GET THE AUDIOBOOKS! Honestly, the audiobooks are performed- not read- PERFORMED by James Masters! I had no idea who that actor was before being laid up in the hospital when a friend sent me the first few audiobooks. I was hooked. I even went to a svi Fi convention just to tell Masters how much I appreciate and enjoy his performances in this series. He was thrilled to hear from a Dresden fan- I guess everyone else was there for his Buffy The Vampire Slayer role. Anyway, my highest possible recommendation for the audiobooks- you'll experience the novels you've already read in a whole new light- and with a lot more maturity, angst and anger than the printed words might imply. Like us, James Masters is a fan.

One of Harry's greatest strengths is his friends. The Dresden Files is definitely an ensemble story; Butcher loves to reuse characters, and minor ones grow and develop alongside Harry. An example: you meet Waldo Butters in Grave Peril, but he really comes into his own during Dead Beat. The Alphas that you met in Fool Moon also continue to grow and evolve over many books. And Michael! He is central to so much of what happens in the future of the series. So glad to hear that you're going to keep going with it.

Also, I had a feeling you would love Michael. He is, hands down, one of the best "paladin" characters I've ever read in fiction, and the way that Butcher handles faith continues to be this respectful and nuanced throughout the series. He's one of the few fantasy authors who is able to write people and entities that are supposed to be unambiguous "good guys" who are both ACTUALLY good, are very strong and powerful, and yet are also still nuanced, complex, and interesting. And the existance of these "good" characters doesn't diminish Harry's agency nor his "goodness" as a person, even when he disagrees with them. If anything, the fact that someone who is as good as Michael is willing to hang out with Harry, to work with him, trust him, and even call him his friend actually soeaks volumes about Harry's character. And even though Harry himself questions how good of a person he is constantly, his actions and choices in general don't invalidate that validation from Michael and eventually others that, yes, Harry is actually one of the good ones. At least in the first half of the series. After all, there are a number of CHANGES that occur throughout the series, and I don't want to spoil anything.

I think your reactions to the first 3 books really sum up why a lot of people say you need to work through the first few books. Its not that they are bad, more that as the series progressess it gets *so* much better. Couple this with the fact that bevause the later books are so improved, it paints the first few in a worse light. A sort of reverse rosetinted goggles.

I agree whole-heartedly. I always enjoyed the first two "weaker" books. Sure, Jim wrote them when in college, but that doesn't make then *bad*. It has a lot of "youthful Harry" charm, like his boob obsession cause he hasn't been laid in literal years. It also has ground rules that are still followed very harshly even in the most recent books (Peace Talks, at time of writing).

Your reaction to Grave Peril is pretty much why people say "you need to get over the first two books". They aren't bad by any means, they are fun to read, but they are also where Butcher is still trying to find his way. Grave Peril is where the series takes off. Have fun reading the rest of the series, you're in for a wild ride. :)

The first murder scene as Harry describes it made me think of him entering the room and first seeing the woman's figure from one side then he further enters the room from the victim's right. Her breast would be immediately apparent from the right, then as he moves further into the room he sees her ribs broken outwards on the other side of her body. Any "love" potion from Bob would have to be a lust potion. The spirit doesn't know what love is.

Came here to mention these points. Each of the examples Merphy has taken issue with has an in world/in text explanation that I feel makes the criticisms...not entirely unjust... but somewhat misrepresented. 1. The on-screen text literally refers to the lower rib cages in the torso I.e below where the outline of the breasts stops. This sort of dueling perspective is something Butcher often employees often to try and lighten the impact of these types of gruesome scenes, and at this point we don't have a mouthy little ME to help diffuse that with scene appropriate comedy. 2. As you mentioned the love potion is one of Bob's recipe - of course with this characters personality a love potion is going to be a stimulant for the libido. 3. Tara is already alluded to as being a supernatural creature at this point of the story. I think it's a fairly intuitive move for the character to make in terms of causing a distraction particularly given the type of creature she is. 4. We are agreed on Michael. He very quickly became a favourite character. I love everything about the way religion is used from that perspective. Overall the series is literally Dresden's recounting of the things that happened throughout his life and I think it's somewhat expected that if you're looking back at your life you have an exaggerated or would linger on memories that were pleasant or a somewhat pleasant memory for you (here I'm specifically referring to the affects of the love potion with Susan and Tara's little show in the spotlight)

