I like the first ZOE more. I thought a loss of innocence story about a kid was way more interesting than the reluctant hero in the second game. I think the second game focuses more on Jehuty.

I wanted to like this game. The mechs look awesome and the combat is decent enough but the gameplay is boring overall and the main character is one of the most annoying and obnoxious i've ever seen in a game. Zone of the enders 2 is a lot better in every single way.

I can really relate to this review because the exact same thing happened to me except I got so bored so quick when I realized it didn't have as much depth as it looked like it had. You said that the writing picked up a while in, would you say it's actually worth getting anywhere?

MasterJay The part where the story picks up is only about the last hour or so. Before that there's quite a lot of fighting and backtracking. So if you really didn't like the combat at all, then I'd doubt a little bit of story will win you over.

So, for someone whose favourite MGS game has a 2 in it (shocker I know) and who is interested in this series. This really looks like something that could have been a VR mission in MGS2 or even a joke like whoever controlled the VR simulator that Raiden was in and selected the wrong file/program. I mean, just look at Metal gear Ray; the similarity is as clear as day.

To anyone who read this comment. Don't try the HD Collection. Play the PS2 version instead. The HD Collection of this game is on par with the disastrous work made by Konami on the Silent Hill HD Collection. The performance is awful, and the only patch they made was for the PS3, and it only partially fixed the performance of The 2nd Runner. This game and it's sequel should be both running at 60fps all the time.

Currently going back to this on the xbox 360 HD version. Looks good on xbox one with backwards compatibility. When you say it's good and could have been better, that is spot on. Its trying to be deep but just hasn't had the time put into it. I could see this franchise doing a bit better as a jrpg tbh. I'd like to see kojima try his hand at that. Seems like 200 hour epics with convulted story lines would be his jam

I loved this entire game series and the concept of the robots. Completed all of them. And fist of Mars was fun in potentials like you could actualky beat rhe first boss thats supposed to kick your face in by doing perfect at the shooting mini game and get massive exp for the win. It slide a new game plus in your improved skills. Also the concepts here are based in rela science. Like the vector cannon in 2 fired actual space at its targets so it's gonna destroy anything. It was also awesome to see jehuty slowly evolve and change in 2. And the virus in 1 was as crazy as psycho mantis. Remember this is a Kojima game series.

I know this is a late comment, but...Five hours? I picked this game up finally and am playing on easy, and...I know killing every enemy I encounter might be making it SLIGHTLY longer than it would be otherwise, but I' sure it's not making THAT much of a difference. I''m nearly five hours in already and I've only fought the FIRST boss.

It took 5 hours for me, and it's also the average time on howlongtobeat so I don't think it's that strange. Not saying you shouldn't take your time if you're having fun though haha. Personally I always take longer in games as well. I tend to walk slowly and admire the art in games that let me.

So I looked at my save...I'm barely three hours in and according to my brother already very close to the end. It just FELT like five hours to me for some reason.

This was my first Zone of the Enders and I always found it the most responsive and kinetic. It makes the second unplayable for me. Anyway, either by using a cheat every time u boot it up, or by completing the game, u unlock versus mode. This mode is the 2 player mode and is where this game shines. The mechs are terribly balanced against each other, but that can work well when you are against someone of a different skill level coz u choose the one which is appropriate to your skill level. Also, I adore the sparks that comes from the metal ground when you skate along it... it's my favourite thing about the game. The single player is pretty meh but whatever... It looks incredible for its time and it still visually blows me away, but i am a sucker for cyperpunk.

The most fun level in 2 player versus mode i think is called The Park and has loads of big easy and dramatic to destroy concrete walls everywhere. It's awesome.

@@thorhighheels very similar to Zoe but more on the arcade side , story is absolutely barren but you may find virtual on Mars for ps2 , good for about an hour's worth of giant mech schlock

Yeah I mostly bought it for the MGS2 demo, and the game wasn't stellar... but after a generation of PSX games, ZOE at 60fps felt revelatory

I've thought about getting this game before but I really didn't really know anything about it. I think I'll pass now. It doesn't look that interesting to me and I was never a huge fan of mech-stuff so this probably won't do it for me.

it makes mech stuff arcadey, but puts it in a slow story that doesn't make the most of the potential, but it plays good for what it is, even if it could've been far better... a flawed classic imo, but u gotta unlock the versus mode to let it shine properly.
