I actually sent the band an email back in 1997 (yes that long ago) asking where the story came from, and got a really cool reply from Gord that they were sitting around in a bar talking about what would have happened in their town if there had been an escape from Kingston Penn...) Wish I still had that email! I wrote a short story based on the song way back then. Love it.

Canada has a population of 39 Million. The night of Tragically Hip’s last concert 11.6 Million, about 30% of us, half the adult population of the entire country, watched live on CBC & in Kingston Ontario the bands home town. Gord Downie’s performance was, courageous, beautiful and as always entertaining. I’ll never forget it. Downie’s lyrics almost always told a story, very often a Canadian one, sometimes in a way you had to work to understand. It was always worth it. RIP to a Canadian Treasure

This was their first hit in the US. Some of us Yanks kept paying attention to this superb band that kept making iconic big hits in Canada where they became more than just a big band. They became the heart of Canadian rock. The lead singer died of brain cancer in 2016. He didn’t stop touring until he had to. Their last concert was broadcast live on CBC and I was privileged as a Yank to view it as being near Canada we got the CBC. He’s still missed. Try Courage.

It was their second big hit overall. Blow at High Dough was the first single off Up to Here and New Orleans is Sinking is the second. Three of the four singles off their debut album became iconic tracks (38 years being the third). Only Boots and Hearts faded away somewhat, although the biggest country music festival in eastern canada is named for that song.

The Hip as we call them here in Canada is iconic, they came to prominence when I was in university, and for most of us Canadians we all saw them live at a some sort of university event. Sadly Gord Downie passed away from brain cancer in 2017 but luck for his fans in Canada he was able to do a tour before he passed.

There’s a great documentary on The Hip called “Long Time Running” aptly named for one of their songs, it follows the band on their last tour which they embarked upon across Canada after Gord’s brain cancer diagnosis, unbelievable the strength it must have taken Gord to do that tour, he really was a man of the people. "The Hip" are one of my top 5 fav bands. saw them live in '91 opening for Eric Johnson at a bar in Harrisburg PA. I bought "Up to Here" and "Road Apples" the next day. I then saw them live 14 more times in the next 20 years. I feel lucky to have seen them in America because I saw them in small venues. In Canada they filled stadiums!

We lost Gord Downey, lead singer / song writer for the Hip a few years ago, he was such a legend! In this song believe the Hip are the first band to refer to God as a woman. It's hard to describe how iconic this band is in Canada. You're gonna get blasted in the comments with song requests but I'll add my list too. Songs with the same 'vibe' as this one: At the Hundredth Meridian, Boots or Hearts, or Little Bones. Some more mellow but amazing options are Wheat Kings (based on the true story of a Canadian teen sentenced to prison for a murder he didn't commit), Long Time Running (one of my personal favourites), or Fiddler's Green. At a performance at Ontario Place Gord changes some of the lyrics. He actually sang "I had my hands in the toilet. My feet back up on the tank"!!! I guess ol' Gordie was bored that night. I have seen the Hip too many times to count. I even watched them 2 nights in a row at the Horseshoe on Queen St in Toronto. The best was at Masonic Temple on Yonge Street. Saw them in 1989 at a college pub. They defiantly were popular with the crazy college crowd back then. I always though that live his vocals were even worse than studio. There is a song with reference to my home town called Born in the Water.

I’m from California, and first heard The Hip in 1989/90. They were unique. It was REAL rock and roll. I was personally not happy with the over produced 80’s sounds popular at the time. They were refreshing, also lyrically they were as Amber mentioned, songs that told stories. Gord Downie is iconic. A true poet. I followed their career through the 90’s and then in 1998 I saw them live at The Fillmore in San Francisco. It was a life changing experience. It was a great place to see them, about 800 Canadians….and a handful from the U.S. These crazy Canucks were ELATED! They knew every lyric. The dancing was intense. The air guitars were a plenty. I became a massive fan after that. I saw them once more at The Fillmore in 2000. That full show is actually on KZbin! I cried when Gord died. I can’t watch their final concert, broadcast live in Canada, without balling my eyes out. I own the Blu-Ray, which seems to be a collectors item now. Songs I would recommend are Blow at High Dough, their first single. It rocks. From that first record I would suggest 38 years old, it’s a fantastic true story. Also from that first LP, Boots or Hearts. It’s a deep tack that shows their diversity. Their follow up LP, Road Apples, has some of my very favorite songs, Twist My Arm is a strait up banger. Cordilia is not a single, but it’s a spectacular song. Lyrically it’s pure poetry. Little Bones has a great video and is a great rock/dance track. Their third record, Fully Completely was an attempt to break into America but it really didn’t happen. It was a big hit in Canada though. It actually was a very Canadian album lyrically. Gord Downie took full lyrical control on that record and never looked back. It has two of my favorite songs, Locked in the Trunk of a Car and Looking for a Olace to Happen. At the Hundredth Meridian shows Gord doing a rock/rap vocal. It’s iconic live. A few other favorites , So Hard Done By…great bass line and awesome lyrics. Springtime in Vienna is a top 5 fav of mine. A song and video that, for me, is a real standout is Poets. Talk about a great RIFF. That video captures Gord’s quirky genius perfectly. Okay rant over. I’m just happy you revisited this wonderful band. Thank you.

