Team Silent fully understood that the unknown, imagination and tension is more scary than anything they can show and throw at the screen. That's the difference in the "sticking hand into the hole"-scenes between the games. Not to mention their sound design. It's also a good example in the long staircase scene from Silent Hill 2. "Nothing happens". But playing it was damn scary, due to sound, imagination and tension.

I still find it so rich that Double Helix acted like they knew what was best for the series, shit talking the combat of the older games and saying they always sucked. Yet they couldn't realise that whether you like it or not, the design choices were very deliberate for its limitations and the type of games they were. Not to mention they couldn't keep consistent with the lore and just picking out stuff from the movie, regardless of whether or not it fit. I really wish they dropped the "Silent Hill" title and maybe just called it Homecoming, they had some interesting ideas and when they weren't reusing old designs, they were capable of making their own brilliant designs, maybe it would have sucked less if they didn't make a SH game.

I'm sure they had good intentions. Their studio was also bought out twice during development I think (or something along those lines), so I don;t know how smooth things went for them. Though seeing the interviews leading up to it's release, they do seem kinda cocky. But then that was kinda par for the course with the western SH games. The shit talking that took place leading up to the HD Collection still frustrates me.

ThorHighHeels I could maybe see good intentions with reusing monsters from SH2 and ideas from the movie, but it was salt in the wounds when they shit talked deliberate design elements from older games and then their game ended up being much less refined and nuanced. I know studios don't usually expect buy outs, but its all the more reason not to trash the people who came before you. Its been a long time since the stuff with the fans gunning for Tom Huelett's blood, I vaguely remember him saying things with good intentions, but the fans got furious about a lot of stuff he said. I can't remember if it was salty fans or he was being an idiot.

It is funny seeing this game's combat is with all that jank and the like and then taking one good look at Silent Hill 4: The Room for comparison. Sure the combat for The Room might seem basic but that looks a lot better and a lot less jank than what Homecoming had, and it didn't even put you through Silent Hill beyond just going through a woods with an orphanage and a prison within a lake.

Silent Hill Homecoming as a gateway drug really does seem to be what they were going for. However, the game deviated so far from the original games in style and tone that it angered a lot of the original fans. Perhaps it would've worked out if they could pull off something like Resident Evil 4 where it maintains an old school feel, while trying out a more action oriented and self aware approach. It probably doesn't matter too much though since the Homecoming seems to be a whole load of jank.

This was actually my second entry into the series, with downpour being my first. Having played all of them now over and over again as it has become my favorite franchise, i gotta say, i actually enjoy homecoming. Its kinda like....if silent hill is an independant psychologixal thriller, homecoming is a big hollywood huge budget remake that totally misses the point, but is fun if you go in expecting that imo.

LegionAdell I was unnecessarily hostile in my last post. I apologise, & take that back. However I'd still argue it is SHV. Lots of people ignore the fact that Silent Hill is finished. It's no resident evil or dead space. The main story ended since SH3. You can only have a clueless idiot wandering into a ghost town on rinse/repeat for so long. I personally prefer SH4. It's my favourite in the whole franchise.

You're right, SH neared its end with 3, though I personally think there are still ways to keep it fresh and inventive. Case and point SH4. I just hope that if Konami is serious about continuing even after canceling Hills like they say, they get someone's who know what they're doing. Otherwise best just to let it die and stop milking it with pachinko's and stuff.

Nice video man! In fact i started to replay this game a day before you updated this video, so i kind waited to finish it before watch your review. This game was the first silent hill that i played, i was like 13 to 14 years old, it worked, got me into this franchise. After learning more about the older games and stuff, i realized how homecoming was a mess in concept by using monsters and elements from silent hill 2 etc. Now that i played basically the entire franchise, except downpour(i played some hours when it was release, but it felt strange, so i just stopped, but i'm going to try it again, just to have a opinion about it) I decided to revisit homecoming to see how bad it was, or maybe the fanbase were just exaggerating. Well i dont think the game is bad at all, but i can't ignore that the game fails a lot, most of the time for trying to be the classic ones, mimicking several things. As a gamer i really enjoy quite polished gameplay experiences, but at same time i do enjoy a lot of survivor horror games, and most of them fails in a very deep and if i may say so almost unforgivable way. As i was playing the silent hill games, i kind started all of them in the hardest difficulty available, by doing that i was often short of bullets, basically having to deal with the monsters using melee combat, and....that sucked sooooooo hard in all of them. Always bothered me how limited the player approach was, several times leading to unnecessary blows received, making you use all of your med kits etc. Leaving aside all the poor design choices, and basically all the bad shit done, homecoming at least allowed me to go throught several situations without taking any damage, not saying that the combat is entirely good, just that it offers more approachs, like a situation in the church where two of those big monsters with female legs on their backs shows up to fight you, learning how the combat works, i was able to beat them without using any healling itens, even playing on hard. In the end i'm not crucifying homecoming, at least it gave me the option to fight back properly, shame that he failed in bassically everything else..... ohh and i believe that this time i did the good ending ^^

I don't think Homecoming pails in comparison to the others, I think that it's somewhat more picked on than most because it does things differently. As a huge Silent Hill fan I know that some of the community loves to tear this game apart (Mainly SH2 diehard fans) but most seem to enjoy the game and embrace it into the franchise.