As others have mentioned, the audiobooks for this series are FANTASTIC! James Marsters IS Harry Dresden - he does such a great job representing Harry's personality and dry sense of humor. I just fell in love with Harry. And his representations of the whole cast of characters is amazing. Toot toot and Bob are particular favorites. I started listening to the audiobooks at Book 3 and I'm not sure if it's because the books get better or the narration just added so much to the story, but I fell in love with the books at that point. Probably a combination of both. Great review of the books Merphy - it made me want to start a re-listen of the series immediately!

I do think that the narration improves as the books go on. You can hear real differences in how Marsters will use breathing to punctuate scenes, and also how he gets more and more comfortable with narration as the series goes on. Not to mention his voices get better too. It was a thing that really made me love the audio series; we're getting to watch both Butcher and Marsters improve at their crafts at the same time, and it's cool being along for that ride.

I think once you hit Summer Knight you'll see what everyone was taking about. I love books 1-3 but Butcher really hits his stride as a writer in Book 4. Glad to see you enjoying the series. It's amazing in my opinion.

The remarkable thing about the Dresden series is that each book gets better. When I started reading Dresden, I thought no way Butcher can keep up this progression, and then early in book 6, Blood Rites, I thought here it is. This is where the author can't keep the pace of improvement, but as the story progressed, Butcher proved me wrong. Not only has he plotted the story arc impressively, his writing skills continue to develop. This combination produces the perpetual growth of the story.

My favorite thing so far about this series (im on Ghost Story) is the changes. The consequences from one book always carry over and thing from multiple books ago come back. Characters are all taken seriously and Butcher isnt scared to completely change everything and never go back.

I agree on you with the comments about his world building and ability to introduce information without overloading the readers. Butcher had a somewhat antagonistic relationship with his writing teacher in Collage. as an example she warned him to not make the character used to "Explain" how things work a talking head. so he created Bob.

Regarding immaturity and the first few books, it's probably worth remembering Butcher *was* young when he started writing these. I believe book 1 was a college project.

He wrote chapter 1, showed it to his college teacher, she said "yeah, this is great. you could get this published." and then he went home and wrote the rest of it, 2, and 3, as well as outlined the ENTIRE series.. IIRC.

The Dresden Files is most definitely worth listening to on audible, the narrator James Marsters does a phenomenal job. I got “Cold Days” on audible because I had a long drive ahead of me and omg I was blown away. After finishing I ordered all the Dresden books on audible and listened to the whole series. Marsters IS Harry Dresden and his narration gives amazing life to the series.

While I agree, I would humbly caution the fans (and this is not directed at anyone specifically) to not overhype Changes. I have seen it where several YT reviewers were inundated with "OMG wait till you get to book 12!!!!" and it either spoiled the experience or gave the reviewer such high expectations that were impossible to live up to, regardless of the amazing quality of the book.

Twenty years later, I still go back to re-read Bianca's party in Grave Peril to see connections that we had no way of knowing existed until the later books were published. There is so much set up in that one scene, and Butcher has hinted that we've barely scratched the surface.

People tell you, you need to get past the third book until it really gets going, because it's true... It's not that the first three books are trash. They are really, really good, but it get's so much better on top of that after. :D From that point on connections snap into place and side characters are build up. It's absolutely awesome!

