The fact that it was only 5 episodes and they wanted to cover all the way up to the Dark Tournament arc, was the biggest flaw. There were a billion arcs in between and they had to skip so much story that none of the character interactions held any weight at all in the live action. Genkai was introduced and killed (DISRESPECTFULLY OFF SCREEN) in only one episode where if you were a casual fan or a new watcher, you wouldn't give a shit about Genkai, but she had a HUGE role in Yusuke's development. The Spirit Orb was also a very important part of Yusuke's strength and it took several scenes to show you how much inheriting the orb was gonna fuck you up and how it gave Yusuke the necessary power boost to finally compete with Toguro's level, where in the Live Action it was treated like it was a handshake. I love everything else. If I had to give it a constructive critique, I wish it was set in the 90s. Everyone's hairstyle would have made a ton of sense and it would have been such a vibe. Who wouldn't want to watch a modern interpretation of 90s Japan with martial arts and yokai and delinquent pompadours flying everywhere?

I watched the anime semi-regularly back in like, the early 2000s when it was on Cartoon Network. I never rewatched it, so I figured this would be a good refresher. And the best way I can describe the live action is that, in my own recollection of the anime, it's the Sparknotes version of the anime. All the broad strokes of character development are there, all the main story points are there. They just took a novel and cut it down to a pamphlet. That's not to say it's bad, it's just VERY condensed. If you like it, watch the anime (or read the mangas) and you'll see all the story beats actually in their full glory.

Kurama and Hiei didn't get much development. They also skipped the St. beast arc which was one of the BEST arcs in YYH.

Yusuke’s long hair transformation was at the end of the Chapter Black/Sensui arc, not when he was up against Toguro. I liked that this live action wasn’t word-for-world the same. In fact, some of the blending of storylines allowed for surprises I actually really liked… Like it being Elder Toguro kidnapping Keiko instead of Hiei. As someone who’s read the manga a number of times & watched the anime well over 100 times at this point, I didn’t question Hiei kidnapping Keiko because that’s how it went down. But having the Toguro storyline overlapping with he artifacts to an extent allowed for twists like that. I’m honestly not mad at this live action- and oh man was I freakin nervous about it.

Love all your points. Especially the part with Toguro and the OJ. But I want to add that they didn't really put emphasis on the remorse part of Toguro's character because during the Genkai hell scene, he was still pretty cold. And that was the point they wanted to put out. I am absolutely glad they didn't go into Dark Tournament mode because that was a thing back then (Dragonball and Rurorouni Kenshin also did it) but, to me, would be really out of place in live action. They could prolong the battles (maybe?) in order to place more focus on each main character. But the flow was okay for me. What I was anticipating at the end was the slight explanation that the reason why Toguro was defeated even at 100% strength (because they DID emphasize his ability to regulate his power during fights and his talent to measure an opponent's abilities) was because Yusuke was able to release a Rei Gan at 110% which Toguro was still able to cancel out at the cost of his life. Still, that moment gave me chills.

I enjoyed your review of the live action and agree! It's not the best one out there - that's still Rurouni Kenshin for me - but it did pretty damn well with the time given and the meshing of story. I enjoyed the desperation of the fights by breaking them up like that and I enjoyed the bonding with Keiko and Yukina. Sakyo's domination as the main villain here was pretty epic - I loved seeing more of him here and his gambling den was both sick and creepy as hell! Also, Elder Toguro was brilliantly terrifying! I also was completely riveted in how they organized the preliminary fights with possessed kid and Gouki. Yes, this was different, but it was still gritty, dangerous, and made me root for my boys just as much as the anime (while wanting to get more of the villains). xD

@GuitarGuyNick11 ай бұрын
another thing if you noticed in the anime they say that yuske has a limit to his spirit gun. like that really added tension in the end fights. he had a limit to how much he could do it per day. this was missed out in the live action

Honestly, I'm thinking there is a very real chance tht we are on ther verge of a live action anime renaissance, with them flooding out like fantasy series did after the success of Game of Thrones. That doesn't necessarily mean they will all be good/quality, but it should be a fun ride at least :D

I haven't watched the video yet, but YYH is the best Anime of all time. Literally the cool uncle of Shonen. With DBZ being the Dad, and OP, Bleach, and Naruto being the sons/nephews.

Personally I found it OKAYish. Gotta admit the CGI was pretty good and the fight choreography was probably my favourite part of it. Casting wise is where I find it too divisive for me. The Toguro brothers did an awesome job with what they had to be honest, and Kuwabara was also a lot more loveable here, but I kinda find Yusuke's actor lacking emotion. I don't blame the actor, more so the direction he was given, but just referencing that one scene with Toguro begging the youkai not to kill his friend and compare it to when Yusuke does it to Toguro - it just feels kinda stale and he just looks more like mildly annoyed, rather than being desperate to save his friends (just an opinion though). The rushed pacing also hurts Toguro's character, but overall I'd still say it's not bad, but I just wish Netflix gave them more episodes, and it probably could've been great

I just don't know why they had to cram the Dark Tournament stuff into this 1st season! Like, did they expect that this is gonna be a 1 and done season and so they wanted to do those fights? But if they do get a 2nd season, then what? They CAN NOT do Dark Torunament proper now that they killed...basically half of the characters that made that ark interesting. Or are they gonna try and do it, but with Sensui in place of Sakyo? Like he's gonna use the tourny as a way to try and reopen the gate since Sakyo failed here?
@tigistzalka10 ай бұрын
15:15 maybe they want to use that much later with sensui? I predict them combining the last 2 tournaments into one or smt. i just want to see our demon pals, demon yusuke meating grand papi and kuwabara's sis T-T

I’m an avid YYH fan. I watched the dubbed anime when it first aired State side then read the whole manga. I watched Cowboy Bebop live action and was impressed with the 2 episodes I caught because they displayed the attitude of CB that I love although the story is shown differently. After your review, I may watch it. At least it’s short, should be painless haha and my fave character is Kuwabara too
@quhan766410 ай бұрын
It was not the worst from what I've heard in fact it was better, the downside it's just 5 episode, so they just cramp in everything. Just imagine if was more than 5, it could have been epic. What the hell Netflix.

