It's so cool, stacking up words to make something completely different word, like in German. You can also technically do it in Estonian but there's some critiques on making compound words. But then again, it doesn't matter, go make up imaginary words :D A lot of the words you said at the beginning are also in Estonian such as "expensive" or "dear" (kallis) and "sunbeam" - for someone who smiles a lot and is smiling a lot, full of joy (päikesekiir). And as well you can say like little pig (põrsakene = põrsas + kene) or little fish (kalakene = kala + kene) Very good video though, paldies un labu vakaru! :)

Hey! Thanks for the comment! Interesting examples in Estonian! It’s weird that the two languages are kind of similar in structure but not at all in vocab. Kallis makes me think of how we say kale in Latvian (kālis) :D I wonder if we can find words in common ..

This is interesting! In Hungarian we have the term of endearment "drága" (no gender), which means exactly "expensive"'! I wonder if it's just a coincidence.

It's not really a nickname, but I accidentally invented the word "Biezpiennieks" when I misheard "bezpajumtnieks" on Latvian news. Probably 98% of Latvians can be classified as Biezpiennieki... 😄

Hello Anete, I have a question about the pronunciation of "ķ". To explain: I am native Spanish and there is a very similar sequence of letters in Spanish, the "ll", which is pronounced like lj. When I listened to Latvian lyrics, I noticed this similarity between these letters, like "dīķiem", which sounds a bit like a "kj", or is it because it follows the "ī"? As I said, it could all be purely an auditory thing. Thank you Anete for your beautiful videos! You really help me to understand dear grandmother much better.🥰🥰🥰🥰

no, it is not. The sound ķ (audio as kj) is an independent one,it has notjing to do with following it letters.

This nicknames are so cute ~ In italian there is not this problem of nickname because we just add a cute suffix to a word with the right tone of voice. I'll try to call a boy or a girl "Camel" 😏

Hi there thanks for your comment! I’m really glad you’re enjoying my channel. To answer your question about the nickname your parents called you, I think it has to do with the sound pigeons make. We say they “dūdo” and is this considered to be quite romantic and endearing when people do that. So maybe you had a very beautiful voice as a child, in any case it was a huge symbol of love :) Hope this helps!

Thanks for your comment! Dūdot means to hum, so dūda literally is from that word. But it is a sweet nickname for a very special lady, or a very beautiful lady. Like… babe/bella So think… special someone, music + beauty connotations. :)

English diminutives just don't compare. I remember from one of my 'Learn Latvian' books in a chapter on buying clothes the example was for buying baby clothes and the word they used *biksītes* is just the cutest thing! 🥰 There's no way to make that sound nearly as cute in English