I LOVE the Dresden Files. It’s my absolute favorite series, and I love Butcher’s writing. I have never heard anyone say to skip over the first 3 books, that’s an atrocious thing to say imo! The books absolutely get better as time goes on and Butcher fully explores his world and character development, but you can’t appreciate the character development if you don’t know where they start. IMO the thing that makes Butcher make such good characters is that he writes their flaws so believably. No one is perfect, especially not Dresden, but those traits make him more real if that makes sense? I’m frustrated by some of the same things you’ve mentioned, but I don’t think I’d understand Harry as much as I do if he didn’t have those flaws. Excited for you to join the fandom and keep exploring the world! Maybe I should start my third read through? Or listen to them as I head the audiobooks are top notch.

Just finished battlegrounds for my 3rd reread and i can tell you the audiobook are definitively worth it! The only issue is that they are "short" depending on your listening time (10-20hrs depending on the title). So for me i had to alternate audiobook and reading them to be able to use my audible free book. Anyway i completely agree with you, i had never heard before that the first 3 books were weak. For me, i think it is the books around 5 or 6 that are a dip in quality, to then reach out for the stars. Although on reread, i really had an issue with the pacing in the last 2 peace talk and battleground, even taking them together as one book.

I agree that characters should have flaws, my problem with Dresden is that he basically has this hero complex where he wants to save everyone even though he _knows_ he can't reasonably succeed, and yet instead of figuring out a plan to even out the playing field, he just goes in against the big bad of the book armed only of recklessness and almost suicidal pride. And yet somehow wins through luck and, well, plot armour, each time. And he knows that he just got lucky, he says so incessantly, yet the next book he does the exact same thing AGAIN.

@@36424567254 you're describing character traits and calling them faults. No, Harry is written to be that way. He has a hero complex and he knows that he can't save everyone. That doesn't mean he's going to stop trying. His stubborn streak is stronger than his common sense. Taking that away from Harry would be like taking away Gollum's obsession with the ring. At that point you've stripped him of his basic characteristics. You can see it in each book. He tries, he prepares, he works hard, he builds and fortifies. But the big bad of the next book will inevitably be something stronger, faster or smarter than Harry. And Harry will still jump in head-first. Because that's the kind of guy Harry Dresden is. I don't know if you've read everything, but in a recent book Harry, who is relatively safe in a fortified castle and surrounded by Gods and Fae, jumps down multiple stories with almost no backup to face a dozen monsters, just because he heard a child's scream. As for plot armor, Harry has less plot armor than most protags. It just so happens that Harry is special in that universe. We've been told from the start that Harry has raw magical power comparable to the strongest wizards on the planet. These only get better! Skin Game is my fav so far. This series makes me laugh and cry more than any other series. The characters are amazing and you fall in love ( or love to hate) all of them over time. The writing quality gets so much better after the first handful of books too. My absolute fav series of all time. You have no idea what you’re in for! I wish I could read them for the first time again.

Fantastic series, for me it's tied with Wheel of Time. Every book adds another layer or two, enriching and deepening your understanding and depth of this fantastic world. Butcher is a genius, and it gets better and better. Overall, this series has the best group of smaller side characters of any series I've ever read- Mouse, Toot-Toot, Mister, and Bob, who is the single best supporting character of all time, any genre, full stop! Enjoy your first time through... I recommend going back later and reading through again-you will enjoy it even more the 2nd time around!

It's a favorite series of mine. I will agree the first few books are rough. Summer Knight is when I really started to fall in love with it, and it only gets better from there. By around Dead Beat I was ride for life. I am still not caught up, but I finally read Changes, so I have 5 books to go.

What I like about Stormfront is that it never lets you rest... If Harry has 2 days to accomplish something he will suddenly need 1 day. Everything is right now, everything is immediate. There is a sense of urgency in this book. I love that.

I absolutely LOVE the series, I am glad you are enjoying it. It is honestly the best audiobook series that I have listened to as well, James Marsters is amazing as the "reader". I really agree about the downplay of the early books. I think part of it is that people didn't start reading it much when it was early in the series and they are comparing them to the later books, which of course, are better based on Butcher getting more and more experience and growth in the characters.

