Great analysis Squidge as always. One thing missed that Nick Bishop on Rugbypass identified is the new clear clean out roles at breakdown by whitelock, Taukei’aho and Barrett supported by the Backs while Cane and Savea have more roaming roles out wide. Taukei’aho and Frizell were 2 carry options up the middle. The high ball was more protected and taken by AB’s compared to first test.

I can't agree that it's a golden age of test rugby, because most matches between the very top sides are boring. This match stood out as an absolute gem and there are many other exceptions, but in general matches between South Africa, Australia, NZ, England, Wales and Ireland are attritional, tactical, very slow and lacking in entertainment value.

11:10 as an All Blacks fan this is the best description of what I feel’s gone wrong with the team I’ve seen. I’d argue the rot first set in with the lions tour but apart from that it’s spot on.

It does hit the nail on the head. During the Hansen era the ABs were more cohesive, every player a guardian of a specific jersey. Also, they were masters of the 10mins before and after halftime. Felt like they always hit a different gear during those periods which created scoreboard pressure. As a Bok supporter I was...well...relieved that Am scored. It came just after the 2nd try, ABs were leading 15-0 and had the opportunity to really put the screws on but instead it was a hopeless kick (Squidge used a different term) from Havili and moments later the score was 15-7. The ABs worked very hard up to that point and it was kind of bizarre to see them giving up that scoreboard pressure in the final 10mins of the first half. That's what allowed the Boks to come back and even get ahead for a brief period. Anyway, it links in to the broader point of not really knowing what this Ian Foster team really represent. Perhaps that's a good thing? Maybe they'll hit their stride now that the likes of Schmidt is in the ranks?

Yeah trying to play like the Northern teams. Against France and the last test against Ireland when All Blacks were more direct in the 2nd half’s they made big comebacks. In the last game against South Africa they played that way the entire game. Players are talented enough time to play NZ rugby and die that way if they have to

@@benrobinson375 nah I think 2016 there was a proper transition in place even with all the retirements there were enough experienced players in their positions to handle things but then the other teams started getting better and some of the new players dropped off in their form or got injured out/fell out of favour and after 2017 it was catch up all the way

If we pay tribute to the All Blacks I think Jason Ryan needs a mention, in both tests he was in charge of the AB forwards you could see marked improvement in their set piece. In Mbombela they were able to prevent the Boks from scoring a maul try and at Ellis Park they were scrumming well, were better in the lineouts than we were, and just a lot more structured in general.

I think one thing you're missing out on with the early bench swaps for the Boks was Marx for Dweba. At a certain point you have to cut your losses cuz Dweba's line-out throw was abysmal and the Boks needed Marx to steady the ship

I reckon Dweba just needs more time to fix that part of his game, He's a decent carrier of the ball and a massive unit. Like Marx when he first started he needs some tweaking to get it right but not sure we can write him off completely.

To me it raised an interesting thing though of do the SBs really need to be so rigid in having each front row play as a 3. For example I think it wouldn’t have hurt to have the props come on at their normal time so they weren’t gassed by the end, because bad lineout days happen for hookers so you’d think they should reserve the option to swap them out alone. Marx can easily play 50-60 mins if needed but not so for the reserve props

Is it really a coincidence that NZ put together their most analysis driven game with Joe Schmidt literally analysing and selecting for them? A guy who is known for his ability to put together a specific gameplay and set/power plays to nullify a defence. @@Trajan2401 I think anyone who can marry Schmidt's tactics and power plays with the ability to also offload and play some heads up rugby will do a fine job, and with the talent of NZ it a terrifying thought even without Razor in my opinion. I mean I spose they are basically doing the opposite of Ireland and adding some magic Schmidt dust to a offloading side where as Ireland already have that in the locker and are now looking to open up the game more and develop new attacking structures and offload more. I don't know which way is better but am worried that Ireland still use a lot of Joe's rucking structures (POC was a real disciple of his) and he probably knows the weaknesses of this better than anyone else, that is the main reason I am afraid.

