as well?
@ScubaMoto4 жыл бұрын
Jesus Ber: Transmission output is different than transfer case. The hole in the center of the slip yoke at the transmission output on your truck is intentional and should not be leaking fluid. It's designed to allow air to pass as the slip yoke slides in and away from the transmission.

I was curious to know what the red and tacky was used on? also once the slip yoke seal is replaced. do I just add additional transmission fluid through the dipstick like usual?
@ScubaMoto2 жыл бұрын
The Red and Tacky is just one more option other than molly to pack the splines. We're not working with the transmission, it's the transfer case. The transfer case has no dipstick. The transfer case has an upper (filler hole) and a lower (drain plug). The upper filler hole is the dipstick. Just fill until fluid backs out and then replace the filler plug. The vehicle in the video specs Dexron VI (10-9243) for the transfer case. I hope that helps.

Good luck finding it and please let us all know where it shows up.

Thx again for the quality clip and tips. Finally did that today as I had to replace both u-joints. Went to my local auto parts store to buy a new seal, only had SKF brand seals. Bought it anyway as I was too lazy to drive a few more miles to the closest GM dealer. Used the can tip to sit the SKF seal in. Never went in and I destroyed the can in the process lol. I simply put original one back in which seems fine anyway despite a very tiny leak. Wasn't leaking after a very short and slow drive after the repair. Dr.shaft was shaking like hell from a shot t-case u-joint. Now that this is fixed, I hope the leak wont come back. Did use the Ultra Blk tip on yoke though. It should help, too. Should have go to the dealership to buy oem seal. When you compare oem seal to skf side by side, the skf does look very cheap. The outer ring is narrower and thinner and inside design is different, too. It was the same size, right part, should have sit properly but didn't. I'm gonna return it. Morale of this story? Use OEM seal.

What about the metal sleeve that goes inside the transfer case? It’s like 3 inches long. How do I put that back in? It seems a bit tight to force.
@ScubaMoto4 жыл бұрын
Brian Tawny: It sounds like you're referring to the outer surface of the slip yoke sliding into the new seal at 5:24 in the video. You'll notice I have it coated with some moly grease to help it slip into the new seal. If it won't slide in, try rotating it until it slides in. Remember that there is one flat spot on the splines that must be lined up with the corresponding grove in the output shaft. That's why I mention the blue dot in the video. If you no longer have an alignment mark, just keep rotating the drive shaft until it lines up with the notch in the output shaft. Then it should slip right on. Let us know how it goes.

I have an 07 (new body style) Sierra 1500. The front transfer case seal keeps leaking. I’ve replaced it 3 times with a GM seal. Hit everything with emery cloth and made sure there is no burrs but it’s keep leaking. Any idea?
@ScubaMoto4 жыл бұрын
rellik53977: I'm understanding that you have a persistent leak where the propeller shaft (front drive shaft) meets the transfer case. It is different than the rear seal in that no fluid travels up the slip yoke so only the shaft seal is holding in fluid. This seal is more vulnerable to mud. Mud is bad. If a new seal leaks, the possibilities are: (1)-Incorrect seal. This seems unlikely 3 times in a row but you can easily confirm on install by seeing if the seal fits the front output shaft snuggly. If it does fit snug, see number 4. If it doesn't, it still might be the correct seal (see number 3). (2)-There is damage to the transfer case where the outer seal race taps into the transfer case. This would be visible and you could likely even feel it with a probe or even see the damage. (3)-Soil damage to the outer surface of the front output shaft at the seal contact. This one is likely if the vehicle is used off-road, particularly "Mudding". Mud is liquid sandpaper. If it gets past the shaft mud guard to the seal, the seal becomes a lathe and spins down the shaft diameter making a tight seal impossible. It continues long after a mudding session as it is difficult to get mud out of that seal contact even with high pressure washing because of the metal shroud. It's hard to spot because the shaft is evenly worn so it still looks smooth and has no burs or gashes. (4) Worn output shaft bearing. If there is lateral movement in the shaft, it cannot maintain a good seal and will wear a new seal quickly. This one you would likely hear and feel when driving but it can also be caught by simply grabbing the shaft and feeling for excessive lateral play. If it moves a lot, there's an issue. I hope that helps.

