Almost everyone that has previously played I like to ask if they would return if an new format was made that reboots the game to play more like it did 10 years ago. Every single one said yes. They would return to a simpler form of the game. This speaks for itself but more than that, the game is in a terrible state for new comers. Its like stepping into the current season of a show thats been airing for 20 years with complex lore and story. Then expecting to understand anything. Of course you would be lost. People didnt watch the OG Yugioh for the card game, they watched the OG Yuguoh for the characters that just so happened to be playing a card game. No one ever brings up what new character arcs or stories they could tell, just like in this video, they always just mention lmao lets use new cards which will be old in a year with how fast YGO soft rotation gets. The videos already fucked when you even suggest Joey not have his sister be his motivation to win. That not only was what made you root for him even against Yugi but allowed his development to naturally go from "Using dueling as a means" to "Truly wanting to improve for the love of the game". I feel like one shouldnt invoke Takahashis's name when the guy clearly loved the story and characters he created over the actual card game. The former should be the focus, not the latter.

I think that if we get a Duel Monsters reboot/remake, the likeliest scenario is a faithful adaptation of the manga. You make great points about how it doesn’t reflect the game of today, but I think that Takahashi’s death may give Shueisha cold feet about any transformative aspects. The industry places a lot of emphasis on the original creators and their wishes, and with Takahashi no longer around to approve things, if they do move forward with a reboot, I could see staying faithful to the manga as a way of preserving his legacy. One anime that got around this was “Itazura na Kiss”, a romance series that never finished due to the sudden death of the author. When the anime was made, the late author’s husband was consulted on how his wife had intended to end the series. Recently, there was also “Berserk”, which has continued publication after Miura’s death, with an assistant taking the helm. So, one benefit of Yu-Gi-Oh! being a large multimedia franchise is that it’s possible that there are people in the system who are seen as someone Takahashi would have trusted. Perhaps to avoid all of those issues, however, they might instead choose to adapt something like OCG Stories, or one of the other ongoing manga?

Keeping things slow and straight to the point with more relatively simple strategies will ease new people (or returning folk) back into the game. Edit: By bringing in a reboot of the anime, they could even have the chance to create new cards for some of the other archetypes being shown. I think it would be cool if they do a different perspective with new characters that will follow them in the same time period as Duelist Kingdom and Battle City, but with a more grounded story (without having to save the world and all that, that's Yugi's job lmao). Imagine a few characters that are invited to the Duelist Kingdom and you follow their story and how and why they are there and we only see Yugi and the gang in passing or in the background in an episode or two as an easter egg. Then next season we follow the main characters into the Battle City tournament. For the cards, we can have some cool new cards that wouldn't be too over-powered but they can be some new support cards for some less used cards in that time. I think this will bring the old fans back into the series because of the beloved arcs of Duelist Kingdom and Battle City being shown from a different perspective, and also maybe new fans that can follow the duels easily without having to be introduced to a lot of different summoning ways or combos, etc. If this goes well, they can continue to create different perspective of new character in the Duel Academy in GX, where they experience the same events as Jaden but they have their own struggles and we follow their story, and the main events from GX are just shown for an episode or two.

I'd love to see them go more into the Vanguard Anime route, where you actually see them open packs, talk about Meta, change Decks, try different strategies etc. Cause Yugi is the "King of Games", but what actually is that? How do you achieve that? For me it would be him actually being someone who can adapt his deck in a way to always counter and win the Meta with unique strategies. Instead the anime always had the "one of new card of the week" thing, were the "main cast" were the characters without any actual strategies. Meanwhile all the villains had decks that actualls were build around a certain type or strategy. That way you could have: Kaiba: The veteran pro gamer who always has the most updated Meta deck/cards and shows us what it's like to be a pro Yugi: Who's good at the game and the underdog who counters the Meta with unique and outdated cards used in new strategies (like how Upstard Goblin suddenly became relevant back then) Joey: Who's more or less representing us. The new dude who thinks the cards look cool but kinda has to get into the game and slowly learn how to actually be competetive and sorta becomes a inbetween Yugi and Kaiba

Shueisha is not gonna allow it. It's not marketable for them. Takahashi alive or not, wouldn't change that fact. The manga is finished. The anime adaptation we got has the canon ending. When people bring up Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing OVA or HxH, that they've gotten remakes and such, the difference is that the 'original' anime, as people call them, was made BEFORE the manga was finished. Yu-Gi-Oh's final arc was rushed bc Takahashi's publisher told him to finish it. The rating after Battle City dropped, and sensei being in the hospital for 40 days also didn't help. That's why the Millennium World arc is so short and unbelievably rushed. Battle City is technically 16 books (depending on the type of book that you have)! DSoD was requested by Shueisha, the director asked Takahashi to write for the film. How much that sensei had written for the film that was used is up for debate bc you can clearly tell which scenes were made by sensei and which for marketing purposes. Overall, if Shueisha sees a profit opportunity, then maaaaaybe we might get a reboot. But I'm certain that the only reboot we might get will be like Zexal (bc Zexal beat by beat is DM for modern audience of that time).