Have the All Blacks assumed winning games?, I can't believe that, but they didn't adapt or changed the game plan when things weren't going their way in the 1st test against the springboks. Or have countries simply upped their game and skill level? I think it's both. This is great for world Rugby. No doubt the All Blacks will take a good hard look at themselves and sort things out. The All Black management have a lot to ponder, and fix including themselves to get everyone on the same winning page again. Don't take Argentina for granted, after giving the Australians a good old fashion hiding. Or even the Australians who are down, but not out. It's shaping up to be a close championship this year, 1st time I feel anxious, ranked 5th in the world, is unaccustomed territory for us. Anybodies game boys, go get em. 😆

Okay so I've paused this video right at the start. I'm going into it as a Bok fan who is hurting a little bit. Here are my thoughts before we go in and I'm going to see if my mind is changed by the end: - we didn't play badly. It was a decent game. NZ was just better than us on that given day - NZ lifted their game immensely and it's the best I've seen them since... Since before the last world cup - Dweba was shocking, costing us a scrum right at the start and then the first offensive lineout. Was a mistake not to play Malcolm "Mincemeat" Marx - Very big gamble on Vermeulen. I love him but he wasn't ready - The disallowed try was a real obstruction and was a fair decision - The penalty was the correct decision instead of a penalty try, even though I believe we would have scored - The challenge on Mapimpi was a shocking miss - The ref was not bad, I think he had a fair game. Let's watch!!

Three things for me. 1) Jason Ryan impact cant be understated. Hes had the fowards for two weeks and their improvement has been phenominal. When have we ever seen a post 2018 SA get that well beaten up front. If the all black forwards continue to find their groove they will be very hard to beat. 2) Foster has always been first and foremost a great attack coach. I think we saw this in the weekend and i think the way the managent team is structured going forward his focus on this area will pay dividends. 3) Joe Scmidth is now the shadow head coach. In the past All black teams out of (humble) arrogance have gone about their business with the mindset of "if we can play our game the way we want to, no body can beat us". As teams have gotten better (and the all blacks worse), we havent been able to get into our groove and have largely won games on indivial brilliance or oppositon mistakes. Joe will change that as he has proven time and time again with ireland that their isnt a better coach in world rugby at getting his team to adopt a plan that not only plays to their strengths but specifically targets areas of the oppostion. What made the difference last Saturday was that the All Blacks had unity in all aspects of the game: scrums, rucks, line-outs, set piece, turn-over, high ball takes, standing up in the tackle, player support when needed without exception. The fact is that this Bok performance may well be good enough to beat any other side, including France & Ireland, however the All Blacks read everything so well & put the game beyond doubt after reaching 0-15 in spite of the Boks temporarily taking a slight lead which, evidently, meant little & no wonder the Ellis Park crowd was suitably stunned. Bravo the All Blacks & a thumping good analysis in this video. Good one!

If you listen to Ian Foster being interviewed he said that in this game the players showed more patients then in past games. Which allowed the system to work. The previous week they pushed passes that weren't there. This by all means was not a polished performance but I have total faith in Ian Foster to take the All Blacks to the world cup final and win it. It is still a long way off so alot can happen in that time but I am backing my team. If you hear Mike Cron interviewed about Jason Ryan becoming forwards coach he said that Ian Foster is one of the best backs attacking coaches he has ever seen. With him now taking a more hands on roll with the attack and Joe Schmitt in the mix I am hoping the All Blacks will be a formidable force. I also believe a key factor in the AB's win over the Springboks is the ref didn't allow the Springboks to slow the game down with BS injuries like they did the week before and like Ireland were able to do. Not complaining that they do it, that's gamesmanship. But if the referee does this in future it will play into the AB's hands. Just my 2 cents!

It's true that the gaps have largely closed. At least among about 7 teams or so. Under that there are a few good teams (about 4 or 5) that I would argue still struggle with consistency (Japan, Georgia, Argentina, Scotland, Fiji..maybe Italy?). Once you go under that there is still a massive gap. But as you say it's a huge improvement over the 3 team domination that has existed for decades in rugby.

@@btcdunks8476 Argentina are massively overrated. They struggled at home against an Australia squad destroyed by injuries, and a Scotland squad without many of their best players. It's pointless even comparing them to Ireland as they're in a completely different league from the likes of Argentina. Even your nonsense about World Cup results wears thin quickly. Ireland may not have gone beyond the QF. But it's not as though it's always been an even field. In 2015, Argentina scraped into the semifinals, where they got battered by the team that just edged Scotland by a single point. However, Argentina only had to face the likes of Namibia, Georgia, and Tonga in the pools. Meaning when they reached Ireland in the QF, they had most of their first choice team available while Ireland did not. In 2019, Argentina were again talked up massively pre-tournament. Yet they didn't even manage to qualify from their pool. Oh, and the Jocks have also reached the SF stages of a World Cup. Came a lot closer than Argentina did to reaching the Final too. Argentina have in fact only won two games against the Jocks in more than ten years. Not a record to be shouting about given they're not a top five team themselves. Argentina are undoubtely one of the most overrated teams in World Rugby at the present time.

