I've always wanted starbound to be perfect. I've enjoyed playing it a ton in the past and I do tend to come back to it when I feel like modding it again, but it just has some weird kinks that unfortunately got worse over the updates -- eventually leading to the devs abandoning a fantastic idea at a mediocre execution. Glad you're giving it a go! You'll definitely enjoy it from a fresh perspective.

For anyone wondering, i'll explain a bit below. Starbound was largely developed on unpaid labor with(though i admittedly cant find where i heard it) little-to-zero communication. When someone asked if they would get a contract, they were told such a thing was never promised, in part causing a revolving door of developers, and hence some of the issues listed before. The videos at 0:24 by RoboKast and progress explain the whole thing far better than I can.

Oh boy, just started this video. Man, Starbound was just one trainwreck after another, so many bad decisions, so many missed opportunities. At least the modding community helped, I guess. I like that you can kinda tell just playing the game that Chucklefish was getting bored or tired or something, as the early story dungeons felt more hand-crafted and the later ones were like "here's part of a castle we made in about 30 minutes, just fight stuff until you win" or the last "dungeon" being "dig straight down for a bit, then shoot the weak point until it dies", all while progressing through the game gets you fewer and fewer hand-crafted cutscenes, and the Novakid race was just slapped on haphazardly so people don't get as mad. I think my biggest complaint of all that still rustles my jimmies is them unifying the plot down to "Earth blows up for the 9380753896th time in sci-fi because ??? and also 99.9999% of the human race is there at that specific time because ??? and you're the only survivor OF Earth's attack because ???" as that's a way overdone plot and it means we lose out on the race-specific intros and race-specific ship AIs.

The music in this game is genuinely so good.
@plantszaza9002Күн бұрын
From my experience of playing Starbound: The good: -Music is great. -Oddly chill experience compared to Terraria. You rarely have moments where 10 enemies are constantly chasing you. -You can build NPC settlement and eventually have an infinite amount of NPCs walking around. -The universe is shared among all characters you created. So your new character will be able to find the planet and everything your other character built. The bad: -The story is meh. -The game is unoptimized. -Every race starts with the same intro and same story, ultimately their only difference is their appearance and their quote when inspecting items. -You will start to become bored spending time exploring dozens of the same type of planets. -Underwater exploration is the worst. -Lava will kill you in 3 seconds if you're submerged in it, no way to negate it. -At the bottom of every planet (except the moon) is the infinity lava layer and if your Survival characters fall into it, say goodbye to all the items you dropped. -Even with end-game gears, You can still die to fall damage. This is where the modding community hard carries the game. They do everything from completely fixing the game's problem to adding an entirely new race with furniture, NPC settlements, encounters, items, and whole new quest lines.

My first character was a novakid and the lore made for her was that she was a bounty hunter that ended up on the broken down ship of a captain and his robot (my friends), so the whole goal was to repair the ship and find ourselves our own space station to settle. I even built the small ship of hers into a smuggler's den and built her a warehouse base on a desert planet. Good times!

There's so many differences from Terraria to Starbound, it's kinda of unfair to compare them. Some other comment mentioned that Starbound is more similar to Minecraft, and there's some merit to that. You can kinda ignore the story, there's too much dialogue for me, and around the midpoint I stopped caring. But HOOOOLYYYYY there's so many cool things in the game as well! I think you should give the game a chance, since you're not the Terraria player that only cares for progression, this game can be a lot of fun if you can keep the positive attitude you've shown in this video. Here's a few tips and differences from Terraria, some repeated from other's comments: - You can also remove background blocks with the right click (and they're actual blocks, not walls like in Terraria) - Check every button on the GUI at least once, don't be like me that spent more time than I should without upgrading the Matter Manipulator - You're playing on a difficulty akin to Mediumcore in Terraria, dropping some items on death. On easy, you only lose money, like in Softcore, so you can change that if you're feeling discouraged by dying a lot at the start. Some other things change as well, but you can self-impose those things off if your Gamer Pride :tm: is too strong. (the last tip actually has some spoilers, so I'll save it for a later video)

as someone who loves BOTH terraria and starbound, it really helps if you try to not think about it as just 'terraria in space', as plenty of others have said. i do also agree with some other people that while its good to have a vanilla run first - just to get your bearings - theres a mod that essentially reworks starbound to be much more enjoyable. is it a good thing that you have to entirely recode the game to enjoy it? no. i agree there at least. but at the same time, you can tell theres a LOT of love in the mod. it takes what starbound put down and polishes it up well, and fixes a lot of tiny little problems - it also really extends the longevity of the playthrough, because wow, is it easy to accidentally speedrun vanilla starbound (as i did that, completely unintentionally). it also mixes with vanilla really seemlessly - even though i played the whole thing, when i downloaded Frackin' Universe, it wasn't that obstructive. it reworks how you learn crafting stuff, which is the largest change, but its a welcome one, honestly. it does also fix the repetitive planet generation, and if you get another mod (more planet info) it can make finding ore stuff a lot easier, since you dont just have to gamble to see if theres a resource you need on a planet (which, for me, cuts down a visit to the wiki). Uh.. Hm... im rambling. I know this is basically a mod recommendation but its in good spirit, like recommending thorium if you like baseline terraria and want something new thats not uber intrusive like calamity. A vanilla + mod, if you will. BUT ANYWAY, yes, you should finish this run, its been so long since ive seen someone play starbound that wasnt completely boiling it down to how its just a terraria clone - man at least you gave it a chance! and yeah, you dont need to care about the plot, like, most of my 400 hours has just been me building my base and upgrading gear with some sidequests sprinkled in. (mainly because im a completionist with games i like, but still) TLDR: yes, please play more, and if you enjoy the game, I recommend Frackin' Universe (and more planet info) on a second playthrough. (itll wreck vanilla started playthroughs usually for context.)

