Nice review, it was kind surprising to watch something about this game here. I think what most compromissed the game was the name that it was carrying, not because it was a obvious way of making money, but because for being a metal gear title it would have to keep certains aspects, naturally holding the game to execute all the possible ideias that would give it a orignal feel etc. Konami has to belive in their devs, there is no need to keep pushing already famous franchises to sell games.

This review is probably one of the better reviews for Survive I've seen so far. Although I do have some questions, 1:Did you ever figure out that if you return to base camp instead of reloading a save, the game will spawn a box where you died containing all the supplies you had when you died? 2:Did you fight those two end game bosses? What did you think of them and the music for each one? 3:Any thoughts on the multiplayer? 4:What made you wanna make this review for Survive?
@thorhighheels6 жыл бұрын
1. I did not know that. Though doesn't reloading a save put you back at base camp anyway? From what it could tell the game only saves there, apart from one or two story heavy sequences. 2. Do you mean the optional post game ones? In that case no. As for what appeared in the main game boss-wise, I thought it was okay. For the most part I figured that the game wouldn't have any boss fights at all, so it was a neat surprise when one finally happened. And I liked all of the music. Reminded me a lot of MGS2, as they reused certain sounds and motifs, which was nice. 3. Nope. I'd like to try the coop stuff (if it allows you to play the main campaign at least) but I personally don't care for competitive play. The Wormhole Digger tower defense bits were by far my least favorite part as well, and I think the multiplayer is mostly those. 4. I caught the first hour of the game on a stream, and was surprised by how good it looked. I also got the vibe that a lot of people were hating on the game purely because of how shitty Konami is, which didn't seem entirely fair to me. So I figured I'd give it a fair shot.
@123darkelf6 жыл бұрын
ThorHighHeels 1:Yeah it does but reloading the save makes you gotta start over while returning to base camp allows you a chance to get everything you collected back. 2:That's a mighty shame since I feel the first optional boss I thought was pretty fun. Also, man, that theme for the boss is insane. 3:Yeah, the multiplayer isn't really competitive, it's more of working together to get better loot. Still, campaign co-op would of been nice. 4:Ah, yeah, honestly I really disliked how every review on KZbin barely added anything new, literally the worse example of this is Angry Joe who kinda bitches about stuff other reviewers already talked about, including the buying save slots stuff, he even called the game easy, then showed a clip pf a multiplayer match with him in a walker gear. Honestly, I could see he didn't really seem like he wanted to review it. Also almost every reviewer says,"Just put up fences and poke them with a stick to win." While that's an ok strategy for very early game, by the mid to late game point, that's not the best strategy as more types of enemies are introduced. Word of advice,"The shotgun is your baby, worship the shotgun, care for the shotgun, it is your only friend."

Good stuff as ever. I remember being wowed by how hanging out in the rain too long could have you getting a cold in mgs2 and that it actually tipped off guards at awkward moments with you sneezing- the survival elements have been in the franchise for long time, but more as little thematic ideas (like killing things for food in 3) than structural elements. The worst thing is somewhere there's a parallel world where this game could have been made with a more interesting structural backbone like forcing back a palpable infection around your base or something, or even carried by an unusual writing hook. Heck, there's plenty of mediocre games that I've sat through because the talking heads were good (*cough* destiny *cough*). Thinking about the silent hill comparison, those games are mostly brutally serious with touches of humour on top, but for me, the metal gear games are the inverse - super silly, but with some savagely dark touches on top, as if to say "hey, hey, you're laughing about otacon peeing his pants, and soldiers ogling magazines, well here, have some child soldiers and waterboarding because this is like soooper serious y'all."
@thorhighheels6 жыл бұрын
personally i thought the waterboarding was hilarious xD But yeah I agree. I think there is an infection mechanic of some kind though. One of my guys had a 80% INFECTION RATE in big black letters with a red bar around it. But once I was able to build a med bay it just disappeared, and nothing ever came of it. There were a few other mechanics and statistics like that too. Things that felt like they were gonna end up being something big, just kinda washed away as another one off metric as soon as I built a new thing, or progressed the story. Not sure what they were going for there, but it does give the impression that they were trying out loads of different things with this game, but ended up running out of time or money before it could materialize.