You hit on the strengths and weaknesses of the early books incredibly well. Definitely the world building is some of the best in contemporary writing, especially as the series progresses. I also agree that many writers tend to put out a series of stories that are kind of detached but Butcher puts on a master class in weaving the books together. Butcher handles the Fae as the dangerous beings they were originally believed to be. My roommate and I both agree that it was a huge loss that a streaming service or movie studio didn't set up a high quality series or movie franchise with a younger Lee Pace as Harry Dresden. Pace fits the description, is a great actor and importantly, has the height and build to be Harry. Sigh... could have been amazing. As the series continues, it just gets better and better.

I'm really glad you're enjoying them! I'm not quite so harsh as to say that you should skip the first three, but I usually say that the first two tread a lot of the same ground as each other and you can usually safely skip one of them. Similarly, while it never totally goes away, the fanservice is the worst in the first few books IMO, which again is one of those things where it might deter you from an otherwise pretty great series, so that contributes to that "just get through it" mentality that a lot of people share. You're in for a heck of a ride. One of the things that Butcher does best IMO is *consequences* for choices. I will keep it spoiler free here, but you may have noticed that often Dresden will be faced with what he is "supposed to do" vs what is "right to do" and he always picks what is right. However, what makes the *series* so good is that the whole reason he is supposed to do some things is that there are big consequences for not doing so, and boy do those consequences show up hard. There are books down the line with HUGE events that can be traced back all the way to the actions taken in these first three books. One of my biggest annoyances in fantasy/super hero stuff is when the hero gets to have their cake and eat it too. When they get to be morally righteous, bucking all of the reasons why something is a bad idea even if it is right, and then they just succeed through the power of being nice or right. The right choice is often supposed to be the harder choice, but a lack of consequence means that it really isn't the harder choice at all. Dresden does not, under any circumstance, get to have his cake and eat it too, and I love the series for that.

I think that people say to just bear with first 3 books is that the first books are like police procedurals. There's a simple mystery that needs solving and we tackle that. Monster of the week as the X Files called it. But then after Bianca's party the books move into epic fantasy with overarching big story, big lore and big players with hidden plots and big wars. Its a big shift in tone. You could take the first 3 as vignettes and the next books are all big series tomes.

funny enough, I liked the small scope of the first books and really disliked the epic fantasy shift of later books (even more so since henry is obviously and self-admittedly not prepared for that, and he just wins through sheer luck and plot armour each time), so much so that I dropped the series around I think 6th or 7th book.

I think it shows character growth well and the stakes keep getting upped every book along with capabilities of Dresden. A lot of epic fantasy books tell you straight away something epic is happening and you know the scope and the characters going through it are just part of it. But Dresden books are first person, we only know as much as Harry knows, understands or sees. We see the world through him and it's not a subjective view of everything.

I started the series about a month ago too and I'm already on book 11. Pretty much nonstop binging the audiobooks. There are surprisingly few reviews for a series that I at least thought was as mainstream as it gets. I can't wait for more Dresden videos and to hear your takes with full spoilers.

Butcher's writing really improves throughout the series, it's good in the beginning, but it becomes truly amazing later on. There are moments that are so funny, so dramatic, so mind blowing.

The genre that Jim Butcher pulls from to move these books along is old pulp noir. In the spirit of the Sam Spade type stories. He published a "writer's toolbox", where he explained that it was about the pacing of the story. In those old books the detective/ protagonist may slip out the window of the office building successfully, so the security guard never sees him, but he escapes into the alley and the waiting arms of the mob who gladly beat him and tell him to stay out of their way. He stated that no scene should be a complete success or a complete failure so as to make the story keep moving. The lust potion as you rightly described it is in Harry's world much easier to make than an actual love potion, and "mind magic" is not only frowned on, but hunted down, so that is very consistent with the lore of the world. Yes Harry is a "breast guy" as you have aptly pointed out, but Sam Spade would fall out of his chair for "the gams on that doll"... I have read every book in the series to date, and do not anticipate missing any. Have fun, and do not anticipate any story threads being forgotten, Jim has a method for remembering them that keeps them till he needs them again. Have fun.

