Silent Hill 4 was and always will be my favourite in the whole series. It's a game that is not fun to play... on purpose. It's a game that i can even call A Game that is close to being A Horror Game Ideal. It is one of the most stresfull and panic and anxiety inducing games with a c o n s t a n t tension, especially after The Room shits itself and become filled with ghosts. And it makes me sad everytime someone bashes this game for not understanding its purpose and idea. It is always hertwarming to see someone admiring this game, at least to some extent. Great video mate.
@LegionAdell7 жыл бұрын
Josh JeanJacket Jaeger That part in particular is absolutely brilliant. So unexpected of them to literally take your safe-space away too! There you are playing the game, getting used to the formula of getting as much done in the oppressive otherworld before turning to your safe haven (i.e-apartment) and then all of a sudden you here a crashing noise in the living room. You notice that your health bar isn't refilling anymore. You slowly make your way to the living room to find that the fan has fallen from the sealing. Something is very wrong and you can feel it. In the corner of your eye you can see as head float outside your window. With little else to do you return to the otherworld to finish the stage. It's brutal and you can't wait to end the level. When you do, Henry wakes up in his apartment. Once again you walk outside of the bedroom and towards the living room... and that's when you see it. A face engraved in your wall. Let the hauntings begin mother fuckers!

Lone Survivor did almost every part of this game better other than the story and dialogue. I highly recommend that and while I love Silent Hill and I respect the experimentation behind making The Room the way it is, it's like a joke that isn't funny and people think you didn't get it because you didn't laugh. I got it. I understood every single part in detail it just missed the mark on being as cool as the original, as atmospheric and powerful as 2, or as fun while still dark, and horrifying as 3. That said, it still deserves the name of Silent Hill if for nothing other than the pure artistic courage and risk taking required to make a game like this.

I've been anxiously waiting for this. I'm pretty sure SH4 does more wrong than it does right, but I just really like it. The game is really unpolished, but artistically and atmospherically it's just so awesome. The dungeon crawler revelation was really interesting. Never really thought of it like that. It's so underrated in terms of the horror so I'm glad you brought that up. The game is probably the 2nd scariest game in the series. The really stand out moments are those fucking super creepy ghost introductions where the framerate is super choppy and it looks almost real in a way. This bideo did not disappoint. Super gud.

@LegionAdell7 жыл бұрын
A huge missed opportunity to put Fuck instead of Fin at the end there lol. As for the game itself. SH4 is such an oddball of the main 4 games. It constantly dangles from pleasant to EXTREMELY oppressive. It's weird since when I first played it back in like 2005 I absolutely hated it, and for good reason as like you said, it just isn't fun in some places. But then it picked it back up in 2008 and something otherworldly most of happened because I absolutely loved it from then on. Not even mentioning the story (which imo was always great) but the little things that used to frustrate me at first now I find a rewarding stepping stone. I'd probably give this game a 8.5/10 in general and rank it next to SH1 but not as high as 2 or 3. Still I can't help but wonder if there's a skilled modder out there who can return the tank controls, make some area's dark with a flashlight, return the radio (which I guess is technically there just in his apartment lol) and make some area's foggy outside of just the forest. It would be quite interesting to say the least.
@thorhighheels7 жыл бұрын
I've never actually thought about it much, but the absence of a flashlight does really change the feel of the atmosphere a lot. SH1, 2, and 3 are so insanely dark, and an area like the Prison here in SH4 really would've benefited from being just as dark.

I actually agree with pretty much everything posited here. SH4 is brilliant in its atmosphere and story, and the fucking *trailer* is scarier than most horror games out there, but actually playing it is like pulling off teeth without anesthesia. In a paradoxical way, the game pulls off horror, isolation and frustration so well that it's immensely terrible to play.

Silent Hill 4 is a weird outlier. I'm glad it exists and that I experienced it when I was still young enough to get scared by games without being on acid/shrooms but the decision to make the combat a bigger element was a misstep in my opinion. Look at SH2 for example or SH1: the combat is awkward AF but I don't care because unlike Resident Evil where dealing with the monsters is a puzzle in itself (ammo management, deciding what you can run past instead), SH monsters are more to add challenge and a sense of vulnerability. The monsters are supposed to be scary in RE too and sometimes are but in Silent Hill their design is true to psychological horror: less movie monster, more existential dread with every detail having purpose upon scrutiny... like some monsters being sexual or some being enormous, castrating brutes. They did the room very well in 4, though, and there is a lot you can miss in a single playthrough (not sure if you even can see it all) so two people could talk about what was scariest and have no idea what the other is talking about despite both beating it.
@alteredstates9273 жыл бұрын
I did a speech for communications class on Silent Hill 2 and its biggest themes and I had like ten minutes... I had to chop it down so much that all I really got to cover was what he did to his wife, what guilt is doing to him, etc. Nothing about Maria and the unhealthy fantasy, the sexy nurse doll monsters, Pyramid Head, the other tested characters Eddie/Angela and their themes (bullying/violence/rape/suicide) or Laura and the path to redemption... or even just the really general stuff like psychology (modern and old-school metaphysical) and gods and stuff. I think I could talk about that game for an hour and not lose momentum.

