While I agree that SH2 and SH3 are better, I would say that Silent Hill 1 is by far scarier. That grungy look and the great sound design make it extremely scary to me

Not exaggerating, Silent Hill changed my life. It inspired my interest in horror in general, got me into Twin Peaks and Lovecraft, and greatly influenced my fiction writing. I still tense up when I hear warning sirens (because I played the game when I was definitely too young). A game has never scared me more than the part where you are traveling to the school at night, in complete darkness because you have no choice but to leave your flashlight off because there are monsters everywhere, and you have to run because you can hear dozens and dozens of dogs and flying beasts chasing you and your radio will NOT STOP RINGING. Good times.

Sirens still get me too. And SH1 was really the start of horror for me as well. Then alone in the dark, carrier, anything horror I could get my hands on. Still never seen anything of Twin Peaks yet.

I think there were a couple of things that wasn't well cover in this review and i'd like to mencion. The first one is that the history is quite more strange and clever than what it looks like in the surface. Particulary the secrets that can be found taking the path of the good ending, that puts in perspective that the cult stuff it's not the central conflict that connect to most of the characters. The drugs issue is quite suggestive having in mind the turistic nature of Silent Hill. Also the traumatic experiencies from alessa are quite subtle but really important, being one of the strong influences for SH2. The other thing that i feel is better made in this game over the rest of the saga is the town it's self. I remember that the first time i played SH2 it was quite disappointed to feel that the town was kinda dead in comparison with this one, wich is full of references and details about the world and influences from Team Silence. Anyway, great channel, and sorry about my english, greatings from Chile.

You have got to try to play this stealthy, radio off, lights off (only turn them on when you need to see the map and think it's safe), and WALKING past the monsters, and I bet your opinion will change for the better. The cranky controls work wonders for this type of gameplay, they really help increasing tention. I usually do this and by the end of the game, I normally only have 3 or 4 enemy kills, probably just the bosses. This is something I was never able to truly do in SH2 and SH3, which makes the original SH my favorite in terms of gameplay.

Just finished SH4 a moment ago, my second playthrough after 5 or 6 years. It's such a weird game, stuff of nightmares at times really, it feels like a big fever dream, which makes it a really cool game. BUT, unlike the other three, it's damn hard and frustrating, I sure don't want to play that bloody thing again.
@Fakan

@@dmmnjaws I wish I could get into playing 4 again, but I agree, it's just so frustrating. The ghosts are poorly implemented and Eileen is... just terrible. Give her a weapon and she will keep slapping ghosts until she's dead; get a few inches too far away when changing rooms and welp, she's nearly dead and completely possessed for the rest of the game.
@dmmnjaws
@dmmnjaws 5 жыл бұрын
@@Fakan I went for the best ending, but even trying to take care of Eileen, and using the candles on her before picking the [spoiler] cord, she almost, ALMOST died at the end. Yeah, the best ending, is freaking hard, I managed to get it but still... I think it was the last thing I had to do with the game and I was done with it. :D But it's interesting cuz, I played all games back to back stopping on Origins, trying to get the best ending on all the four original games, for the past two weeks, but really trying to see everything there was to see. I played them all before but never finished Origins, so i thought finishing an sh game I never finished would be a pretty awesome end to an sh marathon. You know, they're all special in some way, and sh4 is no exception, upon finishing, I consider it to be the most disturbing of all games. I mean, the thematics are so unfamiliar and unreal... And was really happy after that to experience a somewhat normal sh game. (I'm not afraid to admit it, I loved origins for it's own reasons too. To me, it's not on par, or close to the original games, but was still enjoyable, because the otherworld designs were really cool, the levels were fun, if youwere a little careful not to get lost, and themonster and boss desings (especially the boss designs) were pretty cool, and i think it kinda respected the original games, *cough* unlike Homecoming *cough* . Also it brought back that stealth gameplay in the dark, radio off, I loved so much on the first game and was never quite the same on the following games... )

