He is referencing martyrs like MLK and Jesus. People who were killed because they led with love, fought without violence, and died in pursuit of equality. The one big mistake was saying King died in the "early morning, April 4". He actually was shot in the early evening and Bono does sing it correctly live in concert

I often wondered if the discrepancy in the lyrics was from when the news first broke/was announced in the UK versus when it occurred where it happened in the USA because of the time zone difference.

"One man betrayed with a kiss" Jesus.It's about Martin Luther King
@tonycasey3183
@tonycasey3183 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it's a tribute to MLK but it's a song about non-violent resistance according to the band. In the first verse it talks about the different types of leaders we have. Then a man dies on a barbed wire fence - an allusion to the first world war, to which "one man he resists" ie the conscientious objectors to that war, many of whom were shot for cowardice. The second world war is referenced in the line about dying on a beach - see the Normandy invasions. Then the Jesus line about Judas's betrayal with a kiss and JCs refusal to resist arrest and execution. Verse three is the MLK verse which takes poetic licence with the time of day the assassination took place, but it works better aesthetically. All these people had pride in their beliefs instead of arrogance. They are very cool lyrics.

This is definitely a song where you should have looked at the lyrics, at the least after the video when you expressed not really understanding what was being said. There's a reason so many requested this song, and it's because it's a powerful song and really what has made U2 to be considered a thoughtful and maybe even somewhat political group. Many do recognize the significance of the date mentioned, MLK's assassination. I guess maybe it could be interpreted as ballad, but it's not a ballad to romantic love but rather the love of those who sacrificed their lives for the good of humankind.

It’s so funny to hear someone say they have never heard bono sing like this, because he has been singing like this for decades on a massive global stage. “Pride” is a Tribute, to the late Martin Luther King Jr. “MLK.” The final verse of “Pride” says, Early morning, April 4 / Shot rings out in the Memphis sky / Free at last, they took your life / They could not take your pride. MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom

The lyrics "Early morning, April four, Shot rings out in the Memphis sky, Free at last, they took your life. They could not take your pride," refers to Martin Luther King's assassination. The entire song is a tribute to martyrs, from Jesus to a soldier on a barbed wire fence during a war, to being washed up on the beach on D-Day, and even being betrayed with a kiss. U2 making Phil feel conflicted. Sounds about right for U2. 😂 They are very complex in their song meanings. One of my top 10 favorite bands of all time & believe me I place them in very good company. They even sing my favorite song of all time. You either love them or are indifferent to their music. I guess you go to the video everyone loves "Where The Streets Have No Name". They film in a "less than desirable" part of town on purpose as there are certain parts of the world where streets dont even have names. Do the people there even matter? But like a lot of U2 songs its a metaphor. Its by far one of their most complex songs musically (which The Edge wrote) and lyrically which Bono wrote. All that aside, its just straight fire. By the end of the song, you'll be singing along.

I never thought he was screaming. I have loved this band in every era. His voice did soften in the 90's. That doesn't mean he couldn't use that power when he wanted and I never meant to suggest that it did, but he had far more control over the softer tones as he aged. He even said himself that something started to happen to his voice that they didn't expect, but they wanted it. Bono’s vocal range is immense. Their concerts are an experience even now. I’d recommend doing a review of all I want is you into where the streets have no name from their U2 go home concert(slane castle) and bullet the blue sky from their innocence tour in Paris. Actual chills

Saw U2 in Yankee Stadium back in 1992...... Best concert I ever attended. Section roped off next to us reserved for JFK Jr. and his girlfriend. They were really cool passing the doobies our way LoL!!...

On September 29th, U2 will "inaugurate" the structurally unique The Sphere in Las Vegas and will mainly play the songs from Hoffnung Baby 1991 there until the end of the year. PS MLK was sung; maybe you should listen to the whole song first before worrying too much. U2 in the 80's was awesome; this song was the first US hit single, just a musical and lyrical facet of U2. P.S Live Aid 1985 the song package Sunday, Bloody Sunday+Bad👍; you would be amazed!✌

The song came out in 1984 in the Unforgettable Fire Album. You should listen to their earlier albums...just raw.

Comment Number 124. Written by U2. Based on the late Martin Luther King, Jr. You only heard a fraction of what Bono does with his voice! 😃 Suggested U2 videos 📹 1 Two Hearts 2 Beautiful Day.

U2 has such a magical way of making these absolutely euphoric songs with all four members just creating such a soundscape with every single section. Then they have their rockers like Desire and Vertigo where it’s a totally different vibe with each of those yet it’s still U2

Definitely do 'One'. Possibly their most meaningful lyrics. Or for something quite different, 'The Fly'

I must mention that you guys are missing what really makes U2! special when you don't react to live performances. Yes, studio U2 is great. But U2 live is even better. The emotion, their interaction with the fans, the musicianahip, Bono's voice. It's quite the experience. If you ONE next, I suggest the ZOO TV live in Sydney performance. You will not be disappointed.

many think Bono's best vocal performance is his guesting with the band Clannad on their song "In A Lifetime"

So the first song you did was from their. 87 album the Joshua Tree, considered their best album, arguably (Im and Achtung Baby guy). This song is from their 4th album that came out in 84. I guess you should work backwards and do a song from their third album next. I recommend Sunday Bloody Sunday, there's no official video for the album version, but the live video from Red Rocks in Colorado is what tons of people saw on MTV that got them in to U2.
