Fun fact: "Black Rukia's" design is inspired by her original manga design, in which she would have used a scythe.

yup back in the early days of development when Bleach was suppose to be an old western ghost hunting manga called "Sniped", in which only Rukia, Stark, and Kaien had most of their design kept when transitioning into, what would be "Bleach".

The reason Ichigo is made to remember Rukia first, beyond just him being the MC, is that the director of Bleach animation during this era is infamously known as a hard Ichigo and Rukia shipper who would constantly try to recontextualize their relationship as a blooming romance. As far he is concerned, Ichigo was the absolute most important man in Rukia's life, beyond even Renji and Byakuya.

What worked for me with this one was just how uncanny it was seeing Rukia with these characters that feel like intruders upon her life. I do like the walk down memory lane with Ichigo having to confront many of the major Soul Society antagonists again and under a different light. While I agree that the emotional climax could have been wrapped much neater, the movie as a whole has some fantastic action scenes and is a pleasant reflection on the Soul Society arc. We really feel the gravity of Ichigo and Rukia's effect on the world around them. In a lot of ways, this felt like a companion piece to Memories of Nobody--a contemplation on what the world would be like if you never existed and nobody remembered you. While Memories of Nobody is decidedly more tragic, Fade to Black presents an optimistic outcome. Both movies center their focus on loss and memory, which are hugely important to BLEACH and its overarching themes. After all, Ichigo's driving motivation is borne of the loss of his mother and how he remembers her and the moments of her death. As for smaller, less obvious connections that I liked in this movie--the whole naming of the friends holds massive significance given the importance of names within BLEACH. To give something a name is to give it an identity and a form all its own. You've already seen how false names for Shikai can significantly affect their form and how Ichigo recalling Zangetsu's name from the depths of his soul is what let him manifest his blade. The same is true of Kido, where at least the name must be spoken to make real its effects, and, moreover, we see how a specific preamble chant heightens those effects. Release commands, too, for Zanpakuto, are unique and valuable in ushering in a change to reality, a manifestation of the 'self' that is the blade. Memories of Nobody sees Senna's name forgotten and her existence follows suit. Fade to Black shows us how having even just the names of the dead allow us to remember and hold some piece of them, even if they are physically no longer with us. Finally, it's been mentioned in other comments, but there are early Rukia designs where she uses a scythe, so it's interesting that this memory retcon of a past that truly never was has her return to a weapon she was evoked to have but never came to pass with the canon timeline. Something similar does happen with Senna down the line, far far far later, but it is interesting how these non-canon movies touch upon, interact with, and influence the canon of the manga to come.

I never found most of the BLEACH movies to move my heart in any particular way (especially compared to the original work of the manga), which was contributed by the feeling that the characters sort of just felt off to me. It's really interesting seeing someone else talk about these movies.

I honestly like KON for his uncompromising moral code/philosophy regarding the sanctity of life and the right to live for both himself and others. He was made to be a weapon by people for whom killing or giving the order is as easy as yawning, yet after being declared useless and condemned while surviving by a fluke as other mods met their ends he changed and became the opposite. It's a shame this aspect of his character has been disregarded, more so since only he and Orihime hold true to these values.
@josora1654Ай бұрын
I'd say the reason Renji's ties to Rukia weren't explored more was cause studio pierrot quite loves the Ichigo/Rukia pairing - at least a few head honchos of the production does. It's a bummer that that's how that cookie crumbled but they have a history of doing that kinda shit with Orihime, Sakura and such
@stefangirbea982Ай бұрын
Just something to keep in mind when you eventually watch the fourth movie, Hell Verse: Kubo has personally disavowed any credit for the fourth movie. In a letter attached to a special limited edition of the Hell Verse DVD, he stated that all the ideas that he discussed about being put in the movie were never communicated to higher-ups, therefore most if not ALL of what you see in Hell Verse is not canonical, from movie plot to portrayal of Hell, etc. Wanted to say this just so you are informed when you talk about it.

maybe it does make a bit more of a sense that Ichigo instantly remembers her because even though, yes, you could say that renji had more time with her and so did Byakuya and the emotions they had tied to her were pretty strong, even though her brother doesn't really show it much. for Ichigo Rukia was someone that shook his world in a way that the it seemed unshookable he knew ghosts were a thing but she gave him access to something else, she gave him power to save his family and friends, to be the protector he always aspired to be and you know maybe even most importantly to him she gave him power to fight the thing that killed his mom (tho he's unaware that the fisherman is donesky, guess he nit getting closure with that) and while probably she had more of an effect on Renji's life overall we as people tend to have in the forefront of our mind people who radically impacted us in the shortest amount of time (positively or negatively)
