Bonnie is a badass! She led the legal battle to get older blues singers/musicians paid for their music in terms of royalties. I think she started an organization/foundation for that cause. She is very well respected in the artists' community.

The very first time I heard this song, I was a very happily married mother of three, but it touched me so deeply that I memorized every word and could sing it immediately. This is just one of those songs. Beautiful and haunting. Nothing but love for Bonnie and this song. AND...this song opened me to the rest of her catalog. Respect!

As others have said, Bonnie is a blues guitar legend, who is also the daughter of Broadway legend John Raitt. This is easily one of my favorite ballads of hers, but you should also react to Angel From Montgomery as well. She has recorded it both solo, and with John Prine, and you can't go wrong with either one. She was someone who's career seemed to be over by the mid 80s, having pretty much thrown it away on booze and cocaine. She cleaned up her act, and made a HUGE comeback in 1989, not unlike Tina Turner, with her album Nick Of Time, which won multiple Grammys, and cemented her legacy as one of the greats. This is my favorite song by Bonnie, I used to walk to work everyday, and I learned this bittersweet tune and fell in love with it because it's true. The pianist is Bruce Hornsby (absolutely incredible), and he has some tunes that will blow you two away. Some of Bruce's tunes are Mandolin Rain, The Show Goes On, The Way It Is, Down The Road Tonight, The Old Playground, The River Runs Low, I will Walk With You, The Wild Frontier, and so many others. No doubt Bonnie has given us one of the great voices in pop music.. but her superb guitar playing is why she is counted among the all-time greats. She learned from (and performed with) many of the great early blues guitarists of the mid 60s and early 70s. My favorite is her live performance of "Love Me Like A Man".

I saw her one night at KU in a blizzard. Almost no one showed up. She just called us all down from the cheap seats and let everybody just sit around on floor and the stage. We'd just ask her to play songs and she would. She had just put out an album with lots of horns on it and someone kept asking her to play some of those songs. It was just Bonnie, Freebo, and a drummer. The first couple of times Bonnie just reminded them that she had no horns and couldn't do those songs. After the third request she fumed "Do you know my music or just read the album liners, I got no fucking horns!" It was my most memorable concert.

Finally, Bonnie Raitt. Her roots were the blues. She's one of the best interpreters of other songwriter's songs . One of the best slide guitar players out there. An incredible vocalist. There are so many songs to pick from in her work over the decades. One of my favorites is her cover of Jackson Browne's "My Opening Farewell" and the song "All at Once". Check out her old blues songs like "Love Me Like a Man" and "Give It Up or Let Me Go". John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery". The song "Something To Talk About" is fun. I saw Bonnie for the first time in 1972 or 73' with just her then bass player Freebo playing in a coffeehouse. Seen her many times since. She never disappoints. Some other female artists to check out are Carole King and Laura Nyro.

It’s Bruce Hornsby playing the piano in this song. It’s a great song. I saw Bruce Hornsby in concert back in 2004 and he started playing this song but then Bonnie Raitt herself came out from backstage and sang the song. Of course, the whole audience went wild from the surprise and it was a wonderful performance.

I had the fortune to be at Bonnie's KU concert right after someone had stolen her bottle neck slide the night before in Hayes, Kansas. She was pissed. Then six months later I was at her concert in KC and she had just had her stolen slide returned to her. She was so happy (and pretty drunk) that she played some SERIOUS slide that night.

"I Can't Make You Love Me" is one of the most emotional, out-of-love/breakup songs ever. Bonnie Raitt's singing and Bruce Hornsby's piano playing are perfectly mournful. Other master ballads in this genre are "Un- Break My Heart" by Toni Braxton", "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" by Elton John, "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" by Deborah Cox, "Even Now" by Barry Manilow, "Somebody Like You" by Adele, and "A House Is Not A Home" by Luther Vandross.

Song was written by Mike Reid, who was a star linebacker at Penn State in the late '60s and then for the Cincinnati Bengals and played in two Pro Bowls in 1972-'73. He's in the College Football Hall of Fame. After he retired from pro football he had a pretty good career as a songwriter and country music artist.

Her song, “Nick of Time”, is one of the most moving songs lyrically that I’ve ever heard. It’s perhaps my most favorite song of all time. It came out in 1989. If you listen to it, you must pay special attention to the words. They are so meaningful. It’s a song about aging and being scared of running out of time. My favorite line from the song is, “Life gets mighty precious when there’s less of it to waste”. It is a must hear!

Some Bengals trivia: This song is co-written by former Bengals DT Mike Reid, who has had a long career as a songwriter and musician since his football days. He wrote several hits for Ronnie Millsap, and had a hit of his own in the early 90s called "Walk On Faith"

For Raitt, the song was notoriously difficult to sing, due to its required vocal range, difficult phrasing and breathing, and the emotional content involved. At the televised Grammy Awards of 1992 Raitt performed it in an even more austere setting than on record, with just her and Hornsby highlighted. As she negotiated the final vocal line, she let out a big audible and visible sigh of relief that she had successfully gotten through it. Her live performance of the song was released on the 1994 album Grammy's Greatest Moments Volume III. Raitt has continued to sing the song in all her concert tours: I mean, 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is no picnic. I love that song, so does the audience. So it's almost a sacred moment when you share that, that depth of pain with your audience. Because they get really quiet, and I have to summon ... some other place in order to honor that space. - Raitt, 2002 NPR interview

I used to play this on piano and sing it, and yeah, it's a toughie. The word "make" is awkward that high and held out. It makes me feel better to know it was tough for her, too. 🙂 ... I couldn't possibly do it today, too out of shape.

This is quite the departure from Bonnie's catalog. She is one of the best female blues artist ever. She cut her teeth touring with some of the greats. I think you'll be surprised when you dig into her body of work. A soulful voice and slide guitar chops that set her apart from any other. A suggestion for female Friday, (Susan Tedeschi) if you haven't already . Maybe start with her early stuff like "Hurt So Bad", "Little By Little", "Rock Me Right" or "Just Won't Burn" from her first album. You'll love her and then follow her career with Derick Trucks her husband. I always enjoy your reactions to music that I love as well. Happy trails guys!

You're going to get a ton of suggestions - all good - but if you want the full artistry revealed, go for these two: (1) If you want to bawl your eyes out, you MUST hear the studio version of "Love Has No Pride". It is astonishingly raw and heartbreaking. (2) If you want the blues vixen, go with "Love Me Like A Man". I challenge you not to blush :-) And so many others, Bonnie is worthy of a deep dive like you can't believe: "You've Been In Love Too Long", Guilty", Real Man", Angel From Montgomery", "Been Too Long At The Fair", "Thing Called Love", and on and on.