Each time a new book gets released I relisten to the entire series. This is one of the few series that I have become heavily invested in. Would love to see a reboot of the TV series. I love the characters/world Jim has created, and the oration of James Marsters for the audio books is top notch. It's hard for me to find similar combinations of author and narration that capture my attention as this series. 17 books in and a projected 6 or 7 more to complete the series.

It's a wonderful series. Butcher's takes on Magic, Faith, Belief, and Mythology in the Dresden-verse are refreshingly original twists that do well to pay homage to the sources. Not just any vampire, a Cheesey Vampire. The ride continues, keep on keeping on. In hindsight, most people come to the conclusion that while they're still good books, the first 3 entries are the weakest in the series. While there's another relatively low point or two further out, even the short stories and side stories are bangers. You'll probably find maybe 2 more 3 outta 5s throughout the rest of the series. I'll say, as someone that's been reading The Dresden Files since 2006, I highly enjoy the first three. they ARE rough compared to the future novels (you'll see what I mean if you continue the books) but they are also quite good setup. I still remember the night I discovered The Dresden Files. My wife and I have a deep interest in the occult and were legit reading books of magic and ordering ingredients for spell work when a commercial for the short lived TV series popped up. "Detective.. Wizard.. The Dresden Files" the thing that made our eyes bulge is that my nickname since 2004 has been "Dresden" to the point that I've changed my first name legally to Dresden. So as someone interested in the supernatural and also as someone named Dresden (first name, not last, but still) how could I NOT love this series? You're in for a ride if you continue. Don't forget there's tons of short stories and even graphic novels. All worth a read. So good.

Harry's boob fixation did eventually become distracting, I felt. I'm not particularly prudish, but man... A woman we haven't met before strolls into the scene. We don't know her name, who she is, why she's there, or anything at all, but we will most definitely know her cup size soon. There's a book coming up where Harry is undercover at a set for a pornographic movie -- Butcher must have pulled a few hand muscles trying to type descriptions of all that décolletage. But the world is a lot of fun. And Harry does eventually calm down a bit on the boobs.

I was first introduced to the series through the Sci Fi TV Series. Quite a bit was changed between the books and the series, but it was good enough to get me to start reading the books. I am pretty much a straight up Fantasy reader and read very little of the Mystery or Horror genre (other than what is included in Fantasy series). However, the world building in the series was so good, I couldn't put the books down.

I'm so excited, this is one of my favorite series! Probably the biggest issue I see people having is Harry's obsession with female bodies even when it doesn't matter narratively. I have seen a few people claim that it's intentional as a reference to the pulpy detective novels that Butcher was clearly influenced by. As far as I know that was never explicitly confirmed and even if it was idk how much of a defense it would really be, but I do tend to give Butcher the benefit of the doubt that it's him writing a flaw into Harry rather than just being sex-obsessed himself. I love the fact that you mention how Harry is very competent but also very rarely the biggest hero or strongest person around. It's a fine line to walk but I think it's usually pulled off well here. First person is usually not my favorite perspective either, but I do think it makes the world-building and characterization of so many other characters seems even more impressive. There are times later in the series where I don't think the exposition is as strong as you're praising here, although to be fair part of that is probably just a side effect of Butcher having to re-exposition a lot of things just in case there is someone reading the series for the first time. The magic system is exactly the kind of middle ground that I prefer where there are clearly rules to what can and can't be done within the universe but as a reader you don't need a whole lot of background to understand what's going on (usually). I remember the first time I read Grave Peril Michael seemed like he was being written so familiarly that I had to go back and see if I forgot him from the first two books lol. Events from the first two books do come into play later on, but this is the first real major event with dominoes falling further into the series. In a way I think the unserialized nature can be helpful if someone's unsure of starting the series and/or just wants to start with a later book. Even with the added serialization, I usually tell people that someone could probably theoretically start any of the first maybe 7(ish?) books with little to no prior knowledge, although having said prior knowledge would definitely enhance the reading. (and of course it would end up spoiling things from earlier if you ever that person ever did decide to go back and read the previous books)