It's to make it feel more tangible I'd guess but especially when you're trying to get shit done fast and you try to let off the button at the last second and accidentally cancel the animation, shit like that gets annoying fast
@hirobeez4 жыл бұрын
@@elijahelbourn5709 Just as any other mechanic, I believe there are places where it can be used effectively... But on the f*king main menu? As an example of a time it almost worked, on the Fatal Frame series on the Wii, they implemented the press and hold mechanic to pick up items. The first couple of times that was very effective since if you buy into the fantasy it is reeeally creepy. But after a while you get desensitized to it, and then it becomes a nuisance because you have to go through the animation every single time.
@elijahelbourn57094 жыл бұрын
@@hirobeez It also works in cases where its a big decision to make, like in Fable III when you have to pick between two options when you're the ruler (or other big decisions in general.) Holding down the button makes it feel just a little more powerful and final, it feels a tad more satisfying to me at least. An example of where it sucks is any other point in Fable III, a huge chunk of things you interact with, require that you hold down the button for a couple, and in some cases when you want to interact with NPCs, you have to hold the button for what feels like ages. There are several cases when it could work, making a decision feel important, adding tension, maybe some other things I can't think of. It just works in moderation. A good way to do a suspenseful horror part would to be making the first time you do it in the game, a long press and animation to hammer home the suspense, but after that to make it taps or very short presses, because its not going to work the same way over and over again after the first impression.

This is very refreshing! This review does a good job of presenting the good with the bad. I do disagree with a few things but that is where personal taste comes in. I don’t really get the spear and fence strategy as getting in close with enemies can be really dangerous as a few can take you out quickly, I found the bow and arrow my go to. And that goes back to preferred play style. I am having a great time with the game and I find that it gets better the movie you play. The game can be a very slow burn. Hell, I made a video defending this game especially with all the misinformation. Good job 😀

If you have a large survivor base, with a lots of extra weapons/equipment/food; you can send them to retrieve your Lost Boxes (Packs you drop when you either die or Return to base camp since you're too far away from a nearby teleporter). They can get it back in about 24minutes, while you go do other things. Found it especially useful to do it in the 2nd part of the map, where there's a massive amount of resources, but you can't loot all of it AND return to a nearby teleporter. Honestly, I never had trouble sneaking around. Bow & Arrow never got removed for a Spear. And i used twohanded melee most of the beginning of the game, playing ala Dark Souls against wanderer groups. Exploration rewards you with great amount of loot + recipes for new tools to bring. Like more Molotovs carried, More Lures carried, and Arrow Quivers. I'm at the point in the game where i can carry an entire match with just Heavy Arrows / Bow without ever really running out of ammo. EDIT : Yeah, thsi game is severly underbudget. They dont have any advertising, the voice actors were paid lazily, and Masahiro Ito only glossed over designs. But holy shit is it a better survival game than anything else in the market. Unoptimized, 60USD +60USD DLC, Bloated, game engines a mess - etc. The game gets pretty fun during co-op, especially unlocking the subclasses, and also postgame bosses. Its best played in short bursts, and updates for the game seem to be fine for now.

Dude, Dark Souls works different. You only only use souls, which is both money and XP, but you still keep all the equipment and items you found andshortcuts you unlock. So if you die you don't loose all of your progress, just your money. And you can get it back if you make it to your death spot without dying again Plus all the regular enemies will respawn (bosses don't). it's more like a checkpoint design with a few tweaks to make it more interesting.

Hey. MGSurvive “”””pro”””” here. As someone who has spent 60 hours on this game I got some tips for all of you. If you knock an animal down with the run punch (what he did to the Zebra) you can fulton them, sending them back to base- and it actually increases the amount of shit you get off them (it seems at least) but it goes in your base inventory so you can’t access the raw food immediately. Once you unlock animal cages make sure to have different breeds of animals inside them because you can get more rare crafting items consistently After you get a couple of farms you’ll be swimming in more potatoes than you’ll ever need. Seriously. Hunger is no longer an issue. After the zombies get to around like 1200 kuban each it’s not even worth looting them you should have good enough stuff to just do a coop mission (very hard to find friends queue time on PS4 was around 5-10 min on weekends) and get S rank. Make sure to speed up the drill and do side missions!