@@dmmnjaws "trying to get the best ending on all the four original games" So: Harry subverts the exploit at the beginning to catch up with Cheryl. Problem solved, off home! James learns that it was all a dog all along, adopts the dog, and furthermore actually finds Ernest, who is cheered up by the dog and stops being so sad and playing thrown-voice pranks on passers-by. Heather fails to control her hatred and attacks Claudia, causing paradise to actually happen and... we don't get to see it, but it turns out it's actually pretty great after all, not at all like Douglas predicted. And finally, James actually goes to visit Frank, who newly-unignored chucks away the box with the umbilical cord and sells the complex to a development company. In the meantime Henry finds the forest world he was in at the time actually just becomes the ordinary forest which he can escape from and isn't being chased by ghosts in. Him and Jasper go for a chocolate milk and the power of shared dorkdom gradually erodes his severe shyness. Or y'know... I like the Rebirth ending too. He gets his wife back! :D awww

Apparently the huge long pauses between voice acting segments were to do with the instructions the voice actors were given in how to record them. I don't think they were left in there deliberately, it was something more to do with load times or something like that. Old tech, huh. When things like loading up the next piece of sound sample were an actual issue. I'm still... not entirely sure WHY that was an issue. But it does seem plausible from back then, and it's what I heard was the problem. If it ever gets actually remade, I'd honestly be happy with just a version with those pauses taken out and no other changes. Although perhaps nobody should be thinking of remaking it because well, with this series in particular, we've all seen how that turns out.

I feel like the hardware limitations were intentionally or unintentionally utilized to add to the experience. From the awkwardness in the dialogue, the draw distance, the jittery motions, the low polygon graphics, etc all made it a better horror title

So, most of your critics is about the Grafics, in a Game which is from 1999? Of course the newer Games look better. For me, the first Silent Hill Game is the best in the Series. I love the Story, the Music, the Characters, everything. Yes, the other Games of the Franchise are great as well, mostly 2 and 3, but for me, the first Game is the greatest ever. I have beaten it at least a dozen times and it never gets old. But: great Video, as always!

This game wasn't even really a looker when it was new. The story and atmosphere made up for that to a certain extent. The controls and animations were a bigger problem for me than the graphics. I haven't played it since the late 90s though so I'd probably complain about how ugly it is too if I played it today. I have a hard time going back to anything from the ps1 era that isn't 2d or has prerendered backdrops like FF7,8,9 or RE 1, 2, 3. Those early polygonal games aged as well as Jincos and frosted tips.

SH1 kills it in terms of monster behaviour. It's not intricate by any means, but it's the right mixture of varied and aggressive enough to actually threaten. You end up learning particular things, like I love the whole thing between the dogs, the pterodactyls and the humpers, with learning whether or not you can run away from them and how close they have to be to actually catch you. That kind of archetype coverage is lost in a lot of games that are merely designed for enemies to follow a simple linear difficulty ramp (with usually too many of them and far too dependant on your character progression as to which ones show up and when). The future games didn't do quite so well either. I found SH2 initially particularly jarring by contrast (excepting PH), until it won me over with its considerable non-combat-system-based charms. But seriously, as visually fun as the lying figures, mannequins and nurses are, they're all pretty similar and pretty ignorable. Mandarins were a good variation but even more easily ignorable. Only the doormen really felt the slightest bit threatening. It was quite a stark difference on the first play. Homecoming might have had some good enemy behaviour variation if its actual basic combat system wasn't the absolute worst thing ever. Downpour's monsters were way too similar in design to be interesting, even if their behaviours varied a bit... with the exception of the doll monster, I'll give them that one. That was good. Shattered Memories's combat was hampered by the fact that it wasn't you choosing to run, making it less of a fear thing and more like "suddenly, a running race occurs!". Nice plot twist but definitely one of the least scary horror games. Origins had a decent enemy variety. That was a good attempt. Still, none beat the original. In monster designs they definitely do, but in monster behaviours they never reach that level again.

