This song is written for their friend and former band mate Syd Barret who’m became mentally ill and eventually was forced to leave the band. Syd passed away in 2006. I went to the Pulse concert in Rotterdam in 1994 and believe me, I cried my eyes out.

When I was in highschool, a friend of mine and I spent all 4 years going to tons of concerts. We went to clubs to watch local bands several times a month, and to the arena & stadiums to see bigger bands maybe 15 times over that span? Anyways.. the two most memorable concerts we attended were Pink Floyd in 94, and we actually ditched our senior prom to see Page & Plant a year later. My only regret was not keeping all my ticket stubs.

(S)hine On (Y)ou Crazy (D)iamond is fully a tribute Syd. His name is even in the title! The WYWH album had themes of him throughout and how much they missed their friend. But this song is about loss, on a universal level. Just missing someone.

What brings tears to my eyes when I listen to Pink Floyd is that many of their songs reacquaint me with my youth and my mortality. I'm a veteran so it's not that I'm afraid of death and God knows I've been around it a lot. Rather they invoke feelings of nostalgia, regret, passion and many other emotions. I contemplate my past choices in life which have allowed me to live it to the fullest of my ability. There is always something that everybody thinks to themselves, I could/should have done this or that differently. Every Pink Floyd song has some ability to make you feel a vast array of emotions. But the real truth of it all is that their music is beautiful and I will miss it. Yet then, I just might bump into them in the afterlife.

Actually, DO NOT do 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' from this Pulse concert. This version misses out one complete guitar solo (out of 3!) and the song suffers for it BIG time in my opinion. The audio version has three distinct guitar solos and each should be experienced the way the band meant them to be. Try that version first before moving onto the Pulse version.

I'm 74 and have loved Pink Floyd for almost all of my life. Yes, I tear up often even if I have heard a song many,many times. They are so deep and full of emotion. I've suggested "Time" a few times now and advised the studio version, but if you want to experience the Pulse live version, you will not be disappointed. There is absolutely no way I can express how sorry I am for your loss. I do however understand why "Wish you were here" would trigger your emotions. Perhaps the best way to cherish the memory is to embed it into a particular song. A song you can listen to and recall all the good things you shared, and those moments that really made a difference for you. This is the song I want to be played when I leave this world. Not because I want people to miss me, but because I'm certain that where ever I end up, is a wonderful place where I'd love for my friends and family to be. So, "WIsh you were here" is me telling them...Not the other way around. :D Again, SO sorry for your loss. I hope you can find your way despite it.

I saw this same show in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap frogged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION… I have seen Pink Floyd 4 times. I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shock both hands at the same time, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well.

I've seen a few of his 84 shows on KZbin. Despite the boom in success that Pink Floyd had after the In The Flesh tour, David Gilmour on his own was still relatively small and intimate. It was like seeing a Jerry Garcia Band show without The Grateful Dead. If I were him, I'd miss those kind of shows where I'd be able to just be myself with the fans.

There are so many great Pink Floyd songs and albums. The 60s and 70s were two of the greatest decades for artists and bands. The best of them just didn't stop.
@stephenreiner1523

This song was written for one of the founders of Pink Floyd, Sidney Barrett. Like Shine on you Crazy Diamond. He was the front man for Pink Floyd until drugs took him down. David didn't want to release this Trac, Roger Waters wrote it.Syd was diagnosed with what was in that time a specific diagnosis in the DMS IIi. However, one could only guess as Syd was fairly well protected. Either way it was the saddest song that Pink Floyd ever wrote. How devastating the issues that people go through. It devastated the band. Hmm, enough said.
@louissamson4609
@louissamson4609 Жыл бұрын
Roger said publicly that, indeed Shine On was about Syd. But, for wish you were here, he never put a name to it. He said it's more about absence of a friend in general that the listener will make his own of it. It fits with the thematic of the album, which is absence.@@stephenreiner1523

Roger wrote the lyrics and David wrote the music. Where did you hear/read that David didn't want to release this track? I've never heard that before and find it odd that might be the case, considering how integral to the album this song is. Thematically, especially.

