Festools are great, and whenever I'm in my nephews shop I enjoy the hell out of them. Then I come home and - like you - sit down and figure out how take the tool I need. Years ago when I raced a Lotus 61 formula Ford, I needed to build a new, Hewland Mark series gearbox. All the tools for setting up a new gearbox cost thousands of $$$. (Kind of like buying Festools)?!?! I figured out what I needed, used the old gearbox for pattern making, and made my own tools. My gearbox worked so well, several of my competitors came and asked me to build them new gearboxes.... Keep up the good work!!

for different size mortises add a 1/8'' _ 1/4'' piece of plyxie glass between the jig surface and the work piece table , this will allow the 1/4 '' bit to cut a 3/8'' - 1/2'' mortises , or aluminum but would stay away from wood, due to moister expansion, and warping , great jig

Guess I'm a little late to the game--the most recent previous post was five years ago. I watch wood sites frequently enough. Stumpy Nubs is a cut above the others. This one was terrific. Even if I could afford Festool I wouldn't spend the money. Given the prices they must be great tools. But I'll never know. I don't even know anyone who owns a Festool product. I won't build a homemade version of the domino machine either since I do woodworking for fun and cutting mortise and tenons isn't all that difficult even in the old-fashioned way. I do have a bisquit joiner and that works fine for most projects--you can double them up to get something more akin to a tenon. I may be wrong about this but I think bisquits swell slightly from the moisture in the glue which helps to make a really tight joint. Thanks for a great video.

Just built one from your plans. WOW! It's amazing. Great plans for only $8. Did some minor mods to it yet kept the same concept. Did up the first test board and it came out just a hair off. Made an adjustment to the fence and too care of the issue. Very impressed.

Wish I could give this two thumbs up. Best commentary ever, Stumpy. I could probably afford some Festool stuff, but can't see spending that much (a lifetime of frugality is why I could afford them). I recently splurged on a Beadlock Pro, which also uses loose tenons. But the drill I use is a Craftsman Professional corded drill I have had for 25 years. Keep up the great work, Stumpy. I love your imagination - and your delivery.

All I can say is I have earned a living working with wood for over 25 years and resisted the Festool invasion of my workshop until recently. I now have a Domino XL + the biggest router (OF2200, which I picked up second hand) and they are just very well thought out/designed. I have 5 other routers (bosch, dewalt and an 20 year old Elu) but they dont compare to the Festool. Making tenons with the Domino is so easy (I make my own large Dominos as they are crazy money)

I love it. Over at the car guys' site it is Snap On; for woodworkers it is Festool. After Lemello invented the equally over priced biscuit joiner, there were cheap knock offs, galore. I wonder why this has not happened with the Domino. They must have a great pattent attorney. After the SawStop fiasco, maybe nobody wants to risk it. There is also the Dowelmax that makes floating tenons with a simple jig and a drill. The jig permits you to drill overlapping holes and the tenon mirrors that shape You can buy their tenons or buy their router bit and make your own. Way cheaper, way simpler.

Mr Stumpy, I enjoyed your project idea, light hearted sense of humor and the “Alter Ego” character. Yes it is true most of us don’t drive a Bentley Mini van as the family truckster w/Garfield cat in the rear window. I did spen $180 for a SnapOn belt buckle and got a free torque wrench. Now, 20 years later, they won’t re-calibrate the torque wrench due to no parts and the buckle broke. Oh well. Enjoyed and WoW, nice shop.

I failed the test...as a hand tool worker I bought one for cabinetry which consumes more of my time now. It saves me so much time I never regretted the over $1000 (that’s the small one..there’s a bigger one). The plunge track saw is beautiful! (Don’t judge me please). I just can’t help myself..they do so much right...god help me I might sniff their catalogue again!

tyvek05 > I do use it in my new furniture production studio but it can never come near the house or barn restoration or antique furniture restorations. Among our several mantras is that if the tool did not exist (or was not used) originally on what we are working on it cannot be used now. No shortcuts..ever.

Corvus E. Do you have a problem with me personally? I think we can have different approaches for different applications. I don’t believe that I should bring out new tools to work on antique building restorations, cabinetry or furniture. On the other hand I have no problem using power tools on modern projects. It’s personal preference and customer preference. I also make my own hide glue and match period materials with period pieces. Whatever the customer wants...and what the market will bear...it has nothing to do with snobbery. It’s a personal preference.

I love it. I use an ancient cast iron horizontal mortiser, refitted for a router. I picked it up for nothing, but is the heaviest tool in my shop. Kind of ironic considering the small "dominoes" I cut with it. And I am in total agreement with your festool assessment. The more experience I gain, the more I realize that elite "precision tools" are a crutch for imprecise craftsmen.

