Unlike the other guy in the comment, I was really impressed with the game. It made me thing that what studios other than Team Silent should've done was to create their own interpretations. And with a writer such as Sam Barlow, you couldn't go wrong. As a reinterpretation of Silent Hill 1, from another studio, it was very impressive. As a horror game, this was a fine experience, with problems for course (as with any horror game) This, to me, is the best non-Team Silent Silent Hill game. Your comment became mute the second you said Sam Barlow is a good writer, we're talking about the same guy who wrote Origins and Origins' story is a complete mess. SM is a boring game, another copy of SH2 story (and several mechanics), there is nothing scary about the game, once you do one chase you saw pretty much everything "scary" the game has to offer, being chased by a random naked dude is not scary in the slightness. Also, this game has NOTHING to do with the first game, is not a "reimagination"... is a complete different game and a bad one to say the least.

I don't care about how generally-good or generally-bad a writer's reputation makes them think they are in general. What matters to this game was how good this game specifically was. And it had that twist, and that was about all it had. Was a great twist. But wasn't a Silent Hill game, and wasn't a reimagining of Silent Hill 1 at all. It was just its own thing entirely that riffed off the initial setup and nicked all the character names. I don't see how it deserves such high praise for that! On its own it's a walking simulator with occasional hurry-up races. I would struggle to call it a horror game. As a walking simulator it's not that great either as the atmosphere, consistently is just... normalistic. Not that that can't work but it wants to mean something. And when the really arbitrary "psychological" wallpaper switches get in the way of what it even ends up looking like (because you did something that constitutes normal gameplay behaviour such as checking all things in case you miss a thing), it has even less opportunity to mean something, and does basically nothing with it. You can cut out the entire game, pretty much, up to the ending. Not a single memorable area or moment. Really flat and disappointing in that way. Some cop wrongly assumes you killed some lady, eh... some annoying couple are having an argument between each other and using you as a go-between, eh... some sadistic asshole quack is pretending to be a therapist, eh... why do I care about any of these random people again? OH, because you called them the same names as characters I actually cared about? Well, so what? They're absolutely nothing like the same characters, so all you have are names. The music's good, even if a little subdued for Akira's work on the series. There's absolutely no atmosphere or stakes for it to slot into, though. It's really, really boring getting it to where it's going, and the way it pretends to psychoanalyze you at the end is even more intelligence insulting than calling a man who throws half-drank glasses of whisky at patients as cavalierly as he throws around baseless smugness qualified or professional. The fact that his methods work... are even surpassed in the old suspension of disbelief by the initial warning screen, now THAT is some laughable wishful thinking. Bloody hell. Beginning with that thing put me in the mind to be critical and suspicious of it from the very start. I mean it's slim pickings but you could pluck the odd good decision or pretty looking piece of scenery here and there I guess. Just way too little of it. The other thing this game gets way too much of a pass for is it calling itself a "reimagining" of SH1 meant that we never got an ACTUAL proper modern capabilities version of SH1. Which is a damn shame, possibly. Risky. But could've been good. But we'll never know, thanks to this game. Take the Silent Hill out of it and it's exactly the same as it is, just without the name value to shift more units. And if that sounds cold then it's only as cold as this experience left me (how fitting). This essentially left me feeling "Okay, that was a thing, bit dull but reasonable in places, dunno why I played it honestly... now where was that Silent Hill game I was thinking of giving a try? Oh what, that WAS it?" It was like channel surfing and catching a random movie you never heard of that had a quirk or two but ultimately wasn't worth the time investment. And then you think aww I missed the thing I was actually trying to remember to watch on that other channel, and go to bed in a mild malaise of shrugging mehness. Good for you if you get more out of it but I honestly can't figure out how.

I can't stress enough how much I like your review of this game, SHSM is my favorite SH game along with SH2. The atmosphere is great and the story is brilliant. The ending is truly heartbreaking. Honestly, I enjoy much more the SH titles that stray from the occult bullshit of an evil cult resurrecting a demon and focus instead of the guilt and grief of the characters and make them walk through their own personal nightmares.

SH at least shares some good qualities with the old games.

i absolute love this one. i don't know why its just made exactly how i like it. the chase scenes, the puzzles, the small choices making your ending go into a direction you don't even see coming. loves.

The Wii version is much better. I thinks one of the few really good motion control games. The way the torch beam follows the wiimote movement. The phone call sound coming from its little speaker (just like a phone) the PS2 version which I've also played lacks these interesting novelties.

Silent Hill Origins on PSP was a good game. SH Home coming was ok and SH Downpour was terrible. Silent Hill book of memories on Vita was a missed opportunity..

Late comment...sorry for that 😊 but cool video. I love the game for what it is. The music is for sure standing out and would it have not been for the music the game would suck ass even more. But like I said I love it for what it is. The reason I love it is because it has a calming vibe thruout (bad english) the game. This game is so relaxed. The music gives relaxed vibes. I do not love it as a Silent Hill game but I love it as a relaxed type of game that takes place in Silent Hill. You can chill and walk the streets and enjoy the music and atmosphere

Shattered memories is not a Silent Hill game they could have made it a new franchise, there is literally nothing here that would make me say it's a silent hill story without using the same names. It was a cheap ploy that worked on people somehow. It had interesting mechanics and a moment or two that were effective but it's feels like a con to call it a Silent Hill game and try to pretend it's a "reinterpretation" and not just a name swap.

This is NOT a Silent Hill game. It’s not a "reimagining" or a even spin-off, it’s some sort of weird fan fiction. The synopsis of this game is radically different from the orginal game it is supposed to "reimagine". The only similarities those two games share are the title and names of some characters and places. Needless to say, the game’s plot and ending have absolutely no bearing to the lore of the franchise.
