Wales moved just one step away from the almighty Jam Slam as they dismantled Italy in the Roman sunshine. So how did Wales create their various tries, and what went wrong again for Italy?

I've always believed Wales to be probably the most streetwise team in the six nations. They just seem to know the nuances of the game inside out. That first try (& your fine analysis of it) was a prime example. A little on the sly side, but brilliant never the less.

Do you honestly believe the Barnes block that significant of a difference. It helps don’t get me wrong. But wales will score that try most of the time. Canna will still be held by J Davies movement. Important fact: Italy the same day elected a new president of the italian federation of rugby. The old president got 3% of the preferences. The new one already changed some major key men in the movement. Clearly this won't change a lot in the short term but we Italians fans hope this is a new much needed beginning.

Most analysis do not take into account all of the picture when talking about Italy. We fielded around 200 caps vs more than 900. The most capped player was Canna with 50, but most of them were at 10 and his moving at 12 is still not convincing anyone. Absences: - Ghiraldini decided to retire 1 day before the squad was called, leaving Bigi (honest player but not up to par) as the only experienced solution at 2. - Polledri, best back row since Sergio - Morisi, solid experienced 12 - Campagnaro, arguably our best center of the last 15 years. - Minozzi, best fullback/winger and finisher of the last 15 years, did not accept the call by Smith (pressured by Wasps to remain when Odogwu was called to the England squad, in exchange for a renewal of his contract?) - Hayward also decided to retire from international rugby immediately before the 6N, leaving Smith to play Trulla who (and I can’t stretch this enough) HAS NEVER PLAYED PROFESSIONAL RUGBY at 15. Padovani was injured so he could not start before adding game time with Benetton. Some selections by Smith did not help but I’m sure all of those mentioned would have been in the squad and actually made it more competitive. Just imagine a back line with Garbisi 10, Morisi 12, Campagnaro 13, Ioane 11 Bellini 14 and Minozzi 15. Our problems are clearly there, but they are all coming from one big main problem, lack of depth and valid alternatives for all roles, some of which key for modern rugby.

Reminds me of 2019 France. They had many of the same players they have now and all it took was a good head coach and a defensive coach that really knows his shit to turn them into a world class side. I really wonder that Italy would be capable of if Edwards was their defensive coach.

@@lp6111 its like they just can't get the right game plan with the right players to work. And Italy aren't a bad side they have some great players they just lack the drive to make it work or the motivation to fight back from a mistake. And I'm not playing to crude stereotypes here I've noticed this with Italy for about 2 years now is that once they make a mistake the game they play just deteriorates and their opponent just run them down.

Honestly I think Italy's biggest problem is that they never win. Yeah, that sounds stupid. But look at it this way - imagine if you had to play test rugby without ever having the experience of winning. They don't have any motivation, and experience of winning, their supporters know they're going to lose before the game has begun. Italy need to play games against tier 2 nations such as Japan, Fiji, Tonga, Uruguay etc. If those teams develop together they'll kindle winning spirit in both the Italian side and the Italian nation.
@xxwales15xx33
@xxwales15xx33 3 жыл бұрын
A relegation format while adding 2 teams to the six nations would work I think, gives Italy a better chance to win more games while having the fear of being relegated so maybe they'll be motivated to do better. A lot easier said than done but that's what I would do
@jacobb7215
@jacobb7215 3 жыл бұрын
@@xxwales15xx33 See I don’t think that’d be beneficial. If you add Georgia, you add another whipping boy, but if you add a top tier team like South Africa it’s no longer the proper authentic European six nations. What should be done is the restructuring of the autumn internationals, so top tier teams play eachother, and tier 2 teams play eachother - imagine a 6 team competition with Italy, Japan, Argentina, Fiji, Tonga and Uruguay/Tonga

They would achieve a grand slam if the were in the 6 nations!! And I'm not far to think the same about Japan, even thought it as to be confirmed in the next world cup.

@@jacobb7215 Youre not considering the cost of travelling. Would be far to much money for the Pacific nations to travel that much and consistently every year. Tier 2 teams playing each other simply won't generate the money or exposure needed for that either. The only way for the these teams to get better is to expose them more to tier 1 rugby. Edit: also find it baffling how you consider Argentina a tier 2 team...

