It was always headline news when Willy's tour bus would get stopped by the cops on the highway (no pun intended) and he'd get busted for possession. (This was before laws had loosened up over weed) News stations would be filming when Willy was released from the cop shop and Willy always walked out with a big ole grin on his face basically saying, "Til next time, guys."....and there were a lot of next times. lol Take care and be well, guys. Always on My Mind" is a ballad written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James, first released by Gwen McCrae (as "You Were Always on My Mind") in 1972. Brenda Lee also released a version in 1972. The song has been a crossover hit, charting in both the country and western and pop categories. AllMusic lists over 300 recorded releases of the song in versions by dozens of performers.[1] While Lee's version stalled at number 45 on the US country chart in 1972, other performers reached the top 20 in the United States and elsewhere with their own versions: Elvis Presley in 1972; John Wesley Ryles in 1979; Willie Nelson's Grammy Award-winning version in 1982; and Pet Shop Boys in 1987.

One of the things that really sets Willie apart is his phrasing. Listen to his tests, the time that he holds notes for, the changes in pitch. He does all these without upsetting the time signature or the key of a song. I do not know of any other singer who does all those things. Put all that together with his unique voice and you get magic. Something else that is often unnoticed is his range. He makes everything sound so easy and effortless that you don't even realize how wide a range he's covered. I didn't notice it until I was singing along one day and found that I had bottomed out on my range. Willie still sounded like he'd never dropped below a deep tenor, yet unnoticed he'd eased down to bass.

I had the privilege of watching Willie Nelson perform live in concert in 2009, at the Covelli Center in Youngstown, Ohio. It was a short time after his 76th birthday. Willie Nelson hooked up a microphone on the bottom end of his acoustic guitar, and proceeded to give the guitar performance of a lifetime. He played all of his hit songs, and he sang and performed about a half-dozen Blues songs that night, Nelson's electrified acoustic guitar growled like a grizzly bear, and his guitar playing BLEW ME AWAY! I just wish that there was a videotaped performance of Willie Nelson during that tour. It was clearly some of the best performances of his career.

@@maverick2242 he was credited for more than 300 songs the last time I checked... no telling how many more he's written since then. This song alone has hundreds of covers... can't remember how many, but recall it was in the triple digits. The songwriters definitely cashed in on this song. Curious if it's been in The Guinness Book. 🤔

You guys should check out the original with Elvis Presley, just as lovely. Both renditions of the song are wonderful and sad at the same time.

There were a few more artists that recorded it before Elvis. I can't remember the first one, but Brenda Lee was the second to release within the same year as The first. I think there were others between hers and Elvis' version too.

So I missed typed i believe the song was released in 1972 and covered by two different artists Gwen McCrae and then Brenda Lee. Later on Elvis covered it later that same year and the Willie Nelson in what I believe 1982.

@@taerdrop Brenda Lee, Gwen McCrae, and Elvis all recorded it early on, likely before they had heard any of the other versions.

To be honest, I prefer this to Elvis's version. he just puts better emotion into it. You should consider checking out Clint Black's When I Said I do. It is a gorgeous duet with his wife, Lisa Hartman Black. Love to all.