The main thing I'll say about this game is the that from start to end is a completely different game from the endgame. And im not talking about the section where you get the extra classes im talking about the normal/hard/and extreme missions and the legendary/epic tier loot. Once you get that stuff this game goes up in fun tenfold honestly the true end game of the normals and hards, and doing extreme salvage missions with friends is some of the most chaotic and fun times ive had online outta any game. Its a shame tho that few will ever get to experience it as its the VERY LAST thing you can access in the game. And mean that because not only do you have to bet the main story AND unlock the sub classes, but you also have to max out atleast one of them to even have the ability to enter and extreme mission. Which extreme missions are like their Namesake extreme they require atleast 3 fully geared up people or 2 experienced max gear and level players to clear. But the rewards are plentiful. The last loot you get the purple and gold gear makes this game so fun. In the main story your gear gradually upgrades to rare/blue grade but through the story thats all you have access to. Although they are good in comparison to what you start with they still dont even compare to the likes of gold or even purple tier gear. I got my taste of the purple stuff after defeating the first optional boss bigmouth which was a treat to kill. I had to plan how i was going to take him out and ultimately it depleted all my character's immediate supplies plus a few dodgy melee hits to down him. But my reward was my first ever purple weapon. And once i had a taste i had to have more. And thats how i discovered the multi-player salvage missions. Which are beefed up versions of the defense waves you play in the story. Normals are their rough equivalent. At the time i didn't know there was an active online community so i learned how to do them solo which is made easier after you unlock the auto turret. Eventually i gained access to the entire roster of purple loot by soloing normal and later even hard missions. And them i found out that the game still has some active players and them i teamed up and learned strategies to get the gold level loot. To put into perspective the power of the upper tier loot that boss that took me upwards of 30 mins to beat my first time with the max gear from the main story. Is now something i can destroy in no exaggeration SECONDS. In hard and extreme missions the bosses even spawn in as and optional objective that if i have a minute to spare ill do for the fun of it along with the defense wave. If you made it this far congratulations, this was a rambling post but i wanted to be as thorough as possible considering how few people will ever get to experience what i experienced. This game is transformed by its endgame. But understandably so there's nearly 60 hrs worth of gameplay you've gotta power through first to get to it which i think is a huge flaw and unreasonable to ask of anyone to get to just to have fun. I only got that far outta curiosity and the enormous chunk of time i had during the pandemic. But if anyone's up to it id say go for it. Once you unlock subclasses your journey truely has begun.

This review made me buy the game, and while it does feel jank and there’s an over reliance on horde mode stuff, I’m having a blast when I’m out exploring the Dust. It’s a shame that Konami rushed the thing out of the door because the game has great ideas, but it’s obvious corners were cut and needed more polish and development time. And it’s even more of a shame the fact that reviewers crucified the game due to Kojima not being involved, while not GOTY contender by any means, game is far from worst game and saw on on so many lists. I have a theory that death stranding will be a more polished version of this and Konami last big F to Kojima was using his unfinished design document for making this game.
@thorhighheels6 жыл бұрын
Happy to hear you liked it! Also yeah, I've seen people echo similar sentiments. I don't remember where I read it, but it seems like ideas and concepts Kojima had were reused in Survive for sure. I've even seen people say that Survive's wormholes might set up plot points for Death Stranding, or at least connecting the games' universes in some way. Plus, PT seems to have been more of a trailer for Death Stranding then it ever was for Silent Hills, and PT has big connections to MGSV with the radio stuff being reused. So while it might not stray past easter egg territory, there's at least SOME connections there already. Kojima's also FAR too cheeky to not reference MGS in Death Stranding haha. But we'll just have to wait and see for anything more I guess.
@BauliusTorvoltos4 жыл бұрын
I agree. It really seems like the majority of people who reviewed it didn't play it for long enough for the game to open up (Thus the "Haha spear is the only weapon" and "Stamina too low" jokes) or were too afraid of a backlash in giving the game any credit at all because we all know that anyone who would have given the game even the slightest positive point in their review would have been shit on and thus just pandered to their audience. Even in the overall Metal Gear community its a case of "You either hate the game or your wrong!" no in between, no giving credit where it's due. The only people who do give it any credit are the people who play it. Kind of like VR actually. Now, I'm not happy with the whole thing between Kojima and Konami (I think they did him dirty tbh), and this game being advertised as a "Post Kojima Metal Gear" but I figured I'd give the game a go and was surprised to see that it was just a really average game. It's not exactly a shit game, but it not really a great game either. A solid 5/10. It does what it sets out to do. A survival game asset flip of MGS V. That being said, I still think that they should have made it it's own thing rather than try and piggy back on the MG name. But hey credit where credit is due. The game is fine. Not bad. But not good either.

The spear is slow and has a small AOE, so the second you got two guys on you in close range, you'll miss the machete. No strategy should be bulletproof in a survival game.

14:04 ehh Dark Souls isnt really that cheap there's a lot of savepoints. Mostly I'm just saying going back a whole hour sounds more frustrating than Dark Souls for me.