@@scattershot666That's kind of the problem. If they were to reboot it, I think it should be as a tribute to the manga that started it all, not as a vehicle to sell their current product. I'm not a fan of the idea of rebooting the original DM anime. If Kazuki Takahashi was alive then maybe, but reworking his most famous manga after his passing is disrespectful in my eyes. I wouldn't mind seeing a new series that's again more mystical. It's sad that the setting became somewhat generic sci-fi after the first half of 5D's. To me ancient magic being used in modern times was always more fun. I hope we see more of that. More than anything is like to see Konami Animation expand on the card art lore they teased at the start of the year.

A continuation of the Duel Monsters series would be my first choice. Something that picks up after Dark Side of Dimensions, and has the same amazing animation quality and fast paced duel choreography. Imo, there's some really cool ideas to have with a reboot. If Takahashi was still alive, I would kill to give him a chance to go back through and do what he wants, whether it be from season 0 or rewriting parts along the way. But leaving the original property in other hands without the chance to get input sits weird, definitely possible to do great, plenty of examples of, but weird. I do think the biggest thing would be streamlining the pacing. Yes you need to have extensive dialogue at times, especially since in most cases, they're just sitting around playing cards. But getting closer to the duel flow in DSOD where it's closer to the actual game (at times) and flows well because they know they're on a clock, a lot of the anime is "Well I did this, and this and A-HA clutch card for an insta kill no matter how far I was behind" after having just finished the original manga and trying to get back into the shows more. There is very little tension in the duels themselves at times, most of it is the other factors. Let them play the game, be fine with handwaving that they put their cards face down, not declaring every slight move, but still give insight to their thoughts and strategies. I think aiming it at the teenage-young adult from the outset would do it more favors too versus the anime's initial take where it was brought to be targeting a younger base, then 4Kids targeting even younger. I think the censorship actually opened some really fun ideas (Shadow realm, some of the redesigned horrific ideas) but more often put them in a corner where they have to break tone. What you mentioned at the end is an interesting idea too, Rush duels could be an interesting way of handling it, I haven't seen the anime, but it lets them do the newer properties with relatively simple rules that are a bit easier to adapt and, from what little I've experienced in Duel Links, reasonably reflects the very early abilities and beatstick card style. That said, it fits weird with the strategy and styles of those classic characters, there's probably a way to do it, but I'd probably rather them just play the original game with some easier to follow strategies that take a few turns like ye olden days. Partially out of nostalgia, partially out of audience ability to follow if they look away for 2 seconds like me in Master Duel trying to figure out why my screen says Defeat right after I accepted the match.

Should do a fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood. Follow the manga closer, keep the most VAs possible, and better animation. Making it a anime only remake is meh imo especially if they put modern cards. The way the modern game is played each game would end in 1-3 total turns it would be complex and boring. Your argument of trying to slow roll duels literally proves that the anime HAS to misrepresent the game to make it entertaining. People trying to then play these decks will be crushed just like if they tried a goat deck by modern decks.

Besides the issue of the game being practically unapproachable to new/returning players, let's be honest about the "resurgence" of Yu-Gi-Oh... it's not that big of a deal. If it was, there would be substantial motivation to actually make Go Rush available outside of Japan. When even Crunchyroll is like, "Nope, don't have that one.", you know that NOBODY cares. The one thing besides Noah Lyles pulling out cards that really got the Internet buzzing was that anniversary video that made everyone think we could be getting a Monster World anime... when it turned out to basically be an ad. That's it. Nothing else. There's no product release, no merchandise, no influencer tie-in that's going to make a big difference. Ironically enough though, they actually already have the answer and just don't want to do it. Don't make a reboot. People are tired of them. They're tired of the same old crap being retold and they want something new. Instead, do what people THOUGHT Konami was going to do. Make a Monster World style anime. Tell the stories that are being told in the card game. Give us the story around all the Albaz/Branded stuff with the Tri-Brigades, Springans, Swordsouls, etc. Animate the story of Visas Starfrost and their journey across the galaxy with the Tearlaments, Scareclaw and Kashtira. Yes, you can also get to a point where you could do stuff about the Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes, and other nostalgic archetypes. Point being, they can make a new Yu-Gi-Oh anthology series that is actually new AND draw in fans AND promote the new cards without it being another story about Yugi and Kaiba getting duel boners for one another. They just don't want to because that means spending money and taking a risk. Konami just doesn't want to.