I think this Ellis Park test match is going to turn into a major turning point for the All Blacks and it shows the impact of Jason Ryan and Joe Schmidt coming onboard. I believe we just witnessed the rebirth of the All Blacks who are only going to get better as they spend more time with Schmidt and Ryan coaching them. By the end of the Rugby Championship I expect the All Blacks pack will be playing with the intensity, ruthlessness and dominance of the Crusaders pack.

A lot of NZ really want to attribute the win to RM. Truth is, he passed well, although they didn’t really amount to much. His tactical kicking wasn’t good, he threw the intercept that we luckily escaped from, he failed to exit the 22 well on 3 seperate occasions. We scored 2 tries running outve the 22 where RM didn’t feature, other than through the hands passing. Our last try came from a Jordie clearance. I think Ritchie played well, but we need to keep it in perspective

Joe Schmidt input helped in this game ( I believe ) . Compare to normal - flat line - BB, AS ,RM box kicks ( appalling implementation game after game ) . RM & DH worked well - as stated here and obvious live the likes of Caleb Clarke misunderstanding where he had to be . So at least 2 promising moves went nowhere - that's ok = as hopefully we continue to play with space, options . With flat back lines and rush D - expecting RM. BB, DH to break gaps is stupidity ( RM is always 2 manned , one at feet to stop hip work ) - given the D stand so closer near ball - then spaces further out . Having DH last year smash up was stupidity. So hopefully RM/DH continued to be given space - the use of the outer 4 should only improve .- great to see cut backs by Clarke and width use as well. You denigrate passing somewhat - so many Crusaders tries are from Ritchies best in the world passing . When AS throws that perfect pass near line to hit the man in the gap - the pass is lovely . passes win lots of games . I just have a great love of passing - don't even follow football - where its pundits rightly know it's work . Both RM and BB are really great scramble defenders and great positional awareness - both saved lots of tries vs ABs - even if they can be bumped by the big men

Yes, he was offered diversion, which if you know anything about the law means the offence has to be minor, it has to be heard and decided by magistrate and consented to by the prosecution. This obviously meant they had no evidence to prove their allegations and could only get him on something g minor which In this case was likely drunk and disorderly conduct. Regarding his apology, he was obviously compelled by the NZRU to take responsibility for a messy situation and front a public apology so he could get back to playing. Squidge is a weirdo for passing judgement on someone who was never convicted of anything and acting as if he was there and knows all of the facts.

I always agree with your analysis of a game, but man… there were 4 “try scoring” (or stopping ) penalties in this game that went unpunished that it just irritated me. The boks committed 1 foul and the AB committed 3. The only punishment for these 4 fouls was 2 yellow cards. Some of the fouls were straight up malicious and unsportsmanlike as well.

I feel like you’re missing the idea that he puts forward: playing the ref is part of the game according to Squidge. I don’t agree with it and would rather it be consistent but it is a point. My problem with that whole dynamic is, what if the ref just favours a team on the day? So one lot gets away with the same things others get punished for? But we can’t quantify or prove it, it’s only based on opinion. We can’t prove malice where mistakes are the given “reason.”

(SA is an AFL - Australian Rules Football state) This is the first time in 20 years a game with the Wallabies has been played here. The potential for rugby in South Australia is huge.

Terrific analysis! Perhaps the strategy of the Boks playing at altitude backfired somewhat. As you reported, and other analysts have also commented especially the fact that many in the home side no longer habitually play in those conditions and so lost the expected advantage, the need for the SA's to go to the bench so early led to a conditioning issue in the final 10 minutes for them. This, inspite of a player advantage, saw the AB's superior fitness prevail and get the result?

You are spot on squidge, by poor selections, they had to bring the bomb squad on early, and despite their " injury breaks" every ten minutes, and water breaks ( unsure what page that law is on) every 20 minutes, they ran out of gas in the last ten. One thing I noticed last week and this week was that when we are forced to shift our centres out to the wing we lose on the defence in the middle channels and the ABs exploited that massively. While having Willie on was great I think having Herchel on instead and moving Jaden to the wing might have been better. Or alternatively moving Damian or Damian (lol) to Wing and leaving Lukanyo at 13? just feels like we opening ourselves up a lot there.