Saw them about 7 or 8 times, but nothing like the end of the Up To Here tour when they were playing 4 or 5 off the Road Apples album and Get Back again, Crack My Spine, Just As Well and others.......in a bar no less. Will never forget it. Place was packed and they rocked that place so hard I missed 2 final exams, my graduating year, the next day 😂😂. Totally worth it and would do it again 😆🤘🏼

This is kind of surreal moment. After ALL these years, to see these guys getting some love out of the U.S. is a very strange feeling. They just never got over in the states. It never happened. It's like this band was behind the "iron curtain" as far as our American cousins were concerned. So they just hunkered down and played for us. For YEARS. Out of KINGSTON, Ontario ... halfway between Toronto and Montreal. And yep, this really was the song that put them on the map.These guys are like a window into the soul of Canada. Lots of very Canadian themes through the songs (easily missed if you're not from here), and just regular songs about love, life etc. We have more to offer ... Bands like SLOAN, OUR LADY PEACE, MOIST and more. All three there are 90s stuff from our very own grunge, post grunge (and more) scene. Big names up here in the great white north. Check out "Money City Maniacs" by SLOAN. Good place to start with them. Edit - just remembered BLUE RODEO. Our alt-country tour-de-force!

I'm far from being a true Hip superfan, but I can easily off the top of my head list 30 songs that still get regular play on the local Classic Rock stations, which shows just how much respect they get up here. New Orleans Is Sinking, Little Bones, Courage, and Blow At High Dough are probably the best ones to use as an introduction to the band, but then once you start digging into their real "fan pleasers", the list just goes on and on.

At least a third of Canadians worldwide watched their final concert live. I watched it here in Australia. Due to Gord Downie's condition, it wasn't his best performance, but he put everything into it, and would still have put many to shame. Of course, it was less of a case of "entertain us", than the opportunity to be part of a communal experience saying goodbye to a band that meant a lot to us, and to support and thank Gord.

What a great guitar riff! What a cool chorus! Their final concert was aired on live TV across Canada in August of 2016. 11.7 million people watched it in a country of 36,1 million at the time (32.4% of the population). Gord Downy had brain cancer at that time, the same kind that Neil Peart had, and it affected his memory. So he had about five teleprompters giving him the lyrics while he sang. Watching the show, you wouldn't know he had memory issues or that he was dying. It was a fitting way to say farewell to a beloved Canadian band. Little Bones Courage Poets (so many more)

The Hip never really got much reaction in the US, much like Rush. They were a somewhat eclectic band, known for including many Canadian cultural references in their songs. 50 Mission Cap, At the Hundredth Meridian and So Hard Done By would be good for you to check out. Also, funny that you mentioned Jom Morrison; if you listen to the versions of New Orleans Is Sinking and Highway Girl recorded live at the Roxy, you'll hear Gord go off on a story in the middle of the song and the band just runs with it in a similar way to what Morrison did with the Doors. To help you to understand how much of a cultural icon they were, you only need to know about their last concert. In 2015, Gord Downie was diagnosed with brain cancer. They set up a cross country tour which culminated in the final concert in Aug 2016 in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario which was simulcast live and in its entirety on tv and internet by CBC (our "national" broadcaster) for free. It was shown in bars and in theatres; people held watch parties; businesses closed early so people could watch. From a cultural perspective, the only event that I could compare it to would be the moon landing. And when Gord passed, it was almost a national day of mourning. That's the Tragically Hip that Canadians gush over. They were more than just music.

My fav Tragically Hip song is 'My Music at Work'. I'd recommend the official video. It seems The Hip really understand how important some tunes can be to get some of us through our workday. Still my favourite Hip song after all these years. The Hip have such a variety of tracks from heavy bluesy rock to more folky ballads, but the common thread is the amazing lyrical poetry of Gord Downie. So. Many. Great. Songs. We Canadians are very posessive of this band. They were absolutely epic live. Some of the tracks are hard for non-Canadians to get because they make a lot of cultural references, and straight up guitar rock isn't as popular as it once was, but they are for sure worth diving deeper. One of my favs is Nautical Disaster. The whole song is a big metaphor.