I myself am a bit of a yugi-boomer. I've kept up with the game at a glance but haven't purchased new sets since Shining Victories. I wasn't a fan of pendulums and then when the master rules around Link monsters originally harmed other monsters in the extra deck, it just felt like they weren't really thinking about the integrity of the gameplay and just slapping whatever quick fix they came up with that day. That being said, I still love YuGiOh heavily. Edison and goat formats are my preferred way to play(although I genuinely enjoy XYZ monsters) and the recent retro reprints inspired me to build a retro cube. It feels nostalgic and reminiscent of childhood, but I also have my modem sensibilities and years of experience playing tabletop games behind it, making for that "modern strategy" touch you mentioned about the characters not needing to cheat to make things interesting. On a seperate note, or at least a point to make in terms of accessibility for new and/or returning players. If you want to play modern YuGiOh at a more fun pace with interaction and not the insane combos that lead to solitaire strategies; make decks singleton. By eliminating duplicates, you morph the gaming landscape heavily. There's a lot more variety in gameplay, and although there's more chance for bricking, your opponent has that same disadvantage. Only having a single copy of any one card definitely makes the gameplay less repetitive and overall more interesting in my opinion.

If people both in and outside the community complain about the way modern Yu-Gi-Oh is played I don’t believe rebooting the series with the cast running new cards would result in player retention which is what the game has been struggling with for years. It would likely be a Master Duel situation where initial interest is high but ultimately would seriously decline or the interest would only go as far as watching the anime or collecting older cards. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with just playing GOAT format but there is a clear limit to what money can be made buying old cards. Plus doing a retelling of the original Duel Monsters anime would require a new lower power format (no not a reset) alongside it so that at least people can have a space to play like in the anime. Not to mention there are writers of different Yu-Gi-Oh who have found difficulty with writing duels regarding modern cards. Personally I’m in favor of an anime reboot telling the manga story or a continuation from the Dark Side of Dimensions. I know people want more time Yugi and Kaiba but honestly their character arcs are over however Joey did want to turn dueling into a long term career so he is the best option to continue the story. That’s not to say you can’t have Yugi or Kaiba in a hypothetical continuation but just make their appearances rare so it feels special.

So here’s a story for you: When I was a kid I was so into all the duel type games, beyblade, pokemon, Yugi-oh, ect. I would see the other kids with their decks duking it out in the hallways, in the cafeteria, the kids would circle around and as a kid with no friends and loved the games all I wanted was to be part of this but sadly my parents refused to buy me any of the games. But a few years later lo and behold I was finally given some pokemon cards for my birthday because they looked into it and deemed It more okay than the others I guess so I got my first card. I was so excited until I got to school and Imagine my shock when they got confiscated because of that infamous schools starting to ban cards era. I was so disappointed that I finally got them only to be told I couldn’t play with them. With no one to play with, I kind of just gave up on asking for more. Years later I’m an Adult with adult money and I can buy my own dang cards, so around last year I started to try and build my own deck and had this little fantasy of tournaments and playing against other players. I even rewatched the whole Yugi-oh franchise to prepare myself but again SHOCKED. You see I stopped around Zexal but didn’t really watch it in full depth as the past ones so I had no idea there were newer gens after Zexal. It didn’t take long for me to realize the game was totally different from before, I even tried to get into Master duel to understand it better but it’s just overly complex and feels like to much. I instantly didn’t like the play and only like playing classic style. This is my personal opinion: they need to start having separate rooms and separate tournaments for classic players and new gen players. It’s way too much to ask new players to adapt to such complex rules and heavy competition of people who perfected it to a T. TL;DR: They need to make separate competitions for people who play classic and new gen. New gen isn’t Player friendly.

