Great song! Great lyrics! U2 was sooooo good in the eighties. He references Dr King’s assassination in Memphis on April 4, 1968. ❤❤❤🙏🙏

The song references Martin Luther King. U2 are also Irish. I like to think it was also a nod to the Choctaw Tribe who donated to the Irish when they were suffering famine. It was a beautiful gesture of love.

It is a song inspired by MLK but also about people who died in the pursuit of peace and equality including Jesus in the line "one man betrayed with a kiss"

Quick question, Im a big U2 fan since the 80s and plan to visit Dublin this November, I want to travel to some some sights were they filmed this video (opening scene with Edge) and to docks on Hanover Quay st where they filmed Gloria, are the locals ok with me taking photos with my family in those areas ? Also is there a schedule when the raise the Tom Clark bridge for boat traffic, thanks man appreciate the feedback.
@jmo8934Ай бұрын
You can take photos no problem. Not sure on the opening time of the bridge but I do know that a new bridge (pedestrian/cyclist) is being planned to be constructed next to it in the next few years.

Never been a huge U2 fan, but I have to say they are one of the coolest bands around to see live, and I will absolutely do so given the chance. Got some tickets to see them when my boss couldn't go to a show he bought 2 tickets for the PopMart tour in 97. It was raining lightly, and Jacksonville being an extremely fickly city, just didn't show up. About 19.2k people in a 70k seat stadium. First thing Bono did after greeting us was say "well this won't do..." And told everybody to move up, insisting security allow it...and waiting 20 or so minutes until we all got up and moved to the front of the stadium. We went from the 50 yard line nose bleed seats, to eye level right across from the corner of the stage. Face value of the tickets was $20 each. Best money for a concert I ever spent. They, unlike most bands facing a mostly empty stadium, they proceeded to play 2 1/2 hours and come out for 2 encores. They brought fans on stage. They bantered with the crowd. You'd never have known that it was such a disappointing turn out. They gave 100% as if the place was bursting capacity. During the second encore they came out in this huge disco ball that dropped them off on the small stage on the apron into the crowd (we were all watching this huge disco ball and didn't notice them setting up a 2nd drum kit and instruments). They all came out wearing Jaguars Jerseys with wearing the number U2 with their names on them. It was an amazing show. 2 lucky fans have Bono's and Edge's. The April 4, and the whole song, is about Martin Luther King. It's very powerful...even more so live.

If you want to really get a feel for U2 back in the day, when they were at their peak, check out the documentary "Rattle and Hum". It's a very well done documentary and has some incredible performances from them at the time. At that time, some people might have been annoyed by them, because they were very serious and sincere and heart on the sleeve, in the middle of the 80s which was the decade of irony, ennui and eye shadow. But that's what made the music so good and the performances so intense.

I always thought the kids in the video represented the necessity for all of us to learn important history, especially around social justice. MLK was, and remains a huge center for this. Not only for the US, but the world. Just another interesting little story - the lyrics state that MLK was shot early morning. It was actually early evening.
@robertfindley921Ай бұрын
Great song with a great message. I wouldn't consider it "catchy", more thought provoking. You're not knowing is a testament to how bad and biased history is in the US. I grew up in Alabama where mention of MLK would get you harassed. Nathan Bedford Forrest is revered instead.

Hi beautiful Maddy! I was so young at the time that those two first or so albums from U2 and the whole band was to me unknown until one of my school mates gave this album to copy, but in this album namely this song hit me hard. Later on I was told that this band was a sort of protest band but with a good will. But even before I knew that this was about Martin Luther King, I loved it.

Two biggest lyrical allusions are to Jesus being betrayed by Judas (one man betrayed with a kiss) and Martin Luther King's assassination (although Bono gets the time wrong--MLK was killed in the early evening, on his way to dinner), but both did it all "in the name of love."

I remember seeing U2 at the Bracknell Leisure Centre, UK in 1981 or 1982. The building was similar to a swimming pool acoustics - with the Edge's wobbly guitar the sound was awful. But hey, they were going through the on the road learning. At the time, I didn't think they would amount to anything, so much for my opinion.
@Asher8328Ай бұрын
"How come the ship says Dublin - Liverpool" etc when he says Memphis?" I think it's a little too much to expect the video to be 100% in sync with the meaning of the song. Most bands are not heavily involved with their videos, they just hire people to add some visuals to it that look kinda cool and help sell the song.

@@MaddyReactions Don't expect any connection between the song's meaning and the video's location. U2 recorded in Windmill Lane studios in Dublin which is maybe 15mins walk from the Eastlink bridge that you referenced from the video. Eastlink is kinda what it suggests ... a toll bridge over the River Liffey at the very east of Dublin, at the sea ... a bridge that links the north and south of the city. Rock videos don't mean anything, beyond promoting the band and serving as a resume for directors. Of course, these days anyone with an iPhone is a "director", so the rock video is an outdated artform. Anyway, I've never quite understood the song, despite liking it. Can't you tell by just listening to the lyrics what the song is about? I mean, seriously! "One man betrayed with a kiss" doesn't ring a bell? April 4 shots in Memphis either? Man, we are doomed as a country! Ignorance has overtaken the world! The fact that you can't tell that the song is about historical figures, men that sacrificed their own life in the name of humanity, peace and love, is just perplexing to me, but even worse, it's just sad! The only man in history to be betrayed with a kiss is Jesus Christ himself! This is just a sad state we are in!
