I feel like Witch Hat Atelier scratched that itch that I had for fantasy series wver since I've read Harry Potter as a child. Don't get me wrong, I love that series, but I can't deny that the wonder that I felt in the wizarding world was mostly from my imagination of what else could be possible outside of Harry's adventures. Witch Hat feels like a fuller world with a magic system that gives that same sense of wonder of what could be possible while still making it feel tangible.

I picked up this manga for the art alone (didn't read the synopsis) but the story got me hooked immediately. The use of drawn circles as the power system is extremely smart, picking something that looks easy enough in theory but is actually quite refined. Also her mentor acting strange and having his own agenda, etc. Kodansha has a big humble bundle a few months ago so I got to pick up most volumes until vol 11 for pretty cheap, it was so good!!

Witch Hat Atelier is one of those series that I've heard quiet murmurings about for years at this point, all of them positive, but never got around to actually reading myself because I'm slow to pick up new things, especially manga. But at this point, I think I really need to get into this one. A fantasy world's magic being weird and spooky and not working like most people in that world think it does is a huge selling point for me, but so are deeply empathetic coming-of-age stories and manga with distinctive and extremely pretty art, so this is covering a fair few bases right off the bat!

Agreed with everything you said, but I'm sticking with the Print Volumes and I will recap with the anime when they finally announce a release date and a studio. Volume 12 is next to be released on May 21, 2024. Online chapters are further, but I prefer the print volumes because I get a large piece of the story. Even if its just 2 volumes a year, it's enough. NOTE: Only 1 volume released in 2023 and I had to reread the previous volume cause it had been so long, but it was understandable because Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen Manga started releasing in English. Volume 1 is out. Volume 2 and 3 will be out in 2024 (in February and April). Up to 5 volumes in Japan with more to come.

I'm a physical volume enjoyer as well even though we're well behind digital. I don't think they're too crazy expensive because JJK volumes are about €10 a volume for a good amount of chapters and you get to hold the book in your hands + get a break from a screen.

The only problem Witch Hat Atelier has is, imo, that the villains are actually the good guys (as in their ideology is actually the right one), yet the author makes them evil by showing them torturing children and other stuff... I still hope that ir gets better in the future, as it is one of my favourite mangas of all time
