You will see some familiar things, like High Five and 7th Heaven, but what does it mean? 7th heaven - happiness or prison?!
Feel free to comment if some of these you already knew and/or found interesting 😊

As a norwegian speaker I find latvian to be quite easy to learn. A lot of the words are similiar. And few are excactly the same as in my norwegian dialect. "Where" for example means "hvor" in norwegian and "kur" in latvian, which in my norwegian dialect, the word is pronounced excactly the same. For example: English: Where is the toilet. Norwegian: Hvor er toalettet. Latvian: Kur ir tualete.

Word ''kur'' is older then word ''toilet'' so really bad example. Toilet is same in any language it is modern word... Kur is actually from Baltic branch its not Norwegian for sure... Remember your language is Indio-European and Baltic branch is the oldest to set foot in Europe . Latvian is older the to say Norwegian, so it may be that word from Hunters-gatherers that came over to Scandinavia spoke Baltic language. Since the word Kur is common only in Baltic languages. There are many words like Kumpis that I can give example on that are no Norwegian words but they are used in it...

I thing we are strictly influences with old scandinavian (from vikingtimes), than medieval, lower german (platzdeutsch) sprake, than sweden influence 17 cent.. for example I don`t find where else sea was called - jura, then find be googletranslater in island- sjo, Telts, siļķe (sill, sild ), kase, skola, skurstens (chimney)

We are contemplating hosting a student from Latvia for a year. Hawaii is far, far away from your country. The person requested to not move to a small town. Maybe a small island would be okay. So, we're trying to learn some Latvian so we can impress our guest. I only know how to say "My name is Jennifer" in Russian and that's not as impressive. Your videos are super funny. Thanks!
@irregularLatvian
@irregularLatvian 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Jennifer! That’s great that you’re considering hosting a Latvian! I was an exchange student once too but in Canada. Well, by a small town we mean pretty much everything that is not the capital by Latvian standards. By American standards though - every city is probably bigger than our capital. So if you’re reasonably close to things like the movies, cafes (where the youngsters hang out), parks, malls and things like that - it should be ok. Your Latvian just wants to make sure that they have access to ways to integrate. I remember I lived in St. Constant in Quebec, which was an hour bus from Montreal. It was quite a project to go see my friends... And the bus stopped going at 22:50, so I could NEVER even dream of going to a later party. I felt pretty far from everything and very lonely. Hope this helps! :)
@jenniferlanclos9631
@jenniferlanclos9631 4 жыл бұрын
Well, that describes our town...45 minutes from a city and no where for kids to hang out! There is public transit, but it's mostly used by people who work on other parts of the island and it likely stops around 8:00. He mentioned going to discos in his bio and I had to laugh in a sad way. Nothing like that exists here! Unfortunately, he doesn't much have a choice on his destination, even though I tried to advocate for somewhere exciting, like San Francisco. Once he's accepted to a school, that's the town. He will have three younger "siblings" too. Hopefully he comes with a sense of humor!

@@jenniferlanclos9631 Aloha, Jennifer! Hawai'i has so much to give that he might not miss the disco. If you travel to the other side of the world, why do all the things you can do at home? I mean there are so many people who just dream of the island lifestyle. And for being the US, Hawai'i has a very good bus network, at least on O'ahu (haven't been to any other of the islands). Sure, the nighht life will probably not be an option, but there' so much other things you can do there that you can't do in Latvia. Especially if he likes water sports (surfing, diving, ....) and you live close to the beach.

@@oskarsrode2167 Aloha Oskars! Our exchange student did not come this year, but he will come (hopefully) in August for the next school year. We are currently hosting a student from Berlin (which dwarfs the big cities in Latvia!) and she is doing fine here. So adjusting from Latvia will likely be fine. Besides,we have had time to talk all this year, so he's already like family. 🙂

@timrozitis961
@timrozitis961 4 жыл бұрын
(I never realised how confusing that can be until you mentioned it - and suddenly I can undrstand th weirdness) I think it's a case thing depending on whether you're the subject or object. It sort of helps to think of 'man' as 'to me' and 'es' as 'me/I'. The confusing bit can be that (like many non-English languages) often it's not obvious that you're the object rather than the subject - so something like 'Man patik' (I like) actually more accurately translates as "is likeable to me"....But I', sure Germane would be able to explain that much more neatly.

I just tried to look and there are some pretty obscure explanations, for example this one.... “Div is a scouse (not exclusively, also used in Midlands) word for idiot. It is short for divvy which in turn is a corruption of Deva. The Deva Hospital was a well known mental hospital (since renamed the West Cheshire Hospital) on the outskirts of Chester. Chester was founded by the Romans who named it Deva.” Perhaps a sailor from Liverpool spent time in Latvia haha.