@brettboone10624 жыл бұрын
And two thumbs up for the tin can tip on getting the new seal installed!
@ScubaMoto4 жыл бұрын
Brett Boone: Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad the video helped. The shaft seal unit has two parts, the actual shaft seal and the rubber mud guard. When water makes its way into the rubber guard, you want it all to drain out. The weep hole helps expel the water faster. If the weep hole were on top, it would become an inlet for mud, water and other debris that would now be trapped inside the rubber guard. Thanks for watching and for sharing.

shunkajun: Fixing the transfer case leak with the two methods shown in the video shouldn't help or hurt your vibration, although you may discover something while doing the work. Without driving and inspecting your truck, I can't be sure what's causing the vibration. I've had tires cause it, drivelines, bent axles, bent wheels. Do you feel it in the steering wheel or more in the floor or your seat?
@shunkajun4 жыл бұрын
@@ScubaMoto Hi thanks for responding, I feel the vibration through the floor, I had the wheels balanced but i do see an occasional leak of a small amount of fluid that might be only part of a larger problem? thanks again

cody kindig: Thanks for the compliment. FWIW this fix is still going strong and cannot contaminate the transfer case (with pieces of racquetballs or any other contaminants). Thanks for watching and for sharing.

Grease? For inside the slip-yoke I used a heavy multipurpose grease on the splines. For outside the slip-yoke a light coat of moly.

Nice video and very informative. I noticed some fluid dripping from the bottom of my transfer case on my 2004 GMC Envoy. The fluid looked similar in color to yours (a reddish-brown). My first thought was the TC is leaking, but the fluid is not blue (GM AutoTrak). Wouldn't that be the transmission tail shaft leaking and not the TC?

Kevin Nassau: I'm glad the video was helpful. The transfer case on the Suburban in the video uses Dexron VI which is red. Trace the leak. It sounds like your transfer case. Thanks for watching and for sharing.

Unless you put it in, don't assume the AutoTrak fluid is blue.

Thanks for the great video. Quick question. Will a 2004 GMC Yukon require crank case oil or is this ATF that is transferred into the fill plug? Thanks again buddy!
@ScubaMoto3 жыл бұрын
jessemartz: No, not crank oil in the transfer case. AC Delco 10-4017 Auto-Trak II Transfer Case Fluid for your 2004 Yukon. I hope that helps.

Hi buddy. Me again. Sorry to bug you. I dropped the drive shaft and the slip yolk on my GMC Yukon had a hold dead center where you run your leak test. Apparently the compatible slip yolks I found all have holes. So when I run the leak test the alcohol comes straight out. Do you think the sealant you recommended will hold well on this hole. I’m sending you the link to the slip yolk: www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/dorman-oe-solutions/dorman-oe-solutions-slip-yoke/doe0/697558/v/a/17894/automotive-suv-2004-gmc-yukon?q=Slip+yolk&pos=0#

jeesemartz: Was your original slip yoke leaking through the hole?
@jessemartz3 жыл бұрын
@@ScubaMoto it appears that’s the case because the mess is located in that area where you perform the leak test. The transfer case seal was removed and was old and hard, but it doesn’t appear that any leaks were coming from there. The leak is coming from that hole which leads me to believe that the hole was once covered and perhaps it came off. I did find someone online that provided the following link online: www.teckpak-fitzall.com/datasheets/35746ys.pdf

Why is there a seem there? Like what’s it purpose. Jb weld that and you don’t have to wait overnight
@ScubaMoto10 ай бұрын
The seam is needed for the manufacture process of the yoke. Some of the press in plugs hold a seal, some don't. JB Weld might be fine. But its cure time is15-24 hours so no time saved. I had both on hand but the reason I used and recommend the high temp silicone is the flexibility under extreme vibration. But don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of JB Weld for a lot of things including: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWbciXuIiZmsidE Thanks for the question.

In case you haven't eaten your veggies lately, a short piece of 1.5" or 2" PVC pipe or a fitting maybe a better fit for that seal.

What does a job like this cost
@ScubaMoto2 жыл бұрын
Not sure, but a seal replacement (without the ultra black work that I show) ranges from a couple hundred to $500 depending on the shop and what else they find. If the slip yoke is also leaking as I prove in the video; most shops won't do the slip yoke plug seal work. They would just replace the slip yoke. So that would add another couple hundred or so. I hope that helps.
