You've never listened to the "Attila" album, I take it? Let's just say when Allmusic calls it the Worst Album in Rock History and it's pretty hard to dispute… (In Billy's defense, he and Jon Smalls recorded that it the basement of Jon's parents' dry-cleaning store, and the chemical fumes might have been affecting their brains. And it wasn't the album per se that made Billy attempt suicide; that was about his personal life. But still. God, that is AWFUL. "Music" is being charitable, IMO.)

@@leomarshall4059...."A song I personally don't like" doesn't equate to "a bad song". I love NYSOM and Pressure so would strongly disagree with you. There are however quite a few BJ songs that I will skip over when listening to his albums. Doesn't make them bad, just not to my taste.

River of Dreams was really his last regular studio album. When he reached this point in his career he decided he was reaching his motivational limit. He felt that it was a good stopping point and that if he continued the quality might steadily go down. Honestly after that I missed new music from him a lot. His music always spoke to me. I managed to see him a couple of times in concert later on - once with Elton John and once on his own. Another song I would recommend from this album is "Lullabye"

@@clarkgabriel427 In any case this is what he said in his interview with the New Yorker magazine “Some people think it’s because I’m lazy or I’m just being contrary," he said. "But, no, I think it’s just -- I’ve had my say. If I put out an album now, it would probably sell pretty well, because of who I am, but that’s no reason to do it. I’d want it to be good. I’ve seen artists on that treadmill, putting out albums year after year, and the albums get worse and worse, less and less interesting, and it’s, like, 'Maybe you should stop,'"

When River of Dreams came out, somehow I missed the news that he had a new album coming. I was eating lunch in my car and this song came on. The falsetto at the beginning, I thought... wow, that sounds like Billy Joel!' But I've never heard this song and I have ALL his music. It sounded so different from his other work, I was second guessing myself all through the first part. Until the piano started. Then I knew without a doubt!!!

Im a huge fan of Billy Joels piano music in his songs. River of Dreams has a great piano sound. It's my next song to learn on the keys.

Billy played this song at the Grammy Awards and that year Frank Sinatra was I believe given a lifetime award (don't quote gospel on that) and he spoke a bit longer so somebody at CBS decided to cut to a commercial. Gary Shandling was hosted and voiced his displeasure immediately after they came back from commercial. Billy played River of Dreams and at the pause in the song said "valuable advertising time going by valuable advertising time going by dollars dollars dollars ticking ticking ticking ticking " what a wonderfully subtle protest! Love Billy Joel's music.

I recommend Stilleto or The Stranger, from Billy Joel his vocals are amazing (I also recommend you watch the live versions from the 1987 bridge to Russia tour, it has some of his best live performances in that tour)

He performed this song at the Grammy's that year Frank Sinatra received a special award and he went longer than expected and the network cut to commercial while he was still talking and the host Gary Shandling and many of the artists were VERY UPSET! While Billy was performing River of Dreams when he paused for the last time he stopped and said "valuable advertising time going by, valuable advertising time going by, ticking ticking ticking, dollars dollars dollars" he then went back into the song. One of my favorited moments in music. Subtle but got the point across and I am sure backstage people were applauding and busting a gut laughing. I highly recommend any and all songs from the album(I am old school) An Innocent Man. This was the first tour I ever saw Billy Joel live and that show made me want to see him again and I did another 4 or 5 times the last at what is now T-Mobile Park in Seattle. He said it was a lot better than the first place he played in Seattle The Fresh Air Tavern.

Possibly my favorite TV moment was when Billy performed this at the 94 Grammys. He performed just after Frank Sinatra recieved a lifetime achievement award and the producers interrupted his speech and played him off. At the break he took a super long pause looked at his watch and says "valuable advertising time going by" . It was a great FU to the producers and advertisers. It's on youtube and highly recommend watching.

2 of my favorites from my childhood are Uptown Girl and For the Longest Time. They both have a Doo-Wop feel... the mid 80s had a huge throwback to the 50s and I loved every moment of it.

I was lucky enough to see Billy on his last tour and I don’t thing there was a single minute I wasn’t crying. It was so emotional and he was so lovely. He was fighting a cold but sang his heart out anyway and he still sounded amazing. One of the top moments of my life for sure.
