It is a wall that he eventually gets mentally imprisoned behind with every brick of the wall. Mother, due to overprotective nature provides another brick in the wall. The whole album is a story/concept of his journey from childhood to love to betrayal to fame and finally to insanity.

Mother is actually a really sad song, it’s about an overbearing mum Molly coddling her son by not letting him be a boy and do the things he wants to. This is because she lost her husband in the war and is terrified of losing her son. It's all done through love, but has a negative effect on him creating bricks in his wall of isolation. That's why he says at the end, "Mother did it need to be so high". Also, when a song can affect you so greatly it's powerful, there's nothing wrong with exposing yourself to those feelings and especially appreciating your Mom.

I believe, Roger Waters put multiple meanings to this line. It could mean at the same time, "did the wall need to be so high?", "why did I grow up?", and "did it need to be junked up?"

Well, you have to remember that Pink never, ever, ever takes responsibility for himself. He always lays it on Them, They. Never I. So with this song, so with the album. His father, mother, wife, etc... This song he blames his mother for helping build the wall because she was protective. While it might be that his mother actually did overprotect to some degree, none of the things he mentions are necessarily bad things (Mother will find out where you've been, etc). Even the Mother I will put all my fears into you, is something every parent should probably do to some degree. I mean, unless you think a child should touch the fire to learn it is dangerous instead of telling them it is dangerous. Many say the song is about a bad mother. When it is coming from Pink, you should take the lesson with some amount of skepticism.
@ianfortier6796
@ianfortier6796 4 ай бұрын
@stanleymyrick4068 You hit it right on the head. I constantly see commentary about how the mother character was a detriment and a negative aspect of Pink's life, but you're absolutely right that it was done out of love and a fear of losing her son. I also am glad to see someone else point out that Pink never takes responsibility for anything, and that it's always everyone else at fault. Maybe in that sense, Roger truly is Pink.

One reason why its so different from any of their songs you've heard is that it has Rodger Waters on vocals, who left the band in 1985. I'd recommend reacting to Echoes live at Pompeii to see the 4 primary members after Syd Barrett's tragic departure from the band.

Following the trend of the band's three previous studio albums, The Wall is a concept album, dealing with themes of abandonment and personal isolation. It was initially conceived during the In the Flesh tour in 1977, when bassist and lyricist Roger Waters' frustration with his audience became so acute that he imagined himself building a wall between the stage and the audience. The Wall is a rock opera centered on Pink, a fictional character based on Waters. Pink's life experiences begin with the loss of her father during World War II, and continue with ridicule and abuse from her teachers, her overprotective mother, and finally the end of her marriage. All of this contributes to a self-imposed isolation from society, represented by a metaphorical wall. It is necessary to listen to the entire album to internalize and understand the story. Hug- ✌

Hi Stacey, I first started my love of Pink Floyd when I was 14, I turn 50 in a couple of months, no other band can compare... "Have a cigar" on the wish you were here album is a favourite of mine. And yes it's "Balls" "momma why does "it" have to be so high" My simple interpretation is "It" being the psychological barrier (The Wall) that a single mother can instill in their kids which can be crippling especially in young men, which is an interesting judging by the present societal Issues single parenthood can create.

To get the whole picture of 'The Wall' you first need listen to the whole record, then watch the concert movie from Roger Waters 2011 and 2014 tour and finally the movie they released in the beginning of the 80s. The movie by director Alan Parkerwill provide you with all the context you need to understand the whole concept behind 'The Wall'. The tour had an unbelievable visual concept. During the first half of the concert they built brick by brick the wall until the whole band is hidden behind it. The whole time the wall is used as a monimantal screen to show pictures, movies and best of all unbeleivable animations by Gerald Scarfe. in the second half of the concert the band remains and plays most of the time behind it. From time to time Roger or the 'surrogate' band appeared in front of it until the whole wall will be torn down after the trial 'Pink' (Roger Waters) is holding against himself.

