Love this! The Partridge Family was, indeed, a TV show. It was about a widowed mother of five kids who all become a successful singing group. When the show premiered in 1970, the plan was to have the songs performed by studio musicians with some vocals by Shirley Jones, who played the mother and was a successful musical star. But then it was discovered that David Cassidy, who played the oldest son, Keith, could sing. So David joined the studio musicians (and sometimes Shirley) and recorded the songs as The Partridge Family. So when you're listening to Partridge Family songs, it's really David Cassidy and the studio group. For the series, the other actors pretended to play instruments and mouthed the songs as if they were singing. The show was very successful and David Cassidy went on to become the biggest teen heartthrob in history. And the show produced a lot of very successful songs. "I Think I Love You" was probably their biggest hit. And the instrument you were wondering about is a harpsichord.

The instrument you are wondering about is the Harpsichord and it's sound is probably why you thought of the Addams Family theme. This song spent 3 weeks at number one on Billboards hot 100 and outperformed the Beatle's "Let it Be". I grew up watching this show and knew that Shirley Jones did a lot of Musicals most notably "The Music Man" as Marion the Librarian. David Cassidy was Shirley's stepson from her marriage to Jack Cassidy, another well known actor. He went on to have a successful solo career. It was a made for television family singing group patterned after the Cowsills. It may have been a fictitious band, but there are two major singers in the group, Shirley Jones, who was a famous singer/actress that appeared in many famous musical movies, and David Cassidy, her stepson, the teenage heartthrob at the time who had many hits on his own. The Partridge Family was a TV series which ran from 1970-1974. The series was about a singing family consisting of five siblings and their mother. Few people know that the idea was based on a real life singing family named The Cowsills. The Cowsills consisted of six siblings and their mother who sang and unlike the Partridge Family, actually played their own instruments. They were quite popular then and appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and many other variety shows of the late 1960's. The Cowsills turned down the offer to appear as the TV family which became The Partridge Family series because the producers wanted to replace the mother's part with a known actress/singer Shirley Jones. Shirley Jones played the mother while her real life stepson David Cassidy played her eldest son who sang lead vocals. As far as The Cowsills, they had a few big hits in the 1960's. " The Rain, the Park & Other Things" (1967) is probably my favorite. Close second for me would be "Hair" (1969) which was used in the rock musical "Hair" a story of a tribe of long haired hippies living a Bohemian lifestyle fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. If you ever get a chance, check out the Cowsills life story. Very sad and tragic. There's a great clip of The Cowsills on The Ed Sullivan Show singing a medley of songs to introduce the family members. Check it out: "The Cowsills- A Cowsills Medley 1967"

Such as playing discordant notes or chords off of each other, or playing along a darker more ominous soundtrack. It's that contrast of a latent happy sounding instrument, played darkly that makes it creepy. Like anything. The reasons why children in horror films or clowns tend to really creep people out.

Good songs to give a listen to. I think that David Cassidy and Shirley Jones were the main two singers from the show on the Partridge Family albums, all the rest were studio musicians and session singers. Actress and singer Shirley Jones was actually David Cassidy’s real life stepmom from the time he was around 6 years old. They really became close when they did the show together. Shirley Jones is a brilliantly talented singer and actress, Broadway star, who was married to David’s father, the actor Jack Cassidy, wonderful actor. They had three sons together, Shaun, Patrick and Ryan. All three are actors, Shaun being the one with probably the most successful singing career. He was also quite the heartthrob in his day, too. You can still catch this show on Antenna TV, I think. It’s a fun show. The music is truly good, even though David Cassidy would much rather have done harder, darker music and became so at odds with his squeaky clean, boy-next-door character of Keith Partridge. He was always a rocker at heart. He was vastly underrated and under appreciated.

The Partridge Family is loosely based on a 60s family singing group called The Cowsills (their last name). The TV show was about a single mom and her 5 kids who traveled around in a colorful converted school bus and sang gigs. It was wholesome, kinda hokey family-friendly entertainment. I watched it a lot when I was a kid, and my aunt, like so many other young girls at that time, was absolutely smitten by David Cassidy. Actually, though, I must admit that I still like their music today, it's a guilty pleasure. lol! While I kinda like this song (and I think it's their biggest hit), it's not my personal favorite. I prefer other songs like "Echo Valley 2-6809", "I'll Meet You Halfway," "Only a Moment Ago," and "Morning Rider on the Road." The twangy sound you heard is from an instrument called a harpsichord. It looks like a small piano but uses a plectrum to vibrate the strings by plucking them when you press a key versus using a hammer to vibrate the strings like in a piano. That creates the characteristic twangy sound. They're a very old instrument (Mozart even played one) but not a sound you hear much in music these days other than in old horror music, like the Addams Family that Amber mentioned. Cool pick, guys!

