I actually didn't catch that and didn't understand how it could charge to 100% in only 5 days. From 0%, you'd be charging this forever, which makes sense. At 250 kwh of battery, it's the equivalent of 18.5 Tesla powerwalls!!! No way you're charging that in 5 days from 110V. Btw, as much as this car is only for those with deep pockets, imagine having 18.5 Tesla powerwalls worth of storage during a power outage. If you run just the essentials, you could power your house for 3 weeks. Imagine pairing that with solar panels? It's actually a great option to have. Again, of course, you'd have to have super deep pockets to buy this, and there's no way this could be your daily driver, so you'd have to have another car too!

This plug (120V, 15A, not ideal) provides up to 1800 watts. A fixed 240V 40A charger (a better option) provides 9600 watts. A public fast charger can provide up to 350,000 watts. That's more than 194 times faster than small charger featured in the video. (Although the circuit breaker for the larger home charger is rated for 50 amps, this 50 amps must be at least 125% of the load, per NEC 625.41)

He could just get a 220 outlet put in his garage without too much cost. Every home in the US should already receive 220 from the mains. So you'd just need an extra breaker and then have it wired to a plug placed in a location you want. A lot of panels are located in the garage as well if the garage is attached. So the cost shouldn't be that bad for someone who can afford a 80k EV.
@eduardosanchez7827
@eduardosanchez7827 Жыл бұрын
@@antonisautos8704 a standard 220V outlet will be only twice as fast. To fully charge that kind of EV your typical house won’t be able to handle it in a reasonable time. Most houses have been designed to consume anywhere from 10 to 20 KVA, you need at least an extra 50 KVA transformer just to charge it overnight. That means you have to triple the whole power grid if you want every house to have a single EV.
@antonisautos8704
@antonisautos8704 Жыл бұрын
@Eduardo Sánchez peoples home service is rated in amps. Most homes have a 100 amp panel. But you can upgrade your service to 200 amp. But its pretty expensive as the panel will have to either be changed or a new one added. Standard 110 outlets in the garage provide 15 amps, or 20 depending on the home. Meaning around 1.5 to 2KWh of charging. Installing a 40 amp 220V outlet (similar to electric dryers outlets here in the US) would yield closer to 8KWh of charging. Which is quadruple the rate of that 110V 15A outlet. No one is really going to install a DC fast charger at their home. That's what charging stations are for. But a 40A 220V outlet will charge quickly enough for nearly all use cases.

And it's a very expensive car to struggle that much alrlthough I'm sure things will improve, buy so will gas cars. Both are improving. And getting worse in some ways. Both gas and electricity are so complicated that they have issues in different ways. Only an idiot charges an EV using 110V. If you can afford a Hummer EV then you can afford to install a 240V 50 amp circuit in your house and install a $500+ LEVEL-2 charger that are widely available at Amazon. At 16 miles per hour of LEVEL-2 charging your Hummer would recoup 160 miles in 10 hours (overnight) or 384 miles per day (actually 355 because that is the limit of the Hummer). For traveling there is DC-CHARGING and that takes 30 minutes or so to charge to 80% or 100 miles in 10 minutes. You do NOT charge more than 80% on DC-CHARGERS because the speed of charging slows down DRAMATICALLY after 80% and you end up paying a LOT OF MONEY for that extra 20%. Also, EV owners don't let the battery go down to 0 ... nor charge to 100%. You should plug it EVERY TIME YOU ARE AT HOME and ONLY allow it to charge to 90%. If you charge your battery to 100% all the time then the battery starts developing cracks that will diminish it's longevity. But I am sure that if you went out and bought the most ridiculous EV in the market you DID SOME FKING RESEARCH ... RIGHT???

I knew this was going to happen when some idiot thought of making a battery powered Hummer. Believe it or not they're planning on making battery-powered diesel trucks. Can you imagine it'll take a year to charge the battery. Wait till you go to one of those charging stations to see what it cost you to charge it. Like a dollar a mile. But on the positive side you're trying to charge it in the snow. The temperature of the battery has to get above 32° before the battery even starts to charge. So when you plugged it in your basically turning on the electric heaters in the battery. That 115-volt is basically to keep your battery from freezing and exploding. When the battery gets cold it will turn on the heaters and run down the battery. But once the battery is dead it won't be able to turn on the heaters and the battery will freeze and burst.

Slow charging is slow. Got it. On the other hand, most EVs (not trucks) will charge at about 3 to 4 mph from that outlet, and that’s enough to recover most people’s daily commute overnight. We’ve put 30,000 miles on a Leaf this way. I don’t recommend it, but it can work.

The loading, that's exactly the problem. You no longer drive to the gas station and are back on the road after 5-10 minutes. You are looking for a FREE & fast charging station? None available. You don't have a charging station at home? You take the socket and risk to burn down your house. Why? Your home grid is not normally designed to draw that much power for that long. The cables get warm and warmer... The main problem with EV is the infrastructure. Imagine the chaos when the EV share is 33%. In the city it will be really entertaining.

Several studies from widely varying sources confirm this. 2) The grid is not 100% coal or natural gas. 3) Coal is disappearing fast, because it is the most expensive power source. Within a decade it will be virtually gone, forever. 4) California uses no coal power at all. That's a lot of EVs running without coal. They're over 30% wind and solar and that's growing fast. 5) Find some new FUD. That old stuff is getting rancid.

@@mattpacktree92 Actually, I did NOT leave out the mining process. The studies I referred to ALL include the mining. There are dozens of studies on the subject. The one that shows ICE cars having lower emissions, conveniently leaves out much of the long fossil fuel supply chain, and the very high energy cost of oil transport and refining. The more factors a study includes, the bigger the advantage that EVs have. You're also mistaken about California. In September of 2022, there was a historic, record breaking statewide heat wave. But due to the large increase in solar power generation and battery storage added to the grid in the past few years, there were NO ROLLING BLACKOUTS. And there have been none since then. As for environmental damage, if you made a chart showing the damage from oil extraction, refining and transport, and also showing the damage from mining for EVs, the gap would be so large, with the oil numbers at the top of the chart, the EV numbers would be so low you couldn't see them. That's how much more the damage is from fossil fuels. These are old stale, and false propaganda talking points. @wojciechmuras553
@wojciechmuras553 Жыл бұрын
@@teej5619 Worth noting though, the heater losses are mostly in city driving, where you do a few miles, get out, let the car cool down, then get back in heat it up, drive a few miles... That's where the heater can REALLY eat up the battery. But it's the city, you're not doing many miles anyway, range isn't that important. On the highway, where you NEED the range, the heater doesn't take up nearly as much energy. Think about how it is in a combustion car - you crank the heat to high for the first 15-20 minutes, but once the interior has warmed up, sustaining the temperature doesn't take much energy at all. When driving an EV, you just let the car do the warm up while it's plugged in and charging, and then the battery only has to sustain the interior temperature. Of course, it'll still take some of your range away, but even in harsh, freezing conditions, you'll still do ~70-75% of what you normally would in the summer - especially since fast charging on the road heats up the battery, so part of that battery loss is negated.

How can, driving something that takes over 120hours to charge and that can be discharged in one day of driving, be good for the environment? This makes no sense at all. It is obscene, ugly and sad. Just like the cars and truck made in the US in the past 50+ years. It feels like to only reason car manufacturers hire engineers is because that’s what they heard the German and Italian brands do also.