PS1 game, graphics were expected to be what they were at the time. I've played MGS and the pixel faces were no better. Same with all the RE ones. It was what was out there in those days, Iwe can't truly compare the graphics. Also, you didn't comment on the soundtrack. This SH is absolutely chilling if you play with sounds (beyond the voice acting :D) . The Background effects/sounds and melodies are just disturbing. I'm sure more than one here remembers the school's courtyard or Otherworld Alchemilla's bgm.

Awesome review! I agree with most of your points, I also dislike the cult-based storyline but I'm glad the game is ambiguous enough to let you put as much emphasis on that as you want. SH2 is everything I wanted SH1 to be, with all its dramatic depth and narrative quality, but I wasn't disappointed with SH1. It is a great game, and truly scary. It has truly masterful camera shots and a fantastic atmosphere, fueled by its oppressive soundtrack.

Been playing this game since i was a younglin, but even I have hard time recommending the first game. I love it dearly but it's not for the faint of heart. The controls are even frustrating for me at times. I adamantly do agree that the game has aged very well in a very odd manner. I actually don't think voice acting is terribad, i think its how everyone has a really long pause in between each sentence that makes it sound really off.

+DatOMillsGuy Yeh. This is pretty much what I mean with "holds up as a survival horror game". Overall, I wouldn't recommend it. But over the years I've found that people who legitimately enjoy survival horror, seem to be attracted to dated and contrived bullshit. And this game has plenty of that. I love it though! It's definitely not my fav, but I totes don't regret playing it at all.
@petersutor5845

A bit late to this discussion, but the really long pauses are a hardware limitation. The pause is the buffer loading in a new line of dialogue, and they didn't have the memory nor the necessary processors to store more given the fully 3D environment. While the cult stuff may seem very "meh, you can do better" I urge you to read the following (and excuse the wall of text) response I gave in another thread where people were talking about the merits of the cult in Silent Hill. It may change your opinion on it: (Copy-Pasta below) You know what's crazy about the cult stuff in Silent Hill? It's all bullshit. Smoke and mirrors. It seems that Silent Hill warps the rules of reality based on the strong emotions and memories of people. The only reason any of the cult stuff is happening is SOLELY because they believe in that stuff so fervently that Silent Hill makes it a reality. It's a cruel feedback loop of drug-induced (White Claudia) hallucinations becoming real by one's own belief in them. This is why the visions of Paradise between Dahlia and Claudia are so drastically different. Claudia viewed the cult very differently than Dahlia and both influenced how it looks so strongly. I feel like this concept is mostly lost on people who play the game because Silent Hill only hints at its own powers, and it can take a lot of theory crafting and research to reach the above conclusion. You know why Harry can kill "God" in Silent Hill 1? Or that God dies on its own even if you don't fight it? It's because the people who believed in that stuff literally died/are dying in that same boss fight and their influence on Silent Hill faded away (Dahlia and Alessa). Harry most definitely doesn't believe nor truly understands what the cult is selling, so he can kill it quite easily. The exact same thing happens with Claudia and Heather in Silent Hill 3. And if you think about it, it's exactly what happens in Silent Hill 2! James cannot kill Pyramid Head nor get rid of Maria until he realizes that it's all self-created bullshit as well, just like the cult, and mans up to his actions. Even Silent Hill 4 is the same! You cannot kill Walter unless you play his game, and defeat him where and when HE believes he is defeatable, since the whole Otherworld is solely under his influence. The people who think the cult stuff is shallow material in Silent Hill typically don't realize the above concept. The ooga-booga cult in Silent Hill is literally a veil hiding the true horror of Silent Hill: what people can do with it. Silent Hill 2 is horrifying because it explores what can be done with the power of Silent Hill. James literally creates a human being with his own memories and wishes from his own psyche (Maria), and puts himself through an eternal hell (notice how some endings imply a doomed-to-repeat-this-ness and that all the dead bodies in SH2 are dressed like James, because they are past James' attempts at progressing through his problems). Silent Hill 1, 3, and 4 are horrifying because you witness what happens when truly disturbed and violent individuals take control of its power and suck in and trap anyone remotely related to it, like a singularity. You know, call me crazy, but I think Shinji Mikami understood this stuff and based a lot of The Evil Within on the whole "power through the influence of belief" on the metaphysical level. There is clearly a lot of inspiration drawn from Silent Hill in that series.