I was lucky enough to go Pink Floyd's "The Wall" concert when I was a senior in high school, about 1980. It was released as a double album set, and part of the incredible stage show was that during the first part of show (sides 1 & 2) of the album, roadies were actually building a (cardboard) wall and at the end of side 2, the entire stage was obscured. That wall was then used to show animation for sides 3 & 4, though members of Pink Floyd would appear in front of the wall, (or above the wall, and as I recall, even a door opened in the wall to show David playing guitar, but the show was mostly Roger Waters (lyricist and bass player) on stage, in front of the wall. At the time, it was the most expensive concert tour in history, and it only played 2 cities in the US, LA for 7 shows, and Long Island, NY for 5 shows. There were also huge "marionettes" performing on stage as characters from the music as well, which were really wild. It was one of the most amazing concert experiences I have ever had.

".. of course mothers gonna help build the wall" .. that is also the answer on what is "so high". And the wall is the inner wall that Pink (the main antagonist, or in reality mostly Roger Waters himself) built up agains the whole world outside. " .. Mother puts all of her fears into you .. " that is maybe the other really important line of the song, that also show its in now way "light" but rather a really dark song. In the end mother has rather made an emotional cripple out of him.

Short and sweet solo, David played a longer version with a second part on tour. The last line hits hard, Pink decided to build the wall and to look after him Mother of course helped her little boy, but once complete Pink looked up and saw how high it was and seemed to have second thoughts. Reminds me of Larkin's famous line, "They fuck you up your mum and dad."

Pink Floyd's albums all have a theme and the songs within tell the stories of that theme. The Wall is about the wall we all build to protect who we all are, our inner psyche, hidden fears, aspirations, loves, our emotions that are formed from our interactions with people and life, it is a wall, a facade, a barrier, our strength, our being, our universe - yes, that is why Pink Floyd speaks to us all.

A lot of people first time listen don’t understand the last line but look at the name of the album and you’ll understand what they’re referring to when he says does it need to be so high! We’re talking about the wall that some people build around themselves through the years for all different reasons whether it’s their mother Etc.

Referring to ‘the wall’- why did she need to contribute to its conception as much as she did? Through all her actions and influence mentioned in the song, she built upon Pink’s wall by being as patronising, overprotective and dominant as she was. In this line, he’s asking her- did she really need to be this way? Did she really have to be one of the primary factors of his wall?
@stanleymyrick4068
@stanleymyrick4068 4 ай бұрын
Pink never took responsibility for what he done and became, always blaming others. When it is coming from Pink, you should take the lesson with some amount of skepticism because it is ALWAYS some other persons doing and fault with Pink.

@@stanleymyrick4068The beauty of music and lyrics is the fact that you can interpet them diffrently. For me, ”mother” isn’t his mother, it’s the reign.

@@swedishgooner6339 What reign? Of course you can interpret anything however you want. Just look at my wife or daughter and they interpret things vastly different than I. But you are the first I've heard ascribe mother to anything other than his actual mother. I certainly haven't and I've listened to this album on loop. Watched the movie untold amount of times. Listen to it to this day, and I'm over 50. But it's your music too, so listen to it your way and no harm no foul, I say.

Stacey I just found your channel yesterday accidentally I do watch reaction videos sometimes but not always, so suddenly youtube recommended me one of your videos and after watching that I watched 4 to 5 videos of yours one by one since yesterday and subscribed your channel Loved your reactions and thoughts and the most interesting part is you react as a listener first not like a musician's reaction who always talks about music theory and all so if someone is not a musician he/she would love your channel to see your thoughts as you bring how you felt, how the song touched you emotionally One humble request, please upload a porcupine tree reaction video on your channel, my favourite band and imo one of the greatest prog rock bands of all time at the same level of pink floyd, rush, genesis etc. Please upload one time, trust me there are a lot of pt fans out there you will get to see on the comment box The songs you can try: trains, blackest eyes, arriving somewhere but not here, anesthetize, the sound of muzak, drown with me, deadwing(the song), the start of something beautiful, the sky moves sideways etc.