One thing that really stood out to me was that I felt they really captured the retro Japan vibe, kinda like how stranger things did it. I loved it, and I felt like the folks in charge really understood and respected the source material. There was a lot that I wished made it in, but I hope it does well enough to get more cause I want more. Also funny that you mentioned the Parasyte live actually cause I was looking at the YYH live action and thinking MAN I'd love it Parasyte was done by this team.

Ngl I was waiting on somebody in the community to review it before I watched it and as soon as you gave it the green light, I watched the first episode. Off rip I see the allure and charm of the show. It's got real deal action movie fight scenes and choreography reminiscent of Jackie Chan style movies. They use the full environment during the scrap and don't sell us short with those fights. The scene where he uses the electric wire to wrap the possessed dude up and then the box on the wall to keep bashing him in the head also picks up on one of Yusuke's greatest elements-his ability to figure shit out on the fly using whatever is around to get the job done. Yeah, ok it's not a carbon copy, but maybe for its own benefit because what it is is enjoyable. Having fun with it.

i never read or watched Yu Yu Hakusho before and honestly i really like this live action. Considering how good the fight scene & CGI are i think they made the right decision in choosing to have only 5 episodes. I honestly can't wait for season 2
@aeonise10 ай бұрын
The show, viewed purely on its own merits, is fine. The problem is they just speed-ran 60% of the source material in 5 episodes. If they try to slow it down to avoid running out in a S2 or S3, it may end up feeling kind of weird.

I watched the Yuu Yuu Hakusho anime in Japanese audio so i am good i don't see myself reading the manga or watching the live action i am not a massive fan of Yuu Yuu Hakusho i do like it but it's not a epic masterpiece for me also this is a minor thing but i kinda want to see a spin off series of Yuu Yuu Hakusho of Yuusuke being married to Botan this was one of the anime extras of Yuu Yuu Hakusho it was fun Yuusuke just waking up only to find out he is now married to Botan but it was very short but it was laid back and funny

The anime also cut out a lot of the stuff from earlier manga chapters. In the first episode, it was a car that nearly hit the kid, and the issue was that he just went into the road for his ball and the driver wasn't paying full attention. Yusuke's death in the Live action was a lot more brutal. Like one could see it going either way in the anime, but when you see him get ran over by the truck in the Live Action, you know that he had little to no chance of surviving that. Yusuke is only dead for 5 episodes iirc. Despite how much the live action cuts early on, I think that was one of the better examples. Episode 1 may have lead to Yusuke getting his life back in a different way, but I really liked how they handled the scene where Keiko is reminiscing with Atsuko about Yusuke and feeling guilty about her last words to him. And the fight against the possessed student was also handled quite well imo. Episode 2 also showed promise. The fight against Goki was well executed and the handling of Kurama using the mirror was also farily well done, though I prefer how the anime did it. All in all, if the rest of the season was as good as the first two episodes, then YYH LA would have been great, but from episode 3 onward the pacing falls apart. It ultimately comes down to it trying to rush to what they thought was the best part of the anime, but with none of the buildup and character development that lead up to it in the anime. Highlights from the later episodes for me were most of the times when Elder Toguro was on screen. He's quite different from his anime counterpart, but the performance was great and his goofy behavior perfectly matches his powers. If I were trying to adapt the series, I would have gone up to end up the Saint Beast arc or the first Toguro fight. For a climax to a season, Saint Beast would probably work better, since the stakes would be quite high then, while the Toguro fight had lower stakes. On the other hand, the Toguro fight could work as a way to tease the Dark Tournament. Either way, if they handled it well it could work whether there was a season 2 or not. But as for how the Live action handled it imo, it gave no room for a proper Season 2 unless they skip straight to Chapter Black. So it ends up feeling rushed and unfortunately a bit incomplete as well. And given that live action adaptions already have been known to be cursed, I am not sure it will actually get a season 2. I guess they wanted to include a bunch of their favorite moments with the knowledge that a season 2 won't be greenlit, but in the end I think it's the kind of thing that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'd rather a really good season 1 that could be taken on it's own or that leaves room for a season 2 that may or may not come out, than one that is rushed, incomplete and leaves no room for a season 2 that is less likely to come out.

In the manga: it was a spur of the moment, a kid wasn’t being careful and tried ti chase his ball into the streets. A car was recklessly speeding down the road, distracted or sake of being a “speed-devil” and didn’t see the boy until it was too late. Yusuke had already seen the boy playing with the ball and warned him about the streets, then the car came and he noticed it and the boy. He was able to react before anyone else…..to my memory of the manga.

It wasn’t bad, and I really enjoyed the action and acting. But holy hell, cutting out so many arcs is a mistake. The arcs before the Dark Tournament is there to build the relationship between the characters and the stakes.