Pink Floyd put out a lot of good music through the decades. However the four albums they put out in the 70s - Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall - is the pinnacle of their output. Another note, with the Pulse concerts, although great performances, one of the founding members, Roger Waters, had previously left the band and was not in the lineup.

Pink Floyd's bassist Roger Waters left the band in 1985 before the Pulse tour. He was one of the main song writers of the band and wrote all these beautiful lyrics to these songs. I recommend to watch Pink Floyds reunion in Live 8. That's the last time the whole Pink Floyd has ever played. It's so emotional when Roger and David are singing together to Syd Barret who had to left the band because of mental problems. The lurics just fit so well to the concert. "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl."

Dig this. I saw Pink Floyd live on April 12, 1975 at the Cow Palace in Brisbane, California about 15 miles south on highway 101 from San Francisco. Then I saw them 2 years later in 1977 for the Animals tour at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. The 75 concert was the most incredible concert ever. They played alone for 4 hours. They played the entire Dark Side of The Moon Album and the entire Echoes album and several songs from the Wish You Were Here new Album that had not been released yet. It was released in September 1975. I consider myself so lucky to have grown up in this era. I had just turned 18 in April 75 when I attended this show with about 10 of my closets friends. Will never forget that show.

... I agree with everyone previous....but my favorite part is your kitty saying hello... :) I had 2 kitty sisters, 22 and 23 years... and a calico from a bar parking lot in Las Vegas for 13 years. The calico... was taken care of by the barmaids... for the most part... but I saw one "AHOLE" kick at her one night... I grabbed him by the throat threw him against the wall... "IF I EVER SEE YOU MISTREET AN ANIMAL IN ANY WAY AGAIN I WILL... BLAHBLAH"... Never saw HIM at the bar again (I'm 6'2" 225 btw, he was about 5'8" and 150), but I made up MY mind, "KITTY IS COMING HOME WITH ME!!" It took some coaxing, but I finally got the calico in my car and took her home. She was SOOO thankful!!

The wistful helplessness of the last chorus when he adds another 'How I wish' to "How I wish you were here." is just heart wrenching. The words speak for themselves, but the song is set as someone listening to the radio, scrolling through stations until they find a song they like, and then playing along with their own guitar and then singing along for someone they really care about who they miss.

When they played wish u were here she started crying and i asked her what was wrong, she said it made her think of her grandfather who she was real close to. A year later we were real serious and she told me she had some great news, but she wanted to tell me in person. I didnt get off work till 9pm but told her i would come out as soon as i got off. She lived way out in the country and it took 45 min to get to her place. When i got there her father was sitting in backyard by himself, and the sprinklers were going, he was what seemed like a trance, getting soaked. I asked him where susan was, and he said "shes gone". "Gone where?" I asked, "just gone". I thought he was crazy, so i went in the house and her mom and sister were just balling. I asked what was wrong with ronnie, why were they crying, where was susan? They said that earlier susan started having an asthma attack and didnt have an inhaler, they rushed to hospital but it was so far she didnt make it, she passed in truck on way to hospital. I was devastated, i walked outside and ronnie was still in chair, sprinklers still on, staring into space. I turned sprinklers off and said i talked to her a few hours ago, she had news to tell me. He tried to speak 3 or 4 times but stopped. Tears were rolling down his face. He was a mans man, i never saw him cry before or since. He finally spoke and said she told him the good news, she was pregnant with a little boy, and she was gonna name him ronnie, because he never had a son, only daughters. At her funeral they played wish u were here, and even though that was over 30 years ago, i still feel tears well up in my eyes when i hear it.