Good review, I agree that the main problem is that this game just isn't fun. Having to backtrack constantly because a key takes up as much space in your inventory as a baseball bat and those ghosts really make it a chore (but you can nail them to the ground with some swords later on I dunno if you know) and I don't think they intentionally made the game tedious silent hill 3 had suffering and melancholy and it was a blast. I also got the worst ending because I didn't help that girl I thought she was supposed to fidget all the time :) This game has no replayability why would anyone want to torture themself with that subway level again, silent hill 4 is as fun as washing dishes..
@thorhighheels8 жыл бұрын
I found this neat little tips and tricks guide online, that stated things about the additional usages for the Holy Candles, and also about pinning the ghosts to the ground. I only managed to that with the female ghost in the subway though. It took about a billion tries for some reason, and with the flaming ghost I just kept on dying, so I figured I'd leave him be. Which was a bad idea, as he kept floating around in all levels after that. I loved that, it was great >_> Eileen also died for me in the end. I knew about "healing" her using Holy Candles, but even then, I have no idea how someone's supposed to have enough of those to be able to do that. Not on a first time run anyway. Felt a bit salty about it afterwards. But I have grown to appreciate what it tried to do over time. Don't think I'll ever replay it either though haha
@CommissionerC7 жыл бұрын
If you ever replay it: There are five "Swords of Obedience" in the game that can be used to pin down ghosts, coinciding with the number of special ghosts that correspond to the levels. It's been too long to remember valid strategies other than Andrew, the fat guard in the water prison level, being a pain to pin down but easiest to avoid. If you want the good ending, don't equip Eileen with a weapon. Try to cheese the game by getting her stuck in spots that seem save and keep to long range melee weapons for yourself. Final boss is relatively easy even if Eileen may have taken some damage when you got all your ammo left for it. Keep all your excorcismal items at home for use when the hauntings start so the apartment stays relatively save.

Out of 2, 3, 4 which game did you actually enjoy the most? How would you order them?
@thorhighheels8 жыл бұрын
3 is my fave, but I'd say 2 is the better game objectively. Three reuses some stuff from two, can be a bit confusing because of it being a direct sequel to the first one, and also drags on just a tad right near the end imo. Whereas two is just the perfect little package. It only lasts about 5 hours, which is just right I feel, and there aren't really any bits that I don't look forward too when replaying or anything like that. And 4, as I said, is very experimental. Not bad at all, but just a bit too weird to go around recommending to people. As for ordering, do you mean like, how I would purchase them online? (which I do through ebay cause fuck going outside) Or like, how I would rate them? The ORDER in which I would put them, basically. (which is 2 = best / 3 = second best / 4 = iz ok)
@Joyless8 жыл бұрын
Sweet. Yeah that is what I meant because you mentioned that 4 was the scariest so I wondered how that would factor into how much you enjoyed it.
@thorhighheels8 жыл бұрын
Ah okay. Well 2 isn't really scary at all. It's more so depressing then anything. 3 has some really terrifying moments, but isn't as in your face about it as 4. This game really should have been it's own title. If you look at them naked/bareboned/ for-what-they are, Yamaoka's ideas are incredibly original but they just don't quite fit together. Try this Gedankenexperiment on for Size: Remove the title....no Remove any association this game has with Silent Hill and try to be objective about the game...as objective as one can. Now that you've done that try to black out the strings that connect everything together, you know the "bad" parts. You should notice that a substantial portion of the game remains though admittedly less than 50%. Now take that remainder and put a different"Scenario writer" on the task and you'd probably have something that can stand on it's own legs. I know that would require many heavy layers of paint. The whole game could use a texture overhaul. But you'd have a classic I've no doubt in my mind

Pardon me, but I just found this video in summer of 2022. It takes some balls to make a game INTENTIONALLY oppressive, depressing, lonely, and just plain "I don't wanna be here". But I think that's the message Team Silent wanted the player to feel. Henry barely speaks, and I think he's supposed to be some kind of self insert character. It makes sense, then, that the devs would try to make you feel what Henry would feel in that situation. I don't think it's pulled off particularly well, but at least they tried. And that begs for a certain amount of respect. Henry is a very stoic character who delivers his lines with all the personality of a piece of cardboard, so I don't feel particularly like he's my avatar in the game. When someone dies a horrible bloody death in front of him, it barely registers on his face. I really think they should've either made a main character with personality and a story to tell (Like Heather), or made it completely first-person and eliminated any traces of Henry or a protagonist other than yourself.

Did you know that this game was going to be a different horror IP for Team Silent, but half way through, Konami decided to rebrand it as a Silent Hill game for brand recognition.

did you know that's actually not true, and was actually intended to be a spin off set in the same universe, and therefore part of the franchise, but they decided on making it into a mainline game?

The thing I hated about silent hill 4 is that a lot of the monsters were given shitty stock sound effects that really break the immersion. I've heard that yowl the dogs make in like 4000 other games and it's become stale as stale as the bread from Pompeii.

I was so excited to play this after silent hill 1 to 3 but have to say it's one of the most disappointing games I've ever played. So many of the monsters were poorly designed both visually and mechanically. Wallmen knocking you back causing inconvenience rather than fear, large mosquitoes, large grey strings... and my favorite... the patients that burp everytime you hit them... like what happened? The sound design in silent hill 1 to 3 was phenomenal. Hitting an enemy felt visceral. In this game they just repeat the same noise everytime you hit them... and you rarely find yourself running away in fear, especially because of the massive escort mission the second half of the game becomes. There's no tension in this game. It tries to get inside your head but those psychological scares are so few and far between they felt ineffective. It's boring and a big hassle to play. I only finished it because I loved the first three so much.

Twin victims were the only real banger designs, unfortunately. Though I think the Richard ghost is also kind of freaky.