don't know what it is about this year the all blacks go from 0 to hero, cos since the TRC is over now we won yay, but looking at this performance, I think this is actually n.zs best and most impressive performance, rather than the last 2 weeks where we managed to beat a very good aussie side(on the night, they have a lot of issues) and then a much better game all round 2 days ago way too good for aussie. great analysis, and at least in this the Boks get a fair shout as they did play well, interesting take on the drop goal debacle, with Mo'unga at 10 this won't be a problem and I think it is likely the ABs will revert to their old ways of being very structured while backing their skills and ability to execute attack and counter-attack under pressure and having a plan B of winning at any cost. Two well-matched sides, separated by a 10-point score i.e. when Whitelock cynically scratched a 7-pointer against in favour of a 3-pointer for. Blocking? Really!!!? And then there was the rip that was deemed to be a forward pass - Am's try disallowed. Small margins. The ref in general had a good very game, but made a couple of crucial bad calls. SA - Dweba and Jantjes; lessons learnt. Vermeulen, not fit, so don't play him yet. Also, as a coach, if you lose a 15, you don't need to shuffle your entire backline, thereby weakening the defence. Also, if the captain isn't on fire and also calling the shots, sub him. Give All Blacks an inch and they'll take a mile - same as the French, best attacking teams in the world.

I think it's great to lose. Especially the way the Boks did. Gotta find out how teams might exploit you. A few things we saw, Daune not fit, but played anyways, Marx maybe should start vital matches. I think the backs did awesome jobs considering the early injury. Definitely looked tired at the end there, and playing in Johannesburg with those early subs, it was always gonna be a tough last few. I think Janjies should have been subbed in as well. Small things ended up causing big points. Lots to learn for the younger guys.

Fantastic analysis. I too thought it was a great game that the All Black won rather than the Springboks lost. I loved the improvisation that came out of the Boks backline with the forced positional change. I'd like to have seen a little more analysis of how the All Blacks managed to shift the battle between the forwards, especially in the set pieces. Not sure what the scrum penalty count was in the end, but it certainly wasn't dominated by the Springboks and losing four lineouts on their own throw-in is not something you would expect from the Boks.

ABs were the better actors on the day. Retallic must get an Oscar end of year. To block and trip people and then shouting murder when you can't get to a player to tackle, is pure acting talent. Squidge, I'd love to hear a bit more on your thoughts of Lukhanyo Am being pushed to the wing, especially after it happened again against the Wallabies on Saturday. You briefly mentioned that you probably wouldn't want our best 13 on the wing every week, and that he turned inside to defend Ioane as if defending as a 13 when he was on the wing. The Springboks have now twice shifted their entire backline during a Test, ending with Willemse at 12, De Allende at 13 and Am at 14. However, it appears that our famous defence becomes quite fragile without Lukhanyo organising from 13. The Boks conceded four times and looked vulnerable against the AB's with Am on the wing, and both second half tries conceded against the Wallabies on Saturday were when Am was on the wing. I believe the Boks are a better team with Am at 13 organising things, following in the footsteps of the dominant Springbok (2007-2009) and All Black (2010 - 2016) teams with Jacque Fourie and Conrad Smith organising defences. If the Boks want Willemse as an extra distributor at 12, I would rather sacrfice De Allende than Am, although that is harsh on DDA as he's been sublime at 12, if perhaps a little one dimensional. I still support your view as Willie le Roux as the Boks best 15, as our attack is a different animal with him co-ordinating things. If we're trying to bring variation to our attack, and we may need it to convert the pressure we build in the opposition 22 without scoring, then perhaps attempting Willemse at 12, Am at 13 and le Roux at 15 would be an option. DDA did start his Bok career on the wing so I wouldn't be opposed to shifting him to 14 until Kolbe is back. Alternatively, after a shocker against the Wallabies on Saturday, perhaps giving Willemse a run at 10 in place of Pollard could be an option. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this in the future. We got the solution in Adelaide.. Willemse 10,De Allende 12,Le roux 15 works when we keep the ball alive.. De Allende varied his game beautifully, the last time I saw his bullet pass that Willie drifted on for Mapimpi 's try was literally 2012..Though our attack looks better with Willemse at 10....He'll have to work on his kicking.. But even if he becomes the perfect 10..Don't see them dropping Polly, he is the better game manager, something Damian is still working on.. World cup backline if everyone is fit.. 9.Hendrikse 10..Pollard 11.Pimps 12.DDA 13.Am 14.Kolbe 15..Willemse... with Willemse going to flyhalf second half, Le Roux to fullback..

This game has Joe Schmidt’s fingerprints all over it and the ABs will benefit immensely moving forward. Joe masterminded/Invented the rush defence that not only beat the ABs a couple of times, but also teams now use it against the ABs. How ironic that he is now the one that’s in charge of beating the rush defence as the ABs Attack coach.