A Grand Slam should obviously also result in a Six Nations title, so organisers solved the problem of other teams having more bonus points by awarding a team an additional three points should they win all five of their matches in the championship. Therefore, this ensures that a Grand Slam winning team would top the table with at least 23 points.

Brex clearly isn't the solution, although he's probably something like 5th choice in the centre (Morisi, Zanon, and Campagnaro would all come ahead of him if fit), so hopefully that experiment will end soon. On the point about Canna and Garbisi not being compatible in attack, I think it made enough sense with Violi or Braley at 9, but Varney is such a more varied threat with his distribution, that they can afford to have someone more direct at 12. And hopefully that someone will be Fred Mori. Oh, and an Easter egg for anyone still reading this comment by the kind of weirdo who watches Italian league matches on youtube because what better way is there to learn Italian? The Italy of the Italian league, because they lose all their matches and concede tries from everywhere, are Lazio, and yet they are also the Italy of the Italian league because they have a 10 born in the year 2000 who just screams potential. His name is Giovanni Montemauri, and, like Garbisi, I can't wait to see what he could do with some better players around him. I might be wrong, but remember that name. You might see him wearing another shade of blue in the not-too-distant future (and not just because he's been called up to the national 7s team).
@calex7763
@calex7763 3 жыл бұрын
Very good insight. But just so you know brex is ahead of Morisi, morisi has been injured in the past but has been fully fit and playing for benetton in the past 3 or more games. The thing is brex is our best centre at defending, he did show it during this match with some great anticipation, yes the part squidge showed was poor but that doesn’t mean he can’t defend. I’ve never ever seen him as a leader so I would be shocked if he is the person who is meant to be organising that defence. However overall his very good intelligence defensively and thumping dominant tackles he usually produces at club level hasn’t been able to fully transfer to national side yet and I’m not sure if that’s cuz of a difference in defensive style or what
@robertsmithson4802
@robertsmithson4802 3 жыл бұрын
@@calex7763Fair enough, I need to find a way to watch the pro14 games and not just highlights. I think with the defence it's clearly a system issue more than a personnel one, but Brex's profile doesn't help. He did make some big hits vs Wales, but I don't think he's quick/agile enough over the first 2-3 metres for an international 13. It might just be a post-quarantine fitness issue since he used to play 7s so you'd assume that would be a strength, or maybe it's just the difference between a guy in his early 20s (when he played 7s for Argentina) vs one who's almost 29 now. Zanon for example is smaller (I think; he certainly -looks- less muscular than Brex) but he seems to have greater speed, especially when moving laterally and not just forwards towards a target. But I'll defer to your opinion here since I'm guessing you've seen much more if him for Benetton than I have.

He’s also not an international 13 for me either, I’d like to see him 12 again like he did vs France, as he can play a distributor role pretty nicely due to his lack of attacking flair Not the best highlights but a 1min video of him when he got a new contract a few years back, which shows the type of tackles he usually does kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqPdpICun7B4d5I

@@calex7763 I've been wondering about Ruzza, I can't imagine why Smith prefers Lazzaroni. I'd pick Mbanda too - he's made some strong contributions off the bench and seems much more decisive and confident than pre-covid - but maybe him at 7 and Meyer at 8. I'd love to see what Meyer could do off the back of the scrum with the space to build up a head of steam. I think the strongest side Italy have put out recently was vs Scotland at the Autumn Nations cup (including Steyn, Polledri and Minozzi), but those were among Garbisi and Varney's first caps, so they were still getting used to the pace of play. If they had that exact 23 available this weekend I think they'd at least be competitive. Your team is about as good as it gets in the meantime.

