@dfpguitar
@dfpguitar Ай бұрын
No they couldn't. They can't realistically expect staff to be trained in and remember the appearance of every banned customer. Plus the staff , even licensed security , cannot use any significant amount of force. The regular store staff cannot use any at all because of liability for injuries to either party. The store staff also have no motivation because they are actually told not to intervene because of this risk and will definitely not get paid extra for risking their own safety. Hiring separate security is a huge additional expense and a lot of the time the company decides it's not worth it. And even when security guards are present, they can't do anything till the suspects start stealing and even then cannot be excessively forceful.

@@johngreen8693and how many tens of thousands of pounds additional expense will that cost the retailer? Plus, they are not 100% accurate. If one or two innocent people are forcibly ejected from the premises by security then that could later cost the retailer multiple times the financial loss again in law suits and people like you giving out about big brother gone rogue on comment sections like this. Yes, the law needs to be less liberal and allow the police to be more aggressive in implementing it. But do you really want some of your liberties restricted for your own protection? Because it's always a 100% guarantee that regularly innocent people will get accused or convicted. It's always happened before. But right now, it is a complete shit show. It's almost impossible to ride a good bike or e-bike instead of taking a car or public transport and leave it parked up in a public space all day before it eventually gets stolen. There is very little shame in openly being a criminal these days and minimal consequences to be faced.
@johngreen8693
@johngreen8693 Ай бұрын
@@tconnolly9820 I understand and agree that we need to protect our liberties, however, crime is rising and it's often the same repeaters. There are so many cameras nowadays (streets, stores, pubs, towns, car parks, houses) that it wouldn't make much difference.

She should be banned by the store because it makes any subsequent crime more serious - if she returns and pickpockets or assaults someone (such as while trying to escape), it’s not just theft, it’s burglary (because she’s committed theft/assault while a trespasser). Don’t expect miracles from the courts and police but it increases the chance of the latter taking it more seriously and the former setting a higher punishment.

I thought stores in the U.K. had cameras as we do here in America . Following the U.K.’s early use of closed circuit cameras in the streets, chain grocery stores and large discount stores like Walmart in America all have cameras in stores and store parking lots - even in my Midwestern college town of about 100,000 people. Street cameras -and even freeway cameras are also becoming more and more common here “across the pond” in the U.S. Why in the world don’t Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Marks and Spencer have closed circuit video cameras?!!!And when a shoplifter or person assaulting/pestering, robbing or attempting to rob a customer or the store is caught on camera in America, at the very least that offender is permanently trespassed from returning to the store. Neil, are there independent grocery stores, perhaps smaller than a large supermarket, or even a chain grocery store that will deliver your groceries? That’s got to be cheaper than replacing a cell phone. We’ve been to London, though it was years ago - 1985, and at least in the areas we were in from Heathrow, on the Tube, in Paddington Station, Knightsbridge and Harrod’s to Trafalger Square and Piccadilly Circus and the Haymarket, we felt much safer than we would in many larger American cities or on an earlier trip to Rome, where pickpocketing was and likely still is rampant. I know what an enormous city London is, but still, it’s sad in a truly remarkable city like London that it’s impossible to feel safe while doing something as ordinary and basic as shopping for groceries. I’m so sorry, Neil, you had to experience this - and twice! How maddening! And how sad for all the good people in a great city that.survived the horrors of World War II to come to this!

At the door outside store, there was an employee telling everyone who entered to please be careful with their purse and other items because there had been someone in the store the day before stealing women’s purses and other valuables. He apologized for this happening, and this was a way for them to perhaps curb the thefts. Perhaps Sainsbury could have an employee at the door cautioning the customers coming into the store that there is a known pickpocket frequenting their store. Explain to the customers that this is a self-help measure they are forced to adopt because the police would or could do nothing to help.

Trespass in the UK is complicated. Mostly its a 'civil' matter so the cops don't get involved. Just the opposite in the USA. Say Mr sainsbury wants a person removed (trespassed)...the cops turn up and drag 'em out. If they wont go peacefully they get charged. AS IT SHOULD BE!! If theft here is no longer "a crime" I wont bother taking me wallet next time!!

Sainsbury’s need to ban anyone from the store they suspect of pickpocketing. They should also have very overt security following anyone suspicious. That at least would drive these cretins back onto the street. This unfortunately is what happens when police are more concerned with words & thoughts than criminal deeds.

Having worked until recently in a supermarket we were told just to let them go. It's really annoying and insulting to watch thieves stealing and just walking out. I was very willing to stop them but I was not allowed to. I know it's stupid of me but I felt personally violated by their utter contempt of me as they smirked and walked out.