I'm the opposite. This one may not be the worst... but it was the beginning of the "not really Silent Hill" Silent Hill games so I hold a pretty big grudge against it. By the time Downpour came out I didn't even care anymore. In Homecoming they struggled super hard trying to emulate the best of what team silent created, but they never understood the fundamentals of what made the ps2 era games work so well. It kills me to see SH2 enemies in this game. It really shows that they have no idea of what the series was all about.

egoBorder Homecoming is terrible but Shattered Memories is kinda meh. I'd say give it a shot if you're bored. If you've played an SH game post 4, you can kinda predict the story, the characters are a lot less interesting or memorable but considering it kinda plays as a choose your own adventure I guess that was intentional. It's not remotely scary and its chase sequences are the most annoying thing imho. It manages to be pretty subtle surprisingly but its symbolism is a bit more blatant. It also has no obstruction or unique disturbing imagery that the originals were known for. The game can be downright boring at times tbh. However where I found myself enjoying it was the interactivity and the wii motion controls. They work well and the game looks damn good for a Wii title. The puzzles were childs play but they worked it in a way that requires motion as well. Also like %70 of the story can be up for interpretation which is fun if you're a theorist I guess. All in all I'd give it a 5 or 6/10 maybe. I'd never play it again and it is nowhere near my favorites, but it was a unique experience to say the least. I also think it's the best of the western titles.

I thought it was great. Loved the characters, the brutality of it's combat and the much more darker approach to the cult themes the story had in lore. I also love the monster designs and the OST is one of the best in the series. Really there's a lot to love about Homecoming, some just hate on it for certain things they see as flaws or aren't as good as other games, which is fair, but also a lot more love this game than hate it.

Loved the game, loved the story and thought the combat added a new aura of violence that the series didn't give. I also think that while some people tend to think of Homecoming as a weak link, it really suffers more from being a different beast that more surellistic fans don't feel appeals to there love of the franchise. But overall I still very much think this game is one of the most misunderstood greats. In a way all the Silent Hill games have more strengths than negatives and I don't really understand the negatives people give it, but I suppose that's just how some feel towards certain products they put emotion into.

The worst thing in Homecoming in my opinion is story that mix together psychological horror( aka SH 2 rip off ) with SH 1 and 3 Cult based story. It feels so weird like they have list of things that should be in SH game and they were putting stuff that makes no sense. Worst example being piramid head. I also noticed that this game is very linear, i love explaration in previous Silent Hills so that sucks. SH Homecoming in my opinion is really medicore action-horror game and worst SH game.

I must say and do know I am a SH fan since day one...but this SH isn't that bad as many people say...in the beginning I didn't like it and why? Cause I kept comparing it to much with SH 1 2 and 3...but I have played this so many times and I was wandering why...then I realized this game is not bad at all as a SH game...now I can say this game is a very well made SH game...the horror is very well present and the atmosphere is very well done..and the music? It's fantastic!!! :) the story is actually very good and deep...I can admit this Silent Hill is in my top 5 of SH games...and the combat system is another thing where many people have complains about but I know for a fact that when you get a hold of it it's actually very handy. Enemy design is also not that bad in compare to SH downpour for example...and I know many have complains bout the fact that pyramid head shouldn't even be there cause he represented James in SH 2...but the way they used him in this game is very interesting...he is the one that punishes Alex allthe way through the game and the way that is made is imo very well done. So yeah that's my opinion...I love this SH game. They did atleast a good job to catch the atmosphere we love about a SH game

Homecoming was the first SH I played, and it wasn't even intentional. Mom bought us The Simpsons The Game from a sketchy store in Colombia but apparently someone swapped the disks I thought it was cool and intriguing and kind of scary, and the story didn't seem so shitty since I didn't played any other game before that. Even my mom was kinda engaged with the horror, tho she kept saying it was diabolical and we shouldn't be playing that lol

I agree almost entarely on everything, except a line on the story. Murphy being guilt was never intended to be the plot, so that's why it happens in the first few minute. The point of the story is about recognizing the consequences of his deeds, which Murphy never did. And he is not the real protagonist on my point of view. But that being said, I enjoyed it very much. More than Homecoming and I appreciated the effort. Even though the "fast travel" subway bugged at some point and forced me to backtrack the city without the shortcut. Which was tedious as hell.

It had it's moments. Sometimes it would overwhelm you with enemies which some of the other games don't do. And I liked the hell house part. But story wise it was stinky.

