I saw Cream at Winterland back in ‘67. Clapton was in the middle of one of his long solos and broke a string on his Fools SG. He continued on as if nothing happened. If you didn’t notice the broken string flapping around, you never knew anything happened. I don’t remember if he switched guitars or quickly replaced the broken string.

I couldn’t believe the size of the crowd and not to mention it was televised live!!… No pressure there!!! LOL.. well his solo was amazing, and he is definitely a top level player. Eric Clapton was lucky to have him as part of his ensemble. So kind of Phil to share this experience with you and the channel! You did an awesome job on this interview and can’t wait for part II. I watched this on tv at the time and have admired that nonchalant string break/recovery and Phil's fill in solo for the last 32 years. Interesting to hear Phil's insight on the day. EC's sound back then was amazing - it has a slight chorusy metalluc zing to it that I've always wanted to figure out.

It's good to hear from an experienced, working musician, who has seen the ups and downs, and learned how to roll with things. And Clapton's reaction to the string breaking is great, because you realize that this has happened many times in his career, and it's just part of the overhead of performing live.

Absolutely brilliant insight into the level of craft, professionalism and sheer hard work of top musicians playing without a safety net! Phil was fascinating to listen to. It reminded me so much of Eric (who I've seen live twice many years ago) having to suddenly hand off the second solo to Robbie Robertson of The Band at The Last Waltz, when Eric's guitar strap came adrift. It was seamless. Again, two top players at the top of their game. Now there's an idea for an analysis video!

Jeff Beck mentioned that he originally played a Les Paul because of its fatter tone but when he saw what Hendrix was able to do with his Strat and also had a fat tone as well Jeff decided he would try playing a Strat. Eric Clapton’s custom Strat has pickups with a boosted mid range with a fatter tone as well. Eric’s guitar work on the album Journeyman has quite a powerful tone which demonstrates the sound he was going for.

Man...what hit me right between the eyes was Phil's _tone!_ It was really robust & had this liquid, slightly-upper-mid snarling wail that was just freaken _beautiful._ When Phil laid into those 12th, 14th, 15th fret bends and stuck his superb vibrato in there, it was almost like the sonic equivalent of a gourmet dining experience. His technique and execution were top notch as well, but that tone, & the way Phil used it to enhance the emotional feel of the notes, man that was _tasty!_ I admittedly am a tone freak ( _"If it ain't got that tone, send it home alone!"_ 🤣🤣), and in this video, Phil Palmer gave me a tone as rich as a filet mignon in a 5 star restaurant. I had not heard of Phil before this video, but when I'm done listening here, you best believe Imma be checking out _PHIL PALMER_ to hear anything he has up on you tube.

I love hearing about how the music comes about. The part about the PA being so loud it's causing guitar feedback was fascinating. Wish I could have seen Hendrix live. This is the second time I've heard someone describe the audience staring at Hendrix like he was from another planet, not sure what to make of him. The first, whose identity I'm having a hard time remembering, was someone who was at Woodstock and described a similar reaction from the crowd there.

FANTASTIC video! Anyone who is a huge Clapton fan, such as I, or a guitar god fan in general, will appreciate this video. Phil did a marvelous job of performing an unexpected solo in front of 120,000 people…..I couldn’t even imagine being in his shoes, sheer panic for sure. Phil also gave a great interview in this vid, and watch til the end, cuz Phil saw Hendrix live at Albert Hall in the 60’s and he gives his take on that experience. I saw Clapton live, in concert, during the summer of 1974, when he was only 29 years old…..that memory is etched into my brain forever!

How did Peter Green sustain his opening note on the tune “The Supernatural”? As an EC fan in thoroughly enjoyed Phil’s interview and hadn’t fully appreciated just what a fine musician he is. It must take someone a little special to become an integral element of such a great band of professional players. This has been by far the most enjoyable presentation I’ve seen from you and must say how much I have appreciated this piece of work. Like Phil I saw Hendrix in Bristol which I enjoyed but I don’t think at eighteen years of age I was fully aware of what he was playing. He was on tour with (I think) Loulou & the Lovers, Nice and I do remember Amen Corner didn’t go down too well with the Hells Angels who were sat in the row behind me. I have since become an admirer of Mr Fairweather Low and gained a better understanding of what it was to play behind Mr Clapton. Good presentation and thank you

Love this interview! @11:34, that "subconscious level of taking everything in," a sort of muscle memory freeing your mind to observe nuance, doesn't just allow adapting to something like a string breaking. It's also what turns a band into a single organism, that sense that the players are reading each others' minds, ready for all to pounce on the inspiration from one. Great jazz performances have this going on, but it's fun to see it demonstrated in a loud, raucous blues tune. Also cool to see Phil's style, very distinct from Clapton's, fit right in. Bravo all the way 'round!

Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler, two of my three favorite guitarists, only Vince Gill is missing. I bought and read Phil Palmer's book, "Session Man," and was very familiar with this performance, and to have him comment in real time on a playback of the video was so satisfying. Eric probably had the best live band on the planet and knew the team would step up and shine when it was called for and he was right. This is the kind of content KZbin was made for, and you did it brilliantly! I can't wait for part 2!