While I agree that the cult plotline isnt great I'm pretty sure it was created with the belief that Harry is already dead. Everything that's happening is a fictive creation within his personal hell and the creatures are more so symbolic of his childhood and inner fears. The bad ending is indicative with showing Harry dead in a car after the credits roll.

Video's old as dicks by now, but it's fairly spot on! It's my least favorite of the first three games, but it brings a very different "what the shit is happening and what am I looking at?" brand of horror to the table, in part thanks to the hardware limitations. I kinda have to disagree on the difficulty aspect, though. On Hard, the school part is almost frustratingly hard, but it can be cheesed by walking around with your flashlight off. As soon as you get the hammer in the Hospital, the rest of the normal monsters are absolutely a cakewalk, since the hammer (obviously) has no ammo, attacks fast and in a wide arc, stunlocks everyone, and kills even nurses in like 3-4 hits. I can see someone getting real frustrated with the school monsters on higher difficulties though and not bothering with going forward - I know I did on my first run.

***** Yeah, I know. It's just weird to be a fan of a game series when you haven't played all the games. And I have played Shattered Memories (I listed it as "SM" in my comment) and I really did like it! I know a lot of SH fans seem to not like that game because of how different it is but in my opinion it being different made it really great. I also loved Downpour, which seems to be a minority opinion compared to most SH fans. But I just really loved it's side quests. I only wish the developer had had more time to flesh out the main story. And I have SH3, just haven't gotten around to playing it yet, but hopefully I will soon!

+Gary Morris I thought Shattered Memories was great, sort of surprises me when someone says they didn't enjoy it. Either way though, have you played Downpour? I thought that was probably the weakest in the franchise, from what I've played.

I bet you that the original Silent Hill still controls better than Silent Hill Homecoming.

If you tightened up the turn radius and slowed the run down just a bit, it would honestly have the greatest tank controls.

To be honest, people who like 2 and hate on 1 because of "muh cult is boring," miss the point of the game, and you played them out of order. You really expect a game that came out right next to Dino Crisis to have Silent Hill 2 levels of character depth and voice acting, you are just not being realistic to the times. The game is not about a cult. There is one cultist in the game. People who say its about a boring cult are blending the film with it in their memory. Its about the abuse of Alessa, the monsters, reality becoming obscured, and the flip flop nature of what is happening on first playthrough. Is the little girl evil? Is it the crazy woman who seems to be helping me? Is this a dream? The story however is fairly complex and not told directly, so it makes it one of the most ambitious story games at the time, with some faults(the boiler fire lore being locked by region). But Silent Hill 1 feels uniquely about an investigation of the town, uncovering the torture of this girl, the drugs, the nature of the monsters, and the mysteries that surrond it, tying in the whole idea of completing puzzles, rewarding observant players with better endings, and the story's ending even to the unobservant player still leaves enough clues, emotional moments, and gameplay spectacle to impact the player.

+Knut Kniffte Yeah the last two or three puzzles really surprised me with how hard they were. Hadn't to many problems with the rest of the game though.

My friend,this game is old,of course the graphics are not so good,plus this game is fully 3d graphics unlike Resident evil 1,2,3 with "photo graphics". The scenario is actually very deep maybe you didn't fully give your 100% attention