Even trying the Switch game and master duel like people recommend its just not a fun game anymore, its trying to beat your opponent as quick as possible, instead of the ride up to the win that makes the game an experience and more like the tv show. That all happens when youre by yourself, figuring out what the meta is, the perfect deck for whatever tournament youre going to. Which, if you have fun with that more power to you and keep that up. To other people trying to hop in again/for the first time thats just not a fun game. Especially to players like me, who would just like some more Dark Magician/Red Eyes/Summoned Skull/overall classic support. They couldve overcomplicated the support systems for the monsters that players loved, but it got too complicated with way too many classes/ways of play/monster type/card type etc. Seems like Konamis catching on to that with more Dark Magician/Blue eyes support but considering the way Konami designs cards (Cards/new types are typically made 7 years ahead of time on average) its too late unless they maneuver in a new way. The issue with later arcs is that they feel that they have to "1 up" the previous arcs in scope so they focus on a big story that is not all that believable/interesting. The card game also takes a back seat here. And also the characters themselves. I care about Joey, Yugi and the gang, and want some epic Duel Monsters duels of course. I do like your idea of sort of mixing the ideas together, like using similar ideas and such from the older show, but updating the character decks and such. I also love the suggestion of slowing down the plays for the Anime, the Yugioh fandom needs more of that now, since every duel nowadays seems to be OTKs if even that. Yeah, the "nostalgia overload" thing you mention is happening all over the place, even in live-action stuff, a huge example of that is Star Wars. What I mean is like everywhere you look whenever you see Star Wars stuff it's always Luke, Han, and Leia or Darth Vader or Obi-Wan and so on and all the shows and movies they have been releasing and such have pretty much all been set in the time period of the Original Trilogy or the Prequel Trilogy and such, and a lot of fans have been getting tired of it and want stuff set outside the "Skywalker Saga" as its been called, which the books and comics have been doing, but it's not enough. Another big one is Harry Potter, fans want to see more stuff expanding on the Wizarding World like a project focusing on the beginning of Hogwarts and its founders, or one following Harry's dad and his friends during their time at Hogwarts and stuff like that, but it seems all that the studios and such want to do is remake the main 7 books and have the focus be entirely on Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Those are just a couple examples. As far as what could satisfy the most amount of people for Yugioh, while a reboot seems a bit of a situation like you mention, I could see them marketing it as less of a reboot and more of a successor series or a sort of Alternate Universe sort of thing. What I mean is more something like X-Men '97 is to X-Men: the Animated Series or like what Pokemon sort of did with the more recent Pokemon movies, where the former is a continuation of the previous series and the latter is more or less the same basic ideas but they are allowed to tell their own stories that differ from any of the source material and change or omit certain characters or put other characters in those roles and such all while still keeping the main characters (in the case of Pokemon they kept Ash and Pikachu, but did new stories with them that didn't have anything to do with the main Anime and occasionally brought in other supporting characters and locations and such from the main Anime, but did different things with them). Yugioh does already sort of have this going for it as the Bonds Beyond Time movie and times in the Anime when the other protagonists go back and visit Yugi or that time period (like the duel at the end of GX between Yugi and Jaden) there seems to be hints of story arcs that they are in the middle of that we've not actually seen anything of, perhaps they could make an Anime of that or go and do something with the Yugioh R Manga or whatever as well as perhaps the other Manga stories that weren't adapted for the Anime or some of the stories from the video games like Falsebound Kingdom and such. Whatever the case, while I personally wouldn't be opposed to a reboot of the OG Yugioh, as you said I know there's a lot who wouldn't want it. That said, perhaps they could do some expanding on the universe like I mentioned a lot of other fandoms want, like when we got that trailer from Konami of Yugioh Chronicles or whatever it was called where we explore the world of the Monsters and learn the lore and such of them that we don't get from the regular Anime, there seemed to be a lot of interest in something like that maybe that's more the direction they should go and make an Anime of that or whatever. Perhaps even do a crossover miniseries or movie or special or whatever where all the non-Rush Duel protagonists get together and have one big 6-way duel between each other (or maybe have like a big tournament between all them with their supporting cast and their villains team up or whatever) allowing them to show more modern cards and strategies and such as well as new cards made specifically for the project (that's personally been an idea that I've wanted to see done for a long time). Or dare I say do a live-action Yugioh reboot or story or whatever, that seems to be something many Anime and Anime-like cartoons (like Avatar: the Last Airbender) seem to want to be doing as of recent, to varying degrees of success.

as far as Gameplay goes, I feel what the franchise needs is a proper visual format that can remain consistent no matter where it goes... and Master Duel has a pretty good showing of how that can be presented in anime form. the ultimate goal is to have a way to show a duel going on, even when the duelists aren't speaking at all... basically having certain actions be accompanied by what would look like a system message... for instance, you normal summon a monster, you'd see a visual cue with the words "NORMAL SUMMON" flash briefly to show it. for Extra Deck and Ritual summons, you'd have the visuals for the summon with a sort of loading screen blink twice (FUSING, TUNING, OVERLAYING, LINKING, TRIBUTING) with the summon announced when completed (FUSION/SYNCHRO/XYZ/LINK/RITUAL SUMMON) the same would apply to combo chains, Effect 1 would flash "MONSTER/SPELL/TRAP EFFECT", and responses would be pinged as CHAIN 2 onward. if you want a visual flair, you could have the effects chaining do an intensifying impact the longer the chain goes. ultimately, if you can show a duel, with nobody speaking and still have people follow along to know what happened... then you can dedicate the silence for character interactions instead.