Entertaining review of a shitty game. A zombie Metal Gear Spinoff should have been easy to make fun. All other points aside it's a shame you didn't bring up it is still a bad Metal Gear Game when the name on the box is considered too. It's basically a bad version of Monster Hunter meets Resident Evil meets the bottom of the barrel with microtransactions. Occasionally not boring at best and bad at worst.
@breadordecide6 жыл бұрын
GuyOnAChair The game never forces you to use MT. There’s a metal gear in the game and the lore takes place in (spoiler.) It’s not monster hunter, it’s got more in common with mgs3 meets portable ops meets resident evil. It’s about as much a metal gear game as acid and revengeance.
@thorhighheels6 жыл бұрын
While it's certainly not a Kojima title, it didn't really feel "not Metal Gear-like" to me. Especially considering the Acid games or Revengeance, I think they did a perfectly fine job replicating a story with similar themes and plot beats. Simplistic though it may be.
@GuyOnAChair6 жыл бұрын
ThorHighHeels Revengance is a great spinoff. Acid has some really good music but I'm not a fan of the gameplay per say and I think the first Acid titles gameplay is slightly broken where as in the sequel it's functional. Acids music reminds me of your Dead Aim review. 🙂
@thorhighheels6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel the same about Acid 1. I've never played the second one, but every time I've given the first one a try, I always fall in love with the tone & character art, but end up getting really bored with the game it's self after the first couple of levels. I do plan to give it a proper try sooner or later though.

Ive always thought metal gear could have a great survival spin-off game. I mean, metal gear solid 3 was arguably half of a survival game with all of the injury-healing and-food eating gameplay. I thought this game could have been good before release even though Kojima wasn’t there. I feel like this game could have made for a great f2p game, but instead it’s essentially clash of clans with a price tag and the metal gear title. I might just get this game when it goes on sale, because it always does lmao
@CookieeMonstarr6664 жыл бұрын
Konami is so arrogant. If i were them i would make the game f2p with micro transaction. I believe they dont have good sale on this one.

This video was recommended to me today and I have to confess I had forgotten this game even existed, and now I can watch a review without any anger about this in my system, just disappointment.

Man, those weird aliens (especially the giant creepy things with tons of arms and legs) look really cool. It's a shame they couldn't apply that same level of creativity to the zombies and instead just made them generic zombies with crystals stuck in their head.

I'm the kind of sick person who loves staring at numbers getting bigger, tedius gameplay loops, slow incremental progression systems, and obesessive scavanging and hoarding, inventory and resource managing. As long as the sound effects and UI feel good to my brain, that cathartic satisfing trance happens and I will enjoy doing that thing repetitively. It's also that stratigic delayed gratification reward that keeps me motivated and curious about what will happen later with more time invested. I think I'd love this game, like a lot, like way too much. I really dig stupid character designs and bad stories too.

I have friends who are really into it and I've seen loads of videos about it, but I have yet to play it myself. It seems like one of those games that you can spend actual days playing it on end, and I don't think that'll work too well with my review schedule haha
@famuel26044 жыл бұрын
Look apart from anything else this is a bad use of this engine right? Like, no guns, no stealth, no complex enemy behaviours.
@lanasrj6 жыл бұрын
too bad, I would've been okay with a Metal Gear spinoff that Kojima had nothing to do with, but this doesn't pass muster

This game is actually ultra low key revolutionary praxis, distributed as hyper-disguised propaganda to get all of the west on board with supporting both a nuclear energy and nuclear weapons project for the Republic of Kuba, or "Kuban Energy".
@OtkaMak6 жыл бұрын
Not bad review but you completely left out any mention of multiplayer and that where basically me and my friend been sinking in last +30 hours into as thats the fun part of the game, even though the developers are taking some time to flesh it out with adding new content every few weeks.
@thorhighheels6 жыл бұрын
I agree, but I'm really not a multiplayer person. I've barely played any online multiplayer games, and the few I have played were all co-op. So I don't think I could critique it properly if I did. Don't have a reference of quality.

So basically an entirely different game on the fox engine... but on the Fox Engine? Makes me wish this wasn't called "Metal Gear: Survive" but something stupid but fun sounding like... "Corpse Memory" with incredibly vague refrences to the Metal Gear universe so it'd be like "has some potential" or "just needed to get rid of some uneeded stats and needlesly hard experiences" and it'd be decent. I'm guessing the hate for the game is based on it's namesake,which.. yeah i guess that makes sense?
@emulation23692 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed it way more than mgs5(which didn't feel like mgs game at all), I loved the feel of exploration, loved dungeon areas filled with enemies etc PS originally mgs series should have zombies in it even during development of Mgs rising and Kojima wasn't against it... And then all of a sudden everyone forgot it, and started making fun of zombies in survive, lol PSS 90% of reviewers didn't play the game passed 2-3 hours... And it's obvious, if you beat the game yourself 😁