Yeah the hell house was a cool idea, but the experience was ruined for me, as the game sometimes doesn't tell you when you've solved a puzzle until after you back out. So I got stuck on a puzzle I had already solved, thinking I was doing it wrong somehow. The only part of this game I really liked was the Prison. It was still quite linear, but I really liked how the lighting worked there to make it atmospheric. It actually felt like I was exploring, going in and out of the cells, and reading notes left by the prisoners and stuff. It wasn't a very combat heavy section either. If the entire game was like the jail or the house, so more puzzles and exploring and less combat, I totally would've enjoyed it.

I'm a big fan of SH since the first game and I don't hate this one, to be honest I consider it a good Resident Evil game... Sounds weird, I know, but as a SH game it sucks, is a mess, a horrible mess... But when I was playing it I had this strange familiar feeling like if I was playing RE, I love both franchises, I've been following them for years... Both of them are considered survival-horror, but they are very different from one another... RE is a SURVIVAL game with horror on it, the story is very straightforward, "logical" and easy to comprehend there is a virus that create monsters and you have to survive using the scarce resourses, it was scary thanks to the survival aspect, the spooky scenarios, the horror b movie type story and of course because mutant plants, sharks and zombies are scary... SH used to be more focus in horror, psicological horror. The survival in SH is almost unexistant, there is plenty of resouses in the game to beat it 3 times.. IN HARD MODE!!! The meele combat and evading is way more easy than in RE which allows you to save resourses... But the horror in SH was much more deep, it was some sort of Rorschach test for horror, there was a phrase in the trailer of the game " What is happening to SH?"... And even to this day people still arguing about it, it was so vague with everything that the UFO and Dog endings make a lot of sense if you think about them... I love the detail in the creatures, in the game they call them monsters or demons, is so ambiguous you can believe that they are whatever you want them to be, in RE the monsters are weapons and they even have names... Team Silent just said f€&k the survival, let's focus on the HORROR... And they did it right... SH Homecoming is a good survival-horror game... Damn! if you dress it as a RE, it would be an awesome RE... I think the problem of this game is that it is under the name of SH... It feels like another genre...

This was the first Silent Hill game I played and I actually did like it. Sure it was a dumb action game but the journey you go on, the places it takes you and the bosses you fight at the very least to a newcomer were very enjoyable. At the very least the fucked up monster designs were a breath of fresh air from anything else I'd played before. And lucky for me, it being the worst in the series the games only got better when I played through them.

You really didnt like the story? I loved it. Next to the Room it was one ov my favorites. The town's four main families sacrificed a chosen kid to satiate the old gods & keep the cult in silent hill @ bay. But Alex murdered his little brother when he was the chosen sacrifice & screwed everything up, & then went nuts & lulled himself into believing he was in the military when he was actually insane whilst wearing his father's dog tags. I thought it was great & liked fighting cultists for once. The graphics were kinda crap but the PS3 did just release

I like this game because of the graphics compared to the ones before it. I liked the enemies getting cut marks when you slice them and I enjoy the bosses and getting the laser gun. First SH w aim controls so I guess i just stuck with it. I beat played and loved SH123 but I SEE the hate and understand it. But i even find it fun sometimes to break the game or exploit things. Just enjoy it for what it is man. As far as using accidental health...pay more attention and it won't keep happening.

From the creatures that appear and the overall level design it's clear the team had no clue what silent hill was. They just filled it with misguided family service much like the movies. PYRAMID HEAD CAN NOT APPEAR OUTSIDE THE EVENTS OF SH2.

Excellent review! I could have forgiven the really shitty story and the pathetic, laughable animations (a certain person getting killed at the end during a choice) if the combat was decent. But fuck the hitboxes. the shark type enemies grabbing you from 5 metres away. I seriously HATE the combat in this game. One of my all time worst mechanics.

The combat is really bad, indeed. Honestly, I feel that if the combat wasn't so obnoxiously present, I likely would've enjoyed it. Like, in the same way that I enjoyed Shattered Memories. Just an atmospheric exploration game with minor spooks. I would be down with that.

HC is terrible mainly due to it being a rehash of Silent Hill 2 in a number of ways, the focus on combat, the poor story, the recycling of monsters, the lack of creativity and symbolism behind the new monsters, the bugs and glitches, terrible characters, the fact it doesn't take place in Silent Hill, the unjustifiable appearance of Pyramid Head and overall general failure of understanding the Silent Hill universe and the town itself.

Its not a bad game. I took it for what it was and that was something to do in between playing other stuff. Now, Downpour... that was some hate-fuck of the highest echelon.

This game is horrible. I've played some very average PS3 games, finishing many of them. But this? Yeah f*ck Homecoming. Uninspired level design. Uninspired monster /enemy design. Not scary at all. Terrible, sluggish combat. Just awful. Honestly gave it a try, but after a few hours... "Nah f*ck this. I've got wayyy better games that actually deserve my time. This is crap."
