This song was the theme song for the 1977 film "Goodbye Girl". I highly recommend you add this great romantic comedy to your movie reaction list! Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason were perfect for their roles in this movie. Also, Richard Dreyfuss was the actor who played the young marine biologist in "Jaws". He's actually had quite a film career and was wildly popular back in the 70s! Thanks for this reaction! 💙✌

"Goodbye Girl" is a song by David Gates, lead singer of Bread, which was released as a single in December 1977 following the premiere of the hit film of the same name. As the theme song to the film, the song reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the biggest hit of Gates' solo career. It also reached number three on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song is from Gates' third solo album of the same name, released the following year. The story was supposedly based on Dustin Hoffman's life as a struggling actor, reportedly, it was the story of what happened to Hoffman after he became a star. Peace out.

Little background about the lyrics and how it matches the plot of the movie. "The Goodbye Girl" is about a girl who is always getting dumped by men and because of this, once she does fall in love for real, she has a hard time with trust . . . until the last line of the song . . . "forget your past, my Goodbye Girl, because now you're home at last." This is him saying, "don't worry, I'm here to stay." Last line of the song sort of makes me tear up a bit. : )

@@doplinger1 I heard Suite:Clouds/Rain (which I believe is its full title) on the radio one evening as a teenager. Pressed record on the cassette recorder, but didn't hear the artist or song name, and amost missed the second half because I stopped the recording too early. (Was quick to press record again, fortunately.) For 25-30 years that recording was the only way I heard the song, which I like quite a lot. When lyrics pages began to exist on the Internet, I finally managed to figure out what the song was called. I immediately ordered a David Gates CD that included it. So wonderful, and his other songs are fine too, he has a very nice voice. I'd love to see a Clouds/Rain reaction.

David Gates and Bread are one of my all-time favorite groups, they made beautiful love songs. Should check out their song Guitar Man, it's about a musician fading out of the spotlight. oh and by the way, most lead singers that leave the group to become a solo act, the reason why they still sound like the group is that the band is playing behind the singer, at least for a while they are until they get a sound of their own.

A little bit of trivia! If I'm not mistaken, this song was written for the movie The Goodbye Girl, starring Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason, which was a movie based on a Neil Simon play. FUNNY! That should definitely be a movie reaction choice! Marsha Mason was the second wife of Broadway playwright Neil Simon, the most prolific, successful playwright in Broadway history. He wrote for the Sgt. Bilko tv show, and was also was a sketch comedy writer for the tv show Your Show of Shows, starring Sid Ceasar, who was the football coach in the movie Grease, which both of you reacted. Neil Simon worked with Carl Reiner, who created the Dick Van Dyke Show, whose son Rob Reiner, directed A Few Good Men and played Mike Stivic on the 70s tv show All in the Family; he also worked with Woody Allen, who made the film Annie Hall; Larry Gelbart, who developed M*A*S*H for television; and Mel Brooks, who made Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.

Great reaction to a great song, guys. David Gates voice is just a balm for the soul! BTW, it wasn't the rest of the band Creedence that sued John Fogerty for sounding too much like himself. That was Fantasy label owner Saul Zaentz. John responded on his Centerfield album, in one of his lyrics about a pickpocketing pig... 'Zantz can't dance but he'll steal your money. Watch him or he'll rob you blind.' Saul threatened to sue Fogerty and his new label for that one too, so he changed it to Vantz Can't Dance, re-recorded the song and made a new album master, changing the album jacket as well, since it was the title of the song. I still have a first pressing of that 'Centerfield' album with the original title and lyrics.

Definitely check out the movie this song is the theme song of. Written by Neil Simon, directed by Herbert Ross, and starring Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason. A quartet of brilliance right there. I lived in Los Angeles when the Northridge earthquake hit and that's when I met one of my neighbors, an actress named Anita Dangler. She and her husband, Michael Prince, who was also an actor, pulled out a bottle of Amaretto and three glasses and we drank in the hallway to calm our nerves during the aftershocks. Interestingly, she is in "The Goodbye Girl". Such a small world we live in. 😀