@@KetoKassy No, as I mentioned it was a TV show about a fictional musical family. Although most of the TV cast didn't participate in the real music (and it's comical to watch some of them pretend to play), David Cassidy and Shirley Jones did sing actual vocals. (And Cassidy had a great voice.) But the real musicians were "behind the scenes" shall we say. David Cassidy did solo tours singing hits from the show, though.

I agree with the other commenters on their song suggestions. They had many great songs, in fact I can't think of one that I didn't like. But I haven't seen my favorite song of theirs mentioned which is "One Night Stand". It was written by Wes Ferrell and Paul Anka who was a great singer from the sixties. I also recommend songs from David's solo album Cherish such as "Being Together", "We Could Never Be Friends ('Cause We've Been Lovers Too Long)", "Where Is The Morning" and my favorite "I Am A Clown".

My very first record, at age three, was Melanie, Brand New Key, and we were watching The Partridge Family on TV. The Partridge Family was a sitcom that ran for 4 seasons (1970-1974) on ABC. It was about a family embarking on a music career. The cast included Shirley Jones as the widowed mother of the clan with her children Keith played by David Cassidy (Shirley's actual stepson), Susan Dey as Laurie (later acted on L.A. Law), Danny Bonaduce as Danny, Suzanne Crough as Tracy, Jeremy Gelbwaks, as Chris (1970-1971), and Brian Forster who replaced Jeremy as Chris (1971-1974). Their manager, Reuben was played by Dave Madden. Shirley and David were the only members of the cast who actually sang in the group because they were the only ones who COULD sing well. The offscreen singing members were John Bahler, Tim Bahler, Jackie Ward and Ron Hicklin.

The songs were written and recorded by studio musicians and they would add David Cassidy (Keith Partridge) and Shirley Jones (the mother Shirley) voices on the tracks since they were both really talented singers. Fun fact: David and Shirley were really related. Stepmother and stepson. Shirley Jones was in the Broadway musical Oklahoma and reprised the role for the movie. She was amazing

The Partridge Family was on TV right after the Brady Bunch on Friday nights, and some say it was the success of the Partridges that inspired the producer of the Bradys to have the Brady Kids form their own musical group on their show (and like the Partridges, they put out several albums as well). Shirley Partridge was a widow trying to support her five kids who had started their own band to try to help pay the bills. Shirley ends up helping make a demo tape of this song, and son Danny plays it for Reuben Kincaid who becomes their manager. Shirley buys an old school bus, the kids repaint it in a wild, multicolor stained glass pattern with a sign on the back that says "Nervous Mother Driving" and that becomes the band's transportation. That distinctive instrument you heard was a harpsichord which was a keyboard instrument much like a piano, but when the keys hit the strings inside, they produced more of a tinny, almost metallic sound. The instrument was used much more frequently in the 1700s. If you watch movies set in that time, you may hear the instrument in scenes where they are dancing to a minuet.

This was the very first 45rpm single I ever owned. My aunt gave it to me, which started me on my musical journey that has lasted me throughout my 55 years (so far) on this Earth. At one time, I owned nearly one thousand 45s, hundreds of albums and cassettes, then moved on to CDs, and I've never gotten into streaming, because I prefer to actually own my music. As it stands now, digitally, I own 4-5 thousand individual songs, close to ten thousand "albums" complete, over 400 music videos.... and my library grows with each passing week. Music is something I've always been into, and I spent a good portion of my Jr. High and High School years in chorus. I treasure those memories! I'm not knocking anyone who enjoys the streaming services, but I prefer to own the music I listen to. I have playlists that can run for days without repeating the same song twice. Where music is concerned, we've never lived in a greater era in human history. We can enjoy classical music that's hundreds of years old, all the way up to music that was written earlier this year. You literally can't find "nothing worth hearing". There's something out there that will suit your style, no matter how bizarre it may be (believe me, MY taste in music is bizarre!).
