As a Scotland fan, I have slowly come to terms with the defeat over the last few days because this wasn't embarassing like it would have been in yesteryear, it was a defeat against a genuinely good team that could have won four of five matches

I believe the reason why Italy were so composed after being 2 tries down after 20 minutes was their the first half performance against France. Italy were sure they could get back in the game because their defence won't crumble and Scotland will struggle to keep crazy high tempo on attack. That first half against France made all the difference. (Fischetti also said something similar in a post game interview after the sco game)

After years of hammerings, along with slight showings of promise (2007, 2013) a losing streak of near fifty games, and once resorting to playing a flanker at scrum half, Italian rugby looks to finally be coming of age. I wont lie when I was younger I did enjoy the near annual thumping of Italy but as I've grown older (and been on the side of batterings in my local team myself) I couldn't be happier for them. The day Italy win a six nations which could be in the next decade or so, I will be celebrating with them.

Good work on the tactical detail. Was at the Game and Italy fed off the intensity of the crowd especially when Horne's try was disallowed. There is much talk in sport of how momentum can be difficult to get back when it shifts against you - this was an absolute lesson in this aspect and is a factor that can't be underestimated in this game. Well played Italy. When assessing the Italian nearly win against France, if you are being objective, they played 40 minutes against 14 men and couldn't get the job done. Italy are going in the right direction undeniably and should be ambitious for performances in 2025 given the talent they have but may still struggle in arm wrestles against the big boys (as evidenced by Ireland result).

@@Zomo1553 Agree with all of that bar Wales... I don't see much promise in that Welsh side aside from a lot of heart. This really shuts up those demanding Italy be thrown out of the 6N. Anyone who actually follows union closely and across the globe knew that their u20s were getting better and better. Players like Gritti, Gallorini, Odiase and Scalabrin are the next names to match those of Menoncello and Marin. If anything Georgia also need adding to the 6N. Their u20s are higher ranked than Wales and Scotland. Quesada is a great coach too. I can see some similarity to the emerging Pumas of the early 2000s for example in the kicking game and exit strategy.

Interesting the number of times you identified Italy winning breakdowns with just one player. I don't understand Watson and Ritchie absence from this squad and don't think it's a coincidence that Scotland aren't competing at the breakdown as much now (this is just an impression from watching the games, no idea if stats back it up). I'm not convinced by Christie, Dempsey or Darge. Scotland have moved on or lost a number of players over the last few years who had real leadership and experience (Ritchie, Watson, J.Gray, Harris, Hogg, Brown, McInally, Price) and I think they're lacking a bit of that now. There was an article on the BBC about scotland rugby floating the notion that the attack is the problem and Russel might not be the best option at 10, which is frankly riduclous, like arguing Haaland is a problem for Man City, or Phil Foden shouldn't play for England. Scotlands real issue is in the forwards. They have an undersized pack, poor second rows now especially compared to the other nations, forwards not carrying well enough (much like Englands before the last couple of games), an unreliable set piece, lack of depth at prop in particular and an unconvincing back row. Their pack is arguably the worst in the 6 nations, I don't think any of them get in any of the other sides, maybe Turner in at hooker for Italy.
