You've stumbled on Canada's unofficial national band and a serious treasure. This song is about a real, small Ontario town and is one of their most simple, beautiful songs. The Hip are uniquely Canadian, name-checking towns, cities, neighbourhoods and famous Canadians in so many of their songs. This song also makes a very artistic reference to the 1933 Christie Pit riots, a lower moment in Toronto history where anti-semitic bigots showed up at a baseball game waving Nazi flags and violence ensued. Great choice you guys - peace and love from Canada! RIP Gord, we miss you!

Before Gordon passed he was fighting brain cancer while advocating for first nations people. He wrote an album telling stories of a kid who ran away from a residential school trying to get home. Not only is this band important for Canada, but for us first nations people as well. Gordon was one of the few Canadians who recognized the tragedies of residential schools and living conditions of first nations people in Canada. May he R.I.P.

@@craigrobertson5030 So I was born in Toronto and have lived here all my 50+ years. Although I totally understand that yearning for being immersed in nature, I think that there are a few places in the city that do a pretty impressive imitation of wilderness, especially if you can dampen the ambient hum of the city. I live in the west end, so I'd recommend King's Mill Park and Etienne Brule Park, on either side of (more or less) Old Mill subway station ... There are paved roads and paths, but there are also tons of side trails through the woods that are pretty great. You can also get a similar effect a mere couple hundred meters from Yonge St: I think it's called Balfour Park, and it runs south through a ravine all the way to Rosedale and beyond. One end is at the southern tip of Mount Pleasant cemetery, and I've never actually followed the whole trail. (There's a staircase at Summerhill that's my "exit".) The greatetst thing about places like this is that you can feel like you're in the middle of nowhere, yet you can be on the subway in five minutes, if you need to be.

Asia! BJ! Yes! Yes! Yes! You just warmed my little Canadian heart! The Hip are considered by many to be Canada's band. Bobcaygeon is in Northern Ontario and considered "cottage country" down here in the cities. Gord Downie (lead singer) considered himself a poet first and their music reflects the Canadian experience with songs like Wheat Kings and 50 Mission Cap, etc. Here's a little rock history, The Hip song "New Orleans is sinking" from 1989 was not played for months after Katrina out of respect for our American cousins who were suffering back then. The phrase in the song is metaphorical, written years before, but it would have been in bad taste. Sadly, Gord passed away from a brain tumour in 2017, but they did a national tour just before he left us. Their final concert was in Kingston, Ontario (where they are from) and CBC played it free for all of us to see. The CBC filmed until The Hip were done, God he must have sung 30 songs it seemed! It was emotional for most of us knowing it was his last. RIP Gord Downie. Canada misses you. I won't be surprised if you grab more Canadian subscribers with The Hip. Now I'm going to watch your video! LOL!! Much Love!!

Hey, Canadians, Gord didn't just belong to you. He also belonged to us Americans who lived along the border or along one of the Lakes. He spoke to us about our own small towns (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and our own icons (Gus, the Polar Bear from Central Park), and our shared landmarks (Niagara Falls in several songs like Daredevil). Gord was our warrior poet, too. He was our hero. He was our voice. Small town America along the border is SO similar to small town Canada. We all lost Gord that October day. We all mourned. When people say, "The Hip really weren't known in America" I laugh because for some of us, for a chunk of land along the longest (formerly) unprotected border in the world, WE lost someone special, too. Pleasse don't dismiss us. I've been a fan since 1989 or 1990, the first time I heard them on Canadian Radio. That said, I love my Canuck family. In Gord We Trust. And THAT said, I've been waiting years for reaction videos to The Hip, and lately there have been many. Thank you, Asia and BJ. Great reaction. One thing, though, he didn't say HE could have been Willie Nelson. Gord said that (it) could have been THE Willie Nelson, (or it) could have been the wine. He overslept. He woke up late for work. They spent the previous night drinking and listening to country music (or smoking "Willie Weed"). He's hung over and now has to drive into Toronto for work, but he's thinking of calling off. But that's the wonderful thing about Gord's lyrics, and the Hip's music, they can be interpreted SO many ways.

At the end of this song guitarist Rob Baker has "This machine kills fascists" written on his guitar, a huge nod to singer\songwriter Woodie Guthrie who wrote a lot of anti-nazi songs during WW2 and had the same message scribbled on his guitar. You probably know Woodie's most famous song "This land is your land".

The Line about the checkered floors and The Men They Couldn't Hang is also an anti fascist statement. The line refers to The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto where the band The Men They Couldn't hang sang about famous fights in both England and Toronto between neo-nais and anti-fascists.