I watch a lot of youtube vids. I always hear "give me a thumbs up if you liked it" but I never really knew what it meant. this time I actually I looked to find it and gave you a thumbs up. thank you for a good vid. I won't build one but I do like your style. great humor. and you are right about festool. GREAT tools and the engineering is worth the money...but you have have the money or be using that tool to make living to justify the cost. having done wood working for a living (years ago) I always bought better grade tools, and not from Home Depot or Sears. my peers did and they would brag about how they saved so much money over mine but they would only last a few hours to a season. many tools come in consumer, contractor or industrial grades. consumers are meant to be used on the weekend. contractor 5 days a week. industrial 24/7. they may have the same rating but they aren't. it's what's inside that counts. I have 1 1/2 hp a Porter cable plunge router I got at Home Depot because I only needed it for one little job. as long as I had it I thought I would use it on another plowing a 3/4 by 11/16 900 foot run in waferboard for a heating tube. I got about 20 feet and that NEW PC was huffin and gruntin like it was on it's last leg. I switched to that old 1 1/2 hp and it purred like a cat right through it and was ready for more. same size, same hp rating. if I make a pile of dough and retire and do a lot of hobby work I may buy some of the festool stuff, but until then I will get by with what I have.

Something people forget. Tools make the job easier but it's the time and effort put into o a piece that make it great. I have seen pieces of wood work that are beautiful but we're hand crafted with hand tools and seen some crappy pieces done with some expensive power tools. I will take the work done by home made or hand tools and day over over priced junk made with tools that cost more than 6 months of groceries or a year's worth of mortgage.

Joe Cavaliere - You haven't even SEEN the plans! It is NOT the same set of plans, and everything that was based on his design (primarily the side to side mechanism) was CLEARLY and COMPLETELY credited to him in the video! The rest of it was based on the same ideas that HE based HIS on! First of all, the tracking mechanism comes from MY bench top biscuit joiner jig, which I designed before he ever made his jig, so maybe you should ask if he "stole" that from me? The router mount was used by Matthias Wendell WAY before that guy used it, so maybe he "stole" that from him? The fence design was used on my Harbor Freight biscuit joiner WAY before that guy used it, so maybe he "stole" it from HF? Festool came up with the entire concept of the side to side bit, so maybe he "stole" it from Festool? In fact, the little triangle cutout on the bottom was the only original idea in his jig! Yet I never thought to be such a jerk that I would go on his site and call him a thief! If you have a problem with someone improving on another design, than you have a problem with ALL WOODWORKING JIGS! I didn't invent the box joint jig, I made my own version. Did I "Steal" the idea of using a dado set for a box joint jig? HOLY CRAP! I built a crosscut sled once, I'd better call everybody who ever makes one from now on a THIEF! :) You called me a thief WAY before the jig was even out, you clearly have an agenda. Maybe you should email the Russian guy and call him out since all those ideas I listed above were "stolen", as you seem to see it, from others too!
@Back2Wood10 жыл бұрын
Stumpy Nubs Damn right, pal! Woodworking (Just as every other building-segment) is in some way copy and paste. Is the LED a ripoff from the lightbulb, because it makes light? Think about it, this is a process called KVP in germany, that means continous improvement process (Kontinuierlicher Verbesserungs Prozess). You will get over it, Joe. Relax.
@mtabernig10 жыл бұрын
Well, no it is not that complicated, however, the plans are somewhat confusing because jumps all over the place. All the information, however, is there and needs to be extracted. I build it. The drawer sliders were hard to get and I had to import them from China. I could had elected to use the 1/2 inch thick we use every day but it would had forced to make the entire machine larger. Whichever version his, Stumpy or mine it is a step forward for the common woodworker to be able to have a tool that other ways would be unreachable. Good job you all. P/D By using straight bits with a 1/4 inch shank it is possible to use up to 5/8" or 14 mm. Please take a look at my video were I am using a strait 1/2" bit.
@StumpyNubs10 жыл бұрын
mtabernig - You built the Russian version, not mine. I saw yours, looked good. My plans are very clear and include step by step photos. And I solved the drawer slide problem with ball bearing drawer slides that are easy to find.

The reason I stopped using a biscuit jointer was the mess it created. You can use a domino and there is no dust. Not a speck. Their sanders suck up all the dust. If I live longer by not breathing in that dust then its money well spent. Also they really hold their value. I sold my ETS as I did not need that model anymore two years later for 30 dollars less than I paid for it. I took a bath on my dewalt contractor table saw selling it a year after I bought it so I could get the Bosch. Which I love by the way. Not the spitting dust at me part though.

You could always buy a ½" shank bit and make a wooden adapter, Stumpy stylee.

People can be funny about their possessions whether it's tools or cars or grills whatever. The sediment still applies. That was so funny. Now these new fangled tools are pretty amazing but it there really an advantage to a biscuit, domino, dowel or using a home made mortise and tendon? I used to cut a mortise in two pieces of wood and cut loose tendons many years ago for jointing boards that would have high stresses, it would seem to be similar to this domino idea. Been about 30 years but I am getting back in the game and all these electric tools are fascinating to me.