@@calex7763 it's at least 4 years that "the pro14 teams are improving just unlucky with injuries" and that we can only improve... I'm starting to doubt that we ever will catch up, especially if we don't play any games we can actually win. Like squidge said, we fall apart at the first mistake; how are our players supposed to keep it together if they never get results?
@calex7763
@calex7763 3 жыл бұрын
@@buscanvil2022 well the pro14 sides are, the six nations 2019 championship was pretty good as we were very competitive, I think that’s down to Conor being with the players for a long time but also due to the fact Benetton had a brilliant season that year 18/19. Benetton can easily get back to their best, the only reason they haven’t done is injuries and covid crises which led to many loses which have led to no confidence. If we get the club sides having more confidence (like we did in 18/19 season) we can do better, and I’m almost sure benetton will get back to high heights very soon, they just need a reset with new season. I know it’s super tough, but I’m just giving Franco smith more time to implement his new strategies

What pressure is on wales going to France? Or have you forgotten that pre tournament according to some that wales were tipped to potentially be fighting it out with Italy for wooden spoon due to this transitional period they’re in with new management and recent results... they’ve since gone on to win triple crown 1game away from grand slam. Pressure is on France as obvious favourites.. even if wales lose ? The squad debrief post tournament will still be one full of more positives than negatives with a bit of silverware in the cupboard and welsh public content wales look to be on the right track once again... maybe they’ll use that jam you keep going on about as lube to butt fk all the doubters who have criticised wales at every opportunity 🤫🍓🍓😂😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇫🇷

Question for the Italians - do you think Marzio Innocenti will make a difference? I know pretty much everyone was unhappy with Gavazzi but it seems like Innocenti's ideas (growing the game in the south, a draft system for the Top10), while interesting, are more medium-long term and might not necessarily help the Azzurri become more competitive this year or next...
@lp6111
@lp6111 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I think he will create some change for sure. The medium long term stuff is great because its always important to get that down to ensure long term success not just over one cycle. He fired Ascione and had him replaced. Ascione was the head of technical staff for the Italian rugby federation. This may mean that the technical staff will be changed and for sure there will be big changes at academy level in Italy. I think of Innocenti gets the long term stuff on point that could really change a lot for Italy. In the short term I think the problems are manageable, Italy has a great generation of rugby players at hand they just need to get some competent coaches and technical staff instead of constantly hiring old players assuming they will do a good job.
@hungryocelot4760
@hungryocelot4760 3 жыл бұрын
You mentioning the election is so cool. The management of the federation is one of the many (sadly) big problems in the italian movement. Gavazzi and Dondi got a lot wrong in their tenure as presidents and Innocenti's ideas sure are mid/long term, but is a big step forward in my opinion.

@@lp6111 I generally agree that it's the right course of action - do you think expanding the game in the south is possible? I did some digging a few weeks ago and by my reckoning the only international player from south of Rome in recent years was Licata (whatever happened to him by the way? He was excellent last year...). I do really hope they get some better coaching in place though, as there's clearly enough talent at u20 level, they just always seem to stall once they break into the national team (see almost every scrum half and centre they've picked since 2013)...
@lp6111
@lp6111 3 жыл бұрын
@@robertsmithson4802 I agree a lot of players have stalled but some did break through like campagnaro Minozzi Negri and polledri. This u20 is the strongest ever with Italy not coming last in the u20 6N for a couple years and beating England when they were in u18s. As far as expansion to the south I think it’s possible. The other sports that compete with rugby like basketball and volleyball are also less big in the south. I think that there could be a chance to expand at least into some of the bigger cities. The issue at the moment is that there’s no good teams and facilities in the south. A talented kid growing up in Sicily will not be able to find a club nearby that matches his skill level and would only be able to go to the fir academy at 18/19. This means that in their teen years these guys are playing subpar competition with mediocre coaching. In football for example such a thing isn’t a problem because a prodigy will be picked up at 14 to go to a clubs academy in the north cause the money is there for that. Canna is also from the south actually. Licata is a great player I also really think he’s very promising sadly he’s missed most of the season due to injury like too many other Italians.

@@lp6111 That's interesting about Volleyball and Basketball not being as present in the south to 'compete' with rugby. It can't be a coincidence that lock has always been Italy's weakest position since all the talent disappears elsewhere (can you imagine how good a lineout operator someone like Zaytsev would be?).

Wales has rich history of being victorious over the centuries. If their Ancient History wasn't suppressed by the establishment, this would be more widely known. Such as the Welsh repelling Julius Caesar's legions or the great line of battle tested Kings, including King Arthur of Glamorgan and Gwent, yes King Arthur was real and is Welsh.
