Honestly playing Twin Snakes and MGS2 back-to-back felt very, very consistent. MGS was always anime bullshit to begin with. MGS for PSone feels dishonest compared to where the series went

I agree. The inclusion of a lot of MGS2 engine additions werent fully implemented. It was remade a bit too closely in fact, mechanically. And the one major gameplay change (FPV) undermines the entire rest of the game. They didnt go as far as they should've in changing what was needed to make the MGS2 engine fully integrated.

I should mention Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake actually started on the MSX2, not the NES. They were ported to the NES sometime later. But hey, you managed to go in-depth with this one. I've been having a hard time finding reviews for Twin Snakes that don't just gloss over it. Nice work!

Actually, you're kinda mis-informed there. Only Metal Gear 1 was ported to the NES. Metak Gear 2: Solid Snake was built for the MSX2 AFTER Snake's Revenge.

From what I've heard, the original is still better than this remake. Snake doesn't act like a douche bag like he does in Twin Snakes, the controls and level design aren't quite as bad as Twin Snakes', and the cut scenes aren't needlessly over-the-top like in Twin Snakes (I know MGS can be over-the-top at times, but these type of moments in Twin Snakes don't really gel well with the rest of the game). Part of this game's problem is that it wasn't made by Kojima. Instead, by Miyamoto, Silicon Knights, and Ryuhei Kitamura. While they're all good creators in their own rights, they didn't really get it right with this game. Their mixture of different styles and design techniques really made a mess of this game. But this still all speculation from a comparison of the two made by someone else. Maybe my opinions might be different if I play the game myself.

+TheRoyTeal96 Story-wise, the original is definitely better, though some of the voice acting is a bit off. This one plays better in my opinion though. The original has some rather stiff controls, and some of the bosses can be quite frustrating because of it. But on the other hand, this one might be a bit too easy because of the tweaks they made. So I dunno, one's aged rather poorly, and the other's a bit of mess as you said. I still prefer The Twin Snakes though.

I don't know. I thought Twin Snakes was kind of a shit. I hold the original PS1 version dearly to my heart and is actually more memorable than the remake in my opinion. It really felt like Twin Snakes tried too hard to be appealing, like it tried to fix something that wasn't broken. The voice acting was better handled in the original in my opinion, it has a better score, tear jerking moments were handled better in the original and it felt more epic despite the limitations of the hardware. Twin Snakes tried to mix the claustrophobic map design of the original and the gameplay mechanics of MGS2 and those two don't mesh well to me. The mechanics from MGS2 made bosses needlessly easy and it felt like they haven't added much effort instead they mixed two elements that don't go together. Even the over the top animu, Devil May Cry, Matrix, bullet time, slow-mo cutscenes were cringey to look at and I couldn't take the game as a whole seriously since you can't do any of those stunts in the actual game. It just doesn't make any sense to me. I know we're talking about a game that is basically a sci-fi anime with mechas and melodrama, but I think MGS original constructed the presentation better. The douchebag Snake scene during the Baker conversation, Snake avoiding a missile launched by a Hind D helicopter by stepping on it and making a backflip and Snake shoryukening the fuck out of Liquid are some of the evidences to what I dislike about Twin Snakes. The cutscenes from the remake felt like they dragged out the scenes bit longer just for the sake of dramatic cinematography, that's why I prefer the original cutscenes because despite the length of them they still felt more straightforward, they didn't add bullshit small scenes and don't have awkward pauses just to increase the length time. Maybe it's just me, but Twin Snakes felt cheap and lazy and tried too hard to appeal to the demographic at the time when The Matrix gained huge popularity compared to the subtlety of the RE1 remake. But I respect your opinion on preferences nevertheless.

I don't have a reason to dislike the PS1 version at all though. In fact I don't. The Twin Snakes was just the version that I grew up with, so that's the one I covered. And because I'm used to how things are here, the PS1 version feels weird to me. Though I do fully agree about the matrix bull shit. Especially that part where Snake jumps a doorway for no absolute reason. It's dumb.

Totally agree, Even the graphical limitations of the first PS1 version made it more interesting for me, it looked more like an art style than a regular humanoid render (bit cartoony and video gamey). The way the eyes were just shaded blotches really made the characters look more grim and somehow closer to Yoji Shinkawa's artwork.

As someone else already said this remake isn't that good, and as you said it is unbalanced. They pretty much made the same PS1 game but with MGS2 mechanics, making bosses a cakewalk and a joke in all honesty, or like that one time where you have to crouch on top of a pit of lava avoiding a big metal thing that will knock you over... yeah in the original game you couldn't walk while crouching making that part a thing of patience. And I doubt I need to mention the whole backflips, hanging like spider-man on the ceiling, do a flip over a door, etc... then again, it's hard to dislike a game you grew up with (like me and some SMT games like P2 or some PS1 games like Harry Potter and other Disney stuff at the moment). Good review, man.

true, but the thing is if you didn;t play the original during the ps1 era, you just can;t do it now, you see, for me, as a young 27 old, gaming experience time line was like this, nes-sega genesis-pc since 2005, with a little bit of ps2 in 2008. and ps3-4-5 with pc and vr. also, ps ps vita nowday. nes had it's good old 2d graphics, artstile and what's called pixelart now, it looked good, still is, not dated or ugly, sega genesis was even better 2d graphics, amazing, colorful, a lot of sprites, comix zone can be played any day, and with some msaa no one who never saw it, could ever distinguish it from some good modern indie game. ps2 is another console which games never truly outdated, it had pretty mature 3d already, games can be played by a person, who used to modern visuals. Even psp games still can look rather good on the go and on the vita screen. But between the mighty good old 2d and sprights, and modern visuals we got an early 3d era, it had to be done to get where we are now, kudos to those who paionered the tech back then, and i know it blowed your mind when you saw it at the time, but let's face the truth, an early 3d era is the only one, that truly outdated, to the point where it's just ugly and hard to play. early 3d was so fast in it developing, that the early stage of it was just thrown out of the superspeed train, it was already 3d, but extremly low-poly, and shimery. Even hasn't Z-buffer at all on ps1 it had 3d models of characters, ones where you can't see faces on. Toy story on sega genesis has drasticly better visuals than any ps1 game i know. Only ps1 games somewhat playable now is the ones with more of a cortoonish style, like spider-man 2000. So the only way to get into mgs 1 now is twin snakes with the original soundtrack, ps1 can live only in memory of those who played it back in a days. Sadly.

lol fair enough. This video's old as fuck and I've grown to dislike it too. Not that I necessarily disagree with anything I've said, but stuff's just worded poorly. "Twin Snake's hasn't aged and the original has" was probably a bad angle to push as well haha. Anyway, I actually played those back in the day, and I really liked them. There's enough level ideas there for like two entire MGS games. It's crazy.
