I know this is supposed a video on bases, but I just wanted to say I love that style of painting. Looks so crisp, clean, and vibrant. I'm not even sure how I'd describe it, realistic stylised fantasy? Glad this came up in my feed and I'll definitely check out some more of your videos. Hopefully I can pick up some tips.

I painted many figures in the 80’s we always used epoxy putty to make bases interesting, using beach pebbles as a plinth with epoxy putty to cover and mount made for some great bases.

At this point with what you've painted, we are going to need to see a battle report! You can also mirror your printed bases for large runs, doesn't do enough on its own, but helps. Great video!

Mirroring. Totally forgot about that but a great suggestion too. I'll mirror the next set cause I still need more. I was thinking of doing a battle report just because the series of Ratmen videos is meant to be about painting for gaming, so seems like that would be it's natural end, but I can't promise anything :D

100% agree with the backdrops sentiment. And I say that as a classically trained painter.

If it wasn't for the fact that the mini itself would 100% beat anything I could do anyway with most of the artists that do the backdrops, I'd probably be way more salty about them as well. It's the same kind of idea that made me shy away from competitions with the bases.

Your painting is always inspiring. Getting a 3d printer has been a game changer in the basing game; being able to find and print bases as well as flair/fluff to go on those bases has made basing staggeringly easy for us lazy folks.

Don't get me wrong I really do love a nice detailed and filled out display base! It's just in my head I separate them and merit each differently. Like, if I were do a painting competition I think I'd have a category 'best basing' Since it really is deferent skills and techniques, but not factor the basing into the painting part. So I don't hate your bases, specially when we can see the effort being put into them! Just Bases in general XD

I agree wholeheartedly with hating basing for lazy/petty reasons. When I was getting back into the hobby, I posted some WIP models with a silly caption, which immediately attracted a comment telling me to base my minis. This spawned a thread of people talking abouthow much they hated unbased minis. Basing and "thin your paints!" are the two lazy criticisms I hate the most. Nowadays, I treat basing as a gradual process; something to do when I don't want to start spending money on new models, but still want to do hobby stuff.

I love the solidarity here, I knew I couldn't be the only one! I hate that kind of 'elitism' in painting too. Some of it is just people's genuine feelings so I don't think they're trying to be malicious. But as I pointed out in the video a whole company spent a decade+ not basing their minis and were the standard for well painted minis at the time. Which means other ways of doing things work and are fine too. That's why I never try and tell people what has to be done, only how they might be able to improve on what they want to do.

Wow, what a great job on painting those rats. That non metalic is awsome! Boy oh boy! I am about to print them by myself and paint them. I won't try to do that not metalic though, i am to far from that skill and patience to do that. Again, they are amazing painted minis!

@PaintmanJourneying
@PaintmanJourneying Жыл бұрын
The paint on my desk is actually the one that got me more into heavy body acrylics. It's the scale artist line that I transfered to dropper bottles. But most of them are blends. When doing videos with mixes, using single pigments that can be found in more than one paint line I just feel will be more useful than using a specific blend of a specific companies specific paint line. Yellow oxide is yellow oxide, weather it's Jo Sonja, kimera, liquitex or others. Also laziness, I hate opening and putting out paint. So using less colours actually feels like less work to me XD

I've always wondered about the value of elaborate bases in gaming. Seems like they limit portability from one battle field to the next, even from one position on the battlefield to the next, unless they are generic. But I come to this video as a painting newb who has never played a mini game, so might be clueless. Nice ratman.

My very first bases when I was 16 and like super brand new to the game were sparkles. Literal sparkles to try and mimic snow. I was a definite noob too. As you can imagine that case became really rather sparkly when moving those models back and forth 😆

I used to do bases but stopped. I had a great winter snow based army but hated using them on different tables. They always clashed. Green table and snow bases doesn't work. I switched to clear bases years ago and have never looked back. They are great and never clash with the table.

I totally agree with you on the base thing. If your building a diorama or maybe if its like the center piece of your army build up a fancy base but not for regular troops. I have that dominion box and I want to comvert my Yndrasta because I don't like her staircase following her around. Also, what brand are those tubes of artist paint? They have the perfect finish, not too matte, not too glossy almost a satin but just slightly less. I really want to try that paint out lol. Edit: I wrote this too early, I see it's Jo Sonja.

