The point about the coaching is legit, it's pretty annoying. There's a lot in GI BJJ that you're doing that your opponent isn't going to notice during the fight, and you're counting on them not noticing. When their coach suddenly yells "he's feeding your lapel kick your leg back!" Bruh, train your boy before the fight not during.

I agree for sports like this. Personally I like how boxing does the coaching thing - between rounds. Yes coach can try to yell something during fight but about 99% of the time the boxer either doesn't hear it or isn't listening (or isn't able to process the information). Both because its fast paced intense fighting but also because crowd is often quite loud (even when they aren't cheering there is this constant ambience). And even the coaching between rounds might not work. Escpially on later rounds when boxer is getting tired (or at least controlling their stamina by controlling their breathing - especially newer boxers need to focus on their breathing techniques so much it is gonna be hard to listen actively). So it becomes one of those minigames where boxer and coach need to balance between keeping it simple vs where to put your focus on: do you maintain stamina by breathing, do you listen to coach and focus on tactics or do something else? Some coaches that don't know their boxer well enough might try and give too much information and give tips on which techniques to use or mention clear weaknesses opponent had - but if the boxer is tired, new, lacks chemistry between coach or for some other reason isn't listening then the coaching between rounds is near worthless (other than maybe boxer gets the vibe that coach is there for them and thus giving bit of motivation or feel of safety.. etc psychological effects that seem to play much bigger role on boxing than many admit). Would like to coaches step aside in martial arts tournaments and match events similar way as they do in boxing.

He's right about the coach commentary. More than a few times their coach will give them exactly the right advice to shut down what you're attempting. Likewise, your coach will be telling you what to watch out for. Sometimes it's just a yelling match of "pass, pass, pass" or "up, up, up" or "go, go, go", but most of the time it's just stuff like "work the arm", reminders of the time and/or points margin. Most irritatingly though, you'll have your own plan, and then your own coach will see it's available and start saying that out loud, making your opponent immediately shift weight/retract that limb, completely nullifying the last 10-30 sec of sneaky manipulation and/or misdirection. Win some, lose some - well maybe lose more for me, but still ... learning opportunities.
@dustintaylor86738 күн бұрын
The coach giving away your plan is so true. I was at a BJJ competition and had side control on the guy. Putting the squish on him. His coach yells out "You know what to do as soon as he passes that arm over!". Me to myself: "Okay, don't ever, under any circumstance, pass my arm over".

100% agree about the solo fighting idea. I feel like the time for getting your coach to tell you how to fight is at the gym. But when you're actually testing in a match, just let the fighters fight. I've actually considered quitting a gym just so I could not have to worry about someone calling a fight for me. I've had friends get coached for a match and their coach is way out of touch with their style. Then they feel conflicted because they know if they listen to their coach, it is out of their comfort zone and they might fuck it up. But if they just go their own way and ignore the coach, then they will have to deal with the coach getting pissy with them afterwards. My buddy won gold at an adcc like this. Ignored his coach and afterwards his coach was annoyed with him. But he won the matches. It's like thstf for me too. I'm very unconventional in my style because I'm shaped like a refrigerator with big delts. I don't imanari roll. I don't waste energy. I play strategic and tend to give away points because I only care about submissions. I let people pass my guard and go right to mount. Then I trap them by waiting until they commit their hands and lose their chance to post and roll straight into a triangle. Then I break their triangle open and slide past their legs into top side control. Then they have a 115kg problem to solve. I know it sounds insane, but I haven't tapped to a triangle in two years. And I've passed guard on black belts like this multiple times. It doesn't work on lanky guys. But no coach in the world is going to have my corner and say "OK now let him pass your guard and get into top S mount... Bait him with that triangle... Give him the triangle quickly, you're going to need the time".... Hahaha