I saw Eric and Jimi many times in my life. My Dad was an owner of McCune Audio in San Francisco. He mixed the Monterey Pop Festival. He used the name Mort Feld, even though our name is Firstenfeld. I used Feld also in my audio career. One comment on Jimi's use of feedback. At the Monterey Pop Festival, Jimi had his stack of Marshall's and he used them consciously and accurately as purveyors of feedback. What many people don't realize is that he was also attuned to the stack of Altec speakers on both sides of the stage. He squeezed and cajoled sounds out of the system that will never be heard again. Pure Sorcery.

I am almost 70 now. I had a birds eye view of the evolution of rock guitar virtuosos. I was also a player in the 70's and had "literally" skin n the game. Eric made his appearance with the Yardbirds but learned the basics from folks Like John Mayall. In October 1963, Keith Relf and Paul Samwell-Smith recruited him to become a member of The Yardbirds because Clapton was the most talked about guitar player on the R&B pub circuit. During his 18-month tenure with The Yardbirds, he earned his nickname, Slowhand, and recorded his first albums: Five Live Yardbirds and Sonny Boy Williamson and The Yardbirds. The band also recorded the single, “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl”. But, Eric had not abandoned his serious research into the American Blues. When The Yardbirds began moving towards a more commercial sound with “For Your Love”, he quit. His path in music was the blues. “ Eric looked beneath the surface and explored the roots of rock in American Blues. ” In April 1965, John Mayall invited Eric to join his band, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. With this group, Clapton established his reputation as a guitarist and earned his second nickname: “God”. It came from an admirer’s graffiti on the wall of London’s Islington Tube Station that boldly proclaimed “Clapton is God.” Eric’s time with the band was turbulent and he left for a while to tour Greece with friends. Upon his return from Greece, Eric rejoined the Bluesbreakers. It was during this time that the now classic Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton was recorded. While with the Bluesbreakers, Eric also recorded a one-off four-track session with a band dubbed “The Powerhouse”. This studio band included John Paul Jones, Steve Winwood and Jack Bruce.

More fun stuff about Jimi. I was young at the time of the Monterey Pop Festival, but because of my father's influence I was allowed to be a stage hand. At the time of Jimi's sound check, they didn't show up. My dad being the sound man needed something from the stage approximating what was coming. Me, being the only left handed guitarist in the crew picked up Jimi's upside down strat from the stand and started playing. I am here to tell you now. No bullshit. The strings and action on this guitar were so light that you only had to think about pressing them for them to light up. I have never seen, felt or heard of any guitar or player express the awe that I felt that day.

Awesome. From the string breaking on Eric and how Phil talked about the solo, in front of 120,000 people. Then playing at Buckingham Palace in front of 500,000 people. Then Phil talking about, seeing Hendrix at 14.. just great. On a side note that's how Clapton got the nick name "Slowhand". After he'd break a string back in the day. The audience would clap slowly as he restrung as you probably already know. Claoton didn't have a Phil Palmer to play a solo on queue. It was also great to hear how Phil handled the added pressure of Mark Knopfler waiting in the wings. It's like that old adage, any one can sing in the shower, but let's see you do it on stage. Phil Palmer has been passing that test for decades. Great job Fil and Phil. Peace.

The sets from Clapton & knopfler at that concert are still a big favourite of mine, Back then I had just started to learn the guitar and was heavily influenced by this. Just when I thought clapton couldnt be any cooler in his designer suits and custom Strat he handed the solo over to Phil who was unknown to me at that time and he went straight into it and did a fantastic job, im sure there would be a lot of guitarists that would of gone into panic mode with all the stars around on stage that day. After that for me, Phil got guitar legend status and became the coolest person of the day. I still think that today.

Phil getting the kind of mileage out of one note, Clapton gets out of five or six (not a criticism, rather, a stylistic observation). I enjoy your breakdowns of the technique and talent of wonderful musicians of all kinds. Would you consider analyzing Lawrence? They are an incredibly talented young brother/sister duo. The brother composes, plays piano and sings (sounds a lot like Randy Newman) and the sister sings. And I mean SINGS. She's like a mix of Aretha, Amy Winehouse, Adele, and I don't know who else, but she is a tiny, powerful, perfect-pitched monster of a singer with no fear and incredible stage presence. It's amazing to me they haven't blown up bigger over the past 5 years - I don't think they're into selling out and going the pop route. They're just beginning to get some of the attention they deserve. Check out Lawrence - Don't Lose Sight (Acoustic)

In 2003 I was playing guitar w this guy from Philly at the time , Tommy Conwell ..(he was in a sort of Thorogood, Setzer, Brian Adams camp). Anyway I was invited to his wedding and he asked me to play the ceremony guitar stuff at this tiny church. After playing a couple songs this good looking girl walks in, and here it was Brian setzers girl w him in tow. Sat right in front of me. I hadn't really practiced the tunes much, dialed in standard classical stuff I knew, but wish I had, was always a fan of Setzer.