I assume you've got a list of more Pink Floyd to do but here's just a few more worth checking out: Sorrow, Mother, Coming Back To Life, Time, Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a long one), Breathe, Another Brick in the Wall, Louder Than Words, Echoes (it's like 20 minutes long but worth it), Dogs (another long one), The Great Gig In The Sky, Learning To Fly, Money, Hey You, Marooned (instrumental, quite 'spacy'), One Of These Days. The good thing is you've barely scratched the surface of great Floyd songs. You've enjoyed them so far, there's plenty more where that came from.

Really disagree. Both versions are breath taking and the two female vocalists are superb. But the original studio version with the original singer is just perfection.

He crowd is cheering as much for the song as they are for Syd Barrett, their former founding member for whom this song iis about. He mentally never returned from a bad acid trip way back in their early years. Shine on You Crazy Diamond is another song written for/about Syd and his struggles as is parts of the Wall album. I hope your feeling better and your recovery is progressing as it should...❤❤❤❤❤

In college, we would sit around drinking and eventually the guitars would come out. My friend and I were the only ones who knew the words, so we would sing this every time. He died sophomore year. I sat in my dorm room and played this song over and over on my Walkman until the cassette tape snapped. That was 1989. I still think of him whenever I hear this.

Thank you so much for a beautiful reaction. I am so enjoying your Pink Floyd journey. You are at the very beginning of it... It makes me smile to think how powerful, emotional and wondrous your journey will be. It's a journey I embarked upon around 1970. In 54 years I must have heard every Pink Floyd album literally thousands of times, and I still play them and still enjoy them. Pink Floyd have been the soundtrack of my life. I was at the Pulse concert you have been watching. It was the most incredible, wonderful, emotional thing I had ever seen. I pretty much stopped going to concerts after that because I knew I would never see anything better in my life. One song that you should react to from Pulse is "The Great Gig in the Sky". If you've been emotional up to now listening to Pink Floyd, that song will really make you feel emotional like no other. It's one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded by anybody and the performances are absolutely incredible. I would absolutely adore seeing your reaction because I know it will hit you in the same way it never fails to hit me. The very best of luck with the channel and it is so wonderful seeing somebody receptive and eloquent like yourself starting your Pink Floyd journey. There are so many people who have done the same on KZbin and so many of them have ended up in tears like you. Take care. Andy.

To me, the most important line of the lyrics is "Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" That line always makes me think about my life. By the way, you kept saying "the album." The 4-5 songs you have heard have been from 4-5 albums. You dad is right; Pink Floyd created concept albums. But you're going to have to choose which album.

Rick Wright....what an awesome and critical contributor. Not often considered in the same light as Dave Gilmour and Nick Mason. Maybe because he was a salaried component of the band.... I dunno. What I do know is that his sound is so deeply entrenched in Floyd's music. In many ways, it's the back bone of their sound. Here's to Rick🍺

6:06 mark...yes, David Gilmour matched what he was playing on his guitar with his voice, absolutely perfectly in time and tone, the two became one. And Stacey, the realization of what he was doing hit you hard, and you reacted to it strongly with surprise and amazement. They were, are and always will be Pink Floyd, and he will always be the brilliant, talented, amazing David Gilmour. What's not to like? What's not to LOVE? ; )