The Worldbuilding is by far the best part for me and it just increases and expands every single book in such fascinating and dark/sad ways. I’m sure others have told you relentlessly but the “horniness” of Dresden doesn’t ever exactly go away 😂 but it does change, and while it’s among mine and a lot of people’s criticisms i still think it’s interesting to see how over time Jim’s writing matures along with Dresden himself. Hope you do more of these. If you like the first books you’re gonna love the rest of them.

Harry's personal journey of character development is one of the things I love about this series. A lot of the time, long book series have characters that say very similar in behaviour to how they started, but I've found that as Harry grows older through the books (from early/mid twenties and over a period of 10+ years - 14 years after Storm Front as of the most recent title according to Jim Butcher's website), he also grows and changes and matures as a person.

This is my favorite series, hands down. The character arcs, over the whole collection, are layered and deep, and the sense of humor is excellent! I experienced them through audio book, with the inimitable James Marsters becoming Harry and all the other characters, with so much brilliance. You've only experienced Jim Butcher's "on ramp" to fully developing the world - it gets so much better than those first 3!

I'm so glad I kept with reading the series. I had to ask on Reddit a few times for suggestions on how to get past the first couple books, because for me Fool Moon was a little challenge to get through. But I'm honestly glad I did. I was listening to the audiobooks and had recently finished Blood Rites. It's much better than I had previously guessed! Taking a slightly break now from the series (I read multiple books at once) but soon will get back into them. So glad I kept up with it, they're pretty good!

The first three books are good!...they only seem weak when you get to the later books that are even better. They may look like lesser work but only in hindsight. I was hooked on the first and was stunned as Butcher keeps upping his game, book after book after book. When you get into the fifth or sixth book and suddenly remember a toss off line from book 1 or 2 that suddenly open your eyes to even more. Butcher was writing little hints in the early works that you walk right by and then further in the series you look over your shoulder at the early books and think "That's what I missed!"

Those scenes are exactly why the first couple of books are skippable. I pushed through and really fell in love with book 4. The world gets SO huge, the way we learn more about different creatures as the books go on. I love them. Plus all the feels, laughing and crying.

And you also have to consider the time constraints of boiling down 50 episodes (16 hours) to 8 episodes (8 hours). And it having a 95% audience score on rotten tomatoes proves you wrong.

But it’s pretty head scratching some of the decisions that the Author makes in the series as it pertains to fan service. Why is this character dancing naked in the street? That’s not because of Harrys POV. Seems more because of the authors fantasy.

Jim Butcher's pacing in the "worst-weekend" style of chronology is tremendous - like a good rollercoaster, unrelenting and almost break-neck, but with just enough breathing time that you remember the ride and want to go on it again and again. The criticism of fan service is somewhat valid but it's an uncharitable way to read those scenes I think. For sure Jim Butcher is a horn-dog, and being a 1st person book there's a certain amount of fairly benign male-gaze, but Butcher does a great job at making sure all of those scenes have very valid in-world explanations: -Juxtaposing the boob description with the ribcage makes the whole scene more visceral and it's more obvious from the angle Harrys at -Bob the skull is a pure horn-dog so he made a lusty love potion (hence the cheap ingredients to make it - pretty good comedy imo) -Tara is a naked animal in her natural form and can't understand human foolishness, makes cops being distracted by it way more plausible with how natural she is -All the rapey vampire scenes are heavily turned around on Harry in Grave Peril, flipping the traditional male vampire predator vibes