Just found your videos and have been really enjoying them! Love all the OPR features as well. Prepainting bases before gluing the models on always made me nervous. Do you find that the superglue binds the mini to the base decently, even with paint on the resin? It might be better than my current process of scratching some hashmarks into the two surfaces I am gluing together and hoping for the best. Resin tends not to glue well. Also, I tend to overuse glue. I am scared that the dried glue might mess up my painting.
@PaintmanJourneying
@PaintmanJourneying 7 ай бұрын
I think for me it really depends on the model, if the joints in the ankles are weak, I kind of would rather it break off the base than at the ankles should it take a tumble x_x But for most I will do the hashtag scoring as well under the feet and on the base, usually I'll do it with models with bigger feet since most of it gets hidden away under them. For glue I use a gorilla glue gel, which is a little easier to control the amount, but also because it goes on in a glob and does not spread until you press it down, usually it'll get right into the hashtag and not spread any further and can deal with things where there's a bit more of a gap between foot and base thanks to some of the details. As the glue dries it can become a bit frosty around the feet from the vapors which might cover the painting a bit, but if you hit it with varnish again after it can help get rid of some of that effect.

It depends on the Paper being used for the wet pallet. Scale 75/Army painter/Redgrass pallet papers don't have a hydrophobic effect which is what cause the paint to pool up when using Parchment/Dspaie papers. I use Costco brand parchment which has a slight hydrophobic effect which is why my paint beads up on the wet pallet.

I see the edges on your OPR bases also come out bumpy in some places. I've tried changing a bunch of settings on my 3D printer to get them to come out smooth but at this point I am convinced they are just poorly supported.
@PaintmanJourneying
@PaintmanJourneying Жыл бұрын
This is actually the reason I got a flex plate for my printer and prefer printing bases flat. Cause all bases from everywhere come out with bumps just from the pull force of those first bunch of layers while the resin is still soft. So not just OPR. Only problem is creators are starting to hollow out their bases now which can't print flat.
@JPorry
@JPorry Жыл бұрын
@@PaintmanJourneying I hate 3d printing bases for this same reason. I like to slice the top of the base in 3d builder or meshmixer and print just that part flat on the build plate, then I just stick it to a regular base. It looks pretty good, and you save some resin too.
@PaintmanJourneying
@PaintmanJourneying Жыл бұрын
@@JPorry Really great strategy too. If you print them flat, don't even need to slice them separate, just drop them below the print bed in the slicer and it'll slice them that way. My only problem is I don't have many bases to glue them onto at the moment 🙃

I made the decision early on that ALL of my bases would be flat black. The miniature is the point. The base just serves to keep the mini standing up.

I've to disagree about bases, if well done add a flavour to the minis, f.e. I base my civilians minis from Stargrave on a base resembling Blackstone Fortress style, scratchbuild with plasticard and sprue's bits. This give omogeneity to the group. Naturally the main focus had to be on the figure, but the base give an hint were the action is. P.s. excellent paint job for your not-Skavens.👍

I know this video is about basing but those rats would look better with TMM as all models do. NMM is a gimmick and just doesn't look as good. Also it looks nothing like real metal. They look great overall though.

I love making bases. Tiny bits of terrain. More room for expression. Love terrain, love bases. And I feel like your interpretation of what was going on with those bases in those competitions is kind of biased and beside the point. People appreciate customization and extra effort. Nothing surprising about that. And that trend WILL return. All trends eventually return. Prepare thyself.
@PaintmanJourneying
@PaintmanJourneying Жыл бұрын
I think my point was that basing is a different skill, one that people either love to do or don't like to do, which means being required to do them just to appeal to a majority that believes it's required, can make someone hate it even more. Thus my reference to Rackham miniatures where they didn't base their models and let the painting stand on it's own merit. It's a reminder that people can and do enjoy nice paint jobs even without a pretty base. It was not to say that nice bases aren't appreciated, I really do like a nice base and respect anyone that does enjoy doing them really well. Specially when as part of a scene or army on display. But I don't like doing them, so of course it's going to make me salty that the most I'd have ever gotten on CMON was a 6 with unfinished bases, regardless of how good the painting actually was, which forced me to do them. So ya, totally biased, but I was only answering why I hated them, not that they didn't have any merit in the hobby

It's not a negative comment to be told your not the best painter. How could you be with people like Ben Commets and Richard Gray and Marcus Frishco around. It doesn't mean your a bad painter, but being the best? Very very unlikely.