Basically the story is just a means to force you to explore and interact with every race, as long as you keep exploring and when you find people try to do quests and recruit them. I always called the plot lady "Space Grandma" and just vaguely pay attention to which race she wants you to interact with next. also bosses can be really tough, and upgrades to your ship and "mount" are important and awesome. for some vague advice, find a way to cheese the penguin. he helps you upgrade one of the coolest things in the game but that upgrade process can be very slow. the game also doesnt really tell you much about the upgrade process, if i remember correctly you want to look for the "not planet or moon levels"

Fun fact: later in the game you can craft capture pods and then capture pretty much ANY creature you come across, making you the Pokemon Master

Having dumped hundreds of hours into starbound with close friends, it's fun for extended playthroughs after the end game with building cities and pvp against each other. The building is not nearly as intricate as terraria can get, but it's nice to build outposts on all sorts of planets. As a standalone single player experience from the start to end of the story, it definitely has it's shortcomings though.

Starbound was always one of my staple games over the years. Its always been fun and had great building and combat all things considered. Just unfortunate how its development went after launch.

I hope you do continue playing starbound cause it actually is really good and watching this kind of made me want to replay the game again for like the 3rd or 4th time. the story is really mid but the game is really fun has some great bosses (the one you thought was more of a mini boss fyi) and really cool mechanics that you should be able to unlock now that your at the hub world.

I played Starbound well before Terraria. We were looking for a coop game and Starbound came up, so we tried, and had a lot of fun with it. We explored, fought, dug, mined stuff, and started to build a shelter, then a manor, then a castle, ofc all on top / around of each other. :D A year or two later we wanted to play something similar, so I looked and found Terraria. We played that too, and had very similar experience as we had with Starbound. The progression is a bit different I guess, and you have the one world instead of many (which is not sure a good or a bad thing, regarding that I wanted to explore everything and it's basically impossible in Starbound, well after a while things seem to be repeating). Anyways, later I heard about the drama around Starbound, but our experience was positive with it and I guess you have to be really into the nitty-gritty of the two games, to see differences, that a more casual player won't really recognize or care about. Good video, I think it would be good if you continued with Starbound, you seemed to enjoy it. :) Cheers!

Its devs are headed by a massive transphobe and sex creep, and scammed fans for free work on the game's content. Not wild lmao's fault for not knowing, but don't get the game.

If you know the history of this game, then you'd know that this game USED to be Terraria in space. But because Finn Brice is such a scum, calling the Starbound of today a Terraria in space without modding would be an insult to Terraria.

This was the first game I played when I started computer gaming. I've been here since the start and I hope you continue playing. Also btw I do hope they make a second Starbound, the game has unfortunately had a bad rep because of the lack of diversity within items and such, as well as the development team being hounded by terrible superiors. If you want to play it modded Frackin' Universe is a great option. Thanks for giving this game some love in 5 years!

I remember enjoying this game alot. Built a few settlements and beat the two bosses that were in the game. I stoped because one day the game decided to teleport me all the way to 0,0. millions of coordinates away from all my homes, i knew the direction it was in because it showed me a line, but after about an hour of dragging the map i gave up.

Please continue 🙏 Starbound is my favourite game. I played terraria about 300 hours (beat moonlord in master mode). Then I tried starbound and I love it much more than terraria. I spent more than 1000 hrs in this beautiful game. I payed vanilla about 500 hrs. Then I added mod Frackin Universe. This mod blown my mind!!! There are so many interesting things and mechanics. There are still many things to explore. With FU starbound is much better. I still play starbound and love this game❤

I've played both game quite a bit, and they're both good in their own ways Starbound to me is an exploration game more than a fighting game, while terraria is much more combat focused I would build your inventors table and such on your ship so it's easy to access, and would love to see more of this Edit: I play casual mode and have mods install to increase that exploration vibe I enjoy out of the game. I feel like base game is lacking in a lot of ways

Yo he actually played it! Oh my God! I love Starbound so so SOOO much! Edit: Yes, please keep playing this. There are so many mods to make this game whatever you want it to be. I use a mod that removes the story so I can just play and fight bosses. There's also "Fracking Universe" which is a REALLY big mod and something I recommend later when you have enough of experience with Starbound since it's like a new game+ with tons of cool new quests and content.