When it became public that Gord was dying and they were doing one last tour, CBC (Canada’s biggest national tv station) broadcast their final show live and most of the country watched. Me and a large group of friends filled one of our buddies living room/kitchen and no one sat the entire night, was as if we were all standing there live watching the concert, drinking, toking, singing along and well of course crying by the end. As a small town Canadian - thank you for revisiting The Hip. Blow at High Dough, New Orleans is Sinking, and Courage are more of their songs that you should check out. All are amazing. Toronto is the largest city in Canada, and carries with it big city vibes, like all big cities. But on the weekend it feels like everybody escapes the big city, fan out to cottage country, like Bobcaygeon, to get away, to find weekend peace, and certainly long-weekend peace. Bobcaygeon is a little town, part of the Kawartha Lakes/Trent-Severn waterway system, just northeast of Toronto. Beautiful vacation spot! The Tragically Hip is a rabbit hole well worth your while! Living 5 minutes from the Canadian border I was lucky to hear a ton of Canadian artists on the radio in the 90's and have seen a majority of them live driving up to Vancouver BC. Lots of hidden gems up there. Edit: I suggest locked inside the trunk of a car by the hip

Gord was more of a poet than a song writer. His lyrics tend to be somewhat cryptic. To understand his lyrics you need to have a fundamental understanding of Canadian politics/ social issues / history. He spent the time before he passed bringing Canada’s national shame (indigenous residential schools) under a spotlight that still burns after his death. When Gord passed the entire country shed a tear.

Fun fact: The guy that starts the riot in the video is Hugh Dillon, lead singer of the Headstones, another Kingston band. He started his band after being inspired by the Hip. He fronted for the remaining Hip band members for a few songs during a charity concert in 2019. The Headstones are more hard-rock/punk and are probably best known for a cover song Tweeter and the Monkey Man (originally by the Travelling Willburies) but have a solid library of their own songs. I know I speak for a lot of Canadians when I say that when we hear their songs, we are transported back to our youth -- autumn at the lake, bonfires, hanging with friends. If you want something fun, upbeat and a bit quirky you might want to check out the Bare Naked Ladies. They're probably best known for the theme to The Big Bang Theory as well as the song "if I Had a Million Dollars" but they have a lot of very fun songs. Some of my favourites would be "Brian Wilson", "One Week", and "Enid".

Thanks so much for reacting to this guys. The Hip are very, very important to us here and in general are considered music royalty. This was a hit from their 1998 album Phantom Power and one of their best. Bobcaygeon is a small town about 2 hours outside of Toronto, Gord Downie the singer and lyricist RIP is famous for writing about different places in Canada. This one is a story about a Cop in love, he chose Bobcaygeon simply because it rhymes with constellations. You've done yourself a big favour by discovering this band, it opens up a whole new world for many people, myself included. My next suggestion is to react to "Ahead by a century" and to get the REAL effect of the Hip you need to hear them live. I'd recommend Ahead by a century live at woodstock '99.

Thanks for introducing me to this band. I'm from Scotland, but I've actually visited Bobcaygeon, in 1978 when my family and I spent a few idyllic days living on a houseboat on the lake. It was a friendly quaint little town then and I very much enjoyed my stay. I really hope it hasn't changed too much.

When Gord revealed he was sick the band did a farewell tour across the entire country as a final goodbye. Literally the only celebrity I’ve ever been upset about losing the man was a class act and did a lot for First Nations in Canada.

You got it. BOB-CAY-JON is how you say it. It is a small town in Muskoka close to where I live. Muskoka is an area of small towns , lakes, forest, couple hours drive north of Toronto. the lyric by the way is "Could have been the Willie Nelson, could have been the wine" meaning the weed. It could have been the weed, it could have been the wine.

I was in Bobcaygeon last summer (yes, you pronounced it correctly). Nice little town in cottage country. It was chosen mostly because the name fit in with the other lyrics of the song.

I grew up in Bobcaygeon in the 70s, 80s and 90s, and Gord's parents actually moved there in their retirement years. And the lyrics are true. As a kid I used to look up and watch the stars and they would appear one star at a time till all of a sudden the sky was full. Or it seemed that way anyways. Great place. Bobcaygeon or Caygeon for us locals is made up of 3 Islands. Beautiful place. Was an amazing olace to grow up.

A long time ago I remember an interviewer asked Gord to describe his vocal style. Gord said he pretends like rats are biting at his ankles. I always thought that was a beautiful way to describe it. He was a true artist, and poet, always.

I grew up on the opposite side of the lake from Bobcaygeon... this is one our theme songs. The other is Neil Young's "Helpless" that references "a small town in north Ontario". That town is Omemee, at the opposite end of Pigeon Lake from Bobcaygeon.

They were on my radar back in the early 2000's but this song and especially the video elevated them into my favorite band above all else by miles. The end of the video showed me they were about music over fame, and the idea of Gord's character's lover not being some 10/10 supermodel made me sure they valued substance over appearances and don't flatter themselves. Their music did not disappoint me.

Being a Canadian Gen Xr of course I love this band. They have so many great songs and are very uniquely Canadian. I think all of us can relate to really all of their songs in one way or another. They are an incredible voice and representation of what our lives have been like. Bobcaygeon is a small town in Canada a little over an hour away from the east end of Toronto. I have lived in and around Bobcaygeon most of my life and still do to this day. This area is a tourist area with lots of lakes and cottages. The summer here is always amazing and incredibly beautiful. This place brings peace to your soul.

One of the only songs I've done at Karaoke...in a room full of musicians. I'm not a singer, but they wanted me to sing this, so I did. Was at a tribute concert to Gord backstage a few days after he died in Toronto, just an absolute love fest with family and friends. Felt like there were maybe more people backstage than in the audience... it was just an amazing send off to him.

When Gord did his last concert in Kingston it was broadcast nationally for all to see...for free...Canada literally stopped for 2 hrs ...11 million people tuned in to watch...equivalent to 100 million Americans...and when he passed..a piece of all our hearts rested with him....The Hip were that important to us....
