Clean Jones was my Mickey Mantle. Your baseball hero when you’re twelve years old and in love with the game.

Great to see Cleon again, his memories about about how Gil brought a team together, got the most out of his players and helped them develop into the best they could be was inspiring. I like the part about the father figure, we need more of that from managers today not being a player's best buddy.

I was 11 years old in '69. To this day it's still my favorite sports memory.

I did not know until fairly recently that Hodges was an excellent 1st baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers and won three Golden Glove awards at that position. Looks like Kranepool had the right teacher in '62!

You better believe it! I saw many games at Ebbets Field with Gil at first and he was great defensively and not too shabby offensively as well (370 HRs, .279 lifetime BA and 1274 RBIs)

Gil Hodges will forever be remembered as the manager of the “Amazing Mets”, and for good reason. But what I feel is even more telling of the man is the way he handled his 0-21 batting performance in the 1952 World Series. He was crestfallen about it but he didn’t duck any interviews and handled it exceptionally well. That’s why three years later, when he drove in both runs in the Dodgers 2-0 Game 7 victory over the Yanks, fans were so happy for him. He was a HOF man well before his induction.

The biggest mistake that the Hall of Fame selection committee ever made was to deny Big Gil Hodges entry to their organization. The well oiled Brooklyn Dodger fan promotion machine went into administrative action. It took many years and too many overlooked selections. But today MSgt. Gilbert Hodges , USMC is a famous member of the Hall Of Fame.

I wish they had Jane Jarvis playing "Meet The Mets" in the background and more of the players were still around. Thanks for the video.

My understanding is Ted Williams is responsible for Hodges not getting in sooner.

The fact that it took decades for Gil Hodges and Buck O'Neill to be enshrined and deserving players (such as Ken Boyer and Kenny Lofton) are still not there, all while hit-only "players" like Baines, Martinez and Ortiz (a proven 'roider) are elected, only shows what a joke the HOF has become. It would be hard to be a legitimate member and have to sit on the same stage with those incomplete players.

I will say this to the day I die, the rotunda in Citi Field should have been named after Gil, not Jackie. This is n😮ot to disrespect Jackie, but what Gil meant to the Mets would have been fitting.

Chicago had Leo Durocher and... he changed the Chicago Cubs from losers to winners in his 2nd year 1967 , but something or the team wasnt deep. And lost their pennant to Gil and the Mets. Shame that 69 wasnt their year , they were more deserving and their fans too. The Mets might have been losing for 10 yrs , but the Cubs for 20. Ernie Banks and Ron Santo cried

I am a Cub fan from that era (and even before) and I hated the Mets for so many years after 1969. But recently I bought Ron Swoboda's book to get a different perspective of that season. Now I have changed my mind about them. They won for sure because of Mr. Hodges' managing them so masterfully, while Leo Durocher mismanaged the Cubs into the ground. I congratulate the Mets.

Gil Hodges should have been in a long time ago . He is more deserving to be in the HOF than a lot of members. Now time get Joe Jackson and Pete Rose in with all their faults. Ruth, Cobb, Mantle and dozens of others were not someone you would want your daughter to bring home for dinner. If we can have Nancy in Congress, we can have Joe and Pete in the Hall