I'll explain David Gilmour's style. Guitar Magazine back in the mid - late 90s wrote: David Gilmour is The Undisputed Dean Of The Compound Bend and has practically Perfect Note Placement. His solos are not technically difficult Note wise, but to be able to bend and release is difficult to mirror. David Gilmour said, not verbatim as I'll try to explain, that he plays his solos, mainly, as if like an Opera Singer. Play a note and bend it in certain ways and shake it like an Opera Singer. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth said, David Gilmour can take one note and bend it in so many ways where many other guitarists have to use the entire fretboard to do so. Something along those lines. About David Gilmour's mouth movement as he plays is because he is actually singing in his mind and actually moves his mouth muscles as if he were singing it and then relays it to his fingers in order to achieve the sound and or sounds he is wanting to make and or perform. For example, studies have shown that when a person is annunciating a word or words in their mind their trachea and larynx, maybe just larynx, moves as if talking. A great example of David Gilmour singing the notes that he is playing is in the song, (Best Acoustic Song Ever) Wish You Were Here short solos. I was 15 years old when the Pulse Tour was happening and I heard a commercial for it. When I heard the voice of David Gilmour sing, in the advertisement, "Ticking Away The Moments That Make Up A Dull Day...." I thought, WHAT THE HELL? I went out and bought The Dark Side of The Moon Album. I just went straight to the song Time. Then, when I heard that guitar Solo of his in the song Time, I thought.. okay.. time to pick up a guitar and start learning. That Solo is considered a Masterpiece of Composition. Not technically difficult to play, but again... He is and still is The Undisputed Dean Of The Compound Bend with practically Perfect Note Placement. Hence why many people say, "Damn! He can make that Guitar Sing!" All my life, I never understood why the 2nd (last Solo) of Comfortably Numb was never #1 in Best or Greatest Solos of All Time. However, finally a few years ago it became The Greatest or Best Solo of All Time. If you understand Music and Math, that Solo can be played Indefinitely. (If you don't get tired) It goes from B down to E and repeats. David Gilmour in an interview said something along the lines of, "The structure of the music allows me the freedom to just play." To end.. David Gilmour admits that he never was a fast playing Guitarist. Does he really need to be? (rhetorically asking) 🎸 ❤🎉 Stacey, I follow you now because of your reactions to Pink Floyd... ❤ Alice Cooper said something like, "Pink Floyd is Here... While everyone else is over here... " In an interview showing with his hands the separation of... No one is like nor ever will be like Pink Floyd.. 🎉 ❤😊🎉 David Gilmour is my favorite Guitarist and Artist 🎉 Roger Waters said that David Gilmour has a Very Powerful Voice 🎉

Thank you for your great reactions to Pink Floyd. As a teen in the 70’s, we had so much great music at the time that we just took some of it for granted…but never Pink Floyd. Theirs was always special! Seeing today’s younger generation appreciating this music gives us a feeling of relief that this music will continue long after we’re gone! You will always have a chorus of people saying you must react to the entire album to get the full effect. It’s true that each album was based on a specific concept and yes it’s great to listen to it in one session but it’s not essential. You can cherry pick songs and it’s fine. Just look for that particular albums concept and you’ll have context for each song. You will also notice that your subs and views greatly increase when you react to Pink Floyd. We’re loyal fans and love seeing new people discover it. I would much more appreciate seeing your reactions eight different times for Dark Side of the Moon than just once because you did the entire album! Love your idea to listen to them individually first and then do a full album later on. You won’t regret it. Also the song Sorrow is great from the pulse concert!

I am in my 50s. Have been listening to this song for my entire life. Somehow, over all those decades, I have never not found this song to be timely, relevant, and to speak to me about my life. A lost girl, a lost friend, a lost family member as you get older. It has brought me to tears so many times. Stacey may find that she did not bawl her eyes out this time, but we all experience moments of deep loss over the years and this song just keeps sneaking up on you at those times. Like a gift from the universe in your moment of need. I have both jammed and wept to this song. Its really one of the greatest songs ever written.

Stacey, you have a wonderful ability to empathically connect with the emotion of a song. Please allow me to share why this song makes me--- a 60 year old man who grew up in the "men don;t cry" era--- why I cry every time. On the Monday after Thanksgiving in 2005, I dropped by my best friend's house to see if he was ok. The Friday before, his wife left him, took their two kids, and moved in with a guy my friend had known since KINDERGARTEN. I walked in, and he had a .12 gauge under his chin. I spent the next hour and a half trying to talk him out of it. In the end, I failed. Every day of my life I hear his final words. I had told him, Tim, I thought you loved your kids more than this." He stopped crying, looked at me, and said "Rob, I thought I did too." Those were his last words. He was a fanatical Pink Floyd fan, and every time I hear this song, it makes me feel the pain of loss so deeply all over. So I admire your ability to let the deep emotion of the music flow through you. Thank you.