It's funny, I just watched DSOD a few days ago and was thinking along these same lines. I decided I'd like to see a series where we catch up with the original crew but, into early adulthood. Yugi now looks and sounds like Atem, is married to Teá, and makes games for Kaiba Corp. Seto has grown wiser after returning from dueling with the Pharaoh in the underworld, and Mokuba's finally gotten tall. Joey and Mai live in NY(she's a model and he runs a dueling academy or something) Tristan owns a chain of motorcycle repair shops in Domino, etc. They could slowly pass the baton to the next generation as the series begins to focus on their kids dealing with some new problems involving magic and monsters.

Would really enjoy a reimagining or continuation of the original Anime. But you bring up a good point how you laid out the turns to slow things down. I wonder if that would work in Yugioh tcg today. For example you only get one action or two on your first turn same for the opponent. This includes summoning. Limit summoning, and magic cards. Have to plan your attacks and strategies. It could be awful but your concept was interesting. Great vid!

I still want the original manga, be completely adapted in new animation. I know a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh fans want true to life Yu-Gi-Oh duels and no other games. Which is why they enjoyed 5D's so much. I started around the GX era because of the character Jaden. I was familiar with DM but never watched it cause it didn't interest me at the time. Despite owning some VHS tapes of sporadic episodes (which I long lost). After watching through GX it actually made want to rewatch the YGO DM and play the game using simulators at the time. Eventually season when I looked it up online. Much radically different from what I was used to. Though didn't pay it too much mind at the time. I kept marathoning DM using web sites. My case I wouldn't care about a DM reboot cause as someone that actually plays high level ygo (cause I sucked hard when I started out as a kid) DM doest age well at all for us who actually play the game and grew up in a much different time. If anything DM reboot will only appeal to DM fan and fans of the og lore. Not to us, guess you can say, next gen ygo

That's my biggest thing imo. I've almost developed a visceral hatred for Dark Magician and Blue Eyes just because of how they keep coming up over and over again. I think we got Blue Eyes support in 2016 with Spirit then 2022 (?) with Jet and now we're getting more Blue Eyes cards. Even in today's Yugioh, the game is honestly pretty interactive if you're playing a deck that's at least semi-competent (or you sack enough non-engine), we're finally out of the "Negate and destroy" era, and (as much as I hate him) Arise-Heart showed us that we can have interactive boss monsters that don't negate but are strong enough to command a game.

Haven't watched the vid yet but my pitch would be a new series featuring a young Solomon Muto, prof. Hawkins and Pegasus based in egypt at the time of the excavations. The series would end with the birth of Duel Monsters, and up untill then they would figure out a way to fight with the monsters that's more similar to a creature battler like they do in the final season of DM. I think an official DM-era creature battler would be a cool product, especially if launched alongside its own series. I personally think that shifting the setting to an unimmaginably far future was the first of many mistakes konami made with the IP, as much as I love scifi, a setting that's more mystical than technological better suits the game, just think about the words used for the game mechanics: tributing, summoning, spells, rituals, etc.

So funny I was thinking about this just the other day, and here's a few paths I would be interested in. So similar how Gundam Origins gives us a different side the original Mobile Suit Gundam, or how the Power books re-centers the story around another character, I'd be into seeing a spinoff series that provides us with more storytelling for another character and titles it around them, for instance if you did this with Kaiba or Marik you could have a lot of mileage with just giving us their vantage point and showing their motivations, and you could end Marik's run at Battle City; Kaiba's you could start or end wherever, relate it to DSoD even. The other option I could watch is a story after Dark Side of Dimensions where there's just more supernatural threats to Domino City and Yugi has to duel through them all (w/o Atem). I know DSod isn't canon, but they had something there they need to run with, and you could introduce a lot of new modern cards and tactics.

I'm glad it was brought up, because If they Rebooted the OG Series, I'd personally want them to reinvent it around the original series but with new cards too. But slowly introduce that new stuff, not just all from Arc 1, I think that'd be "Too much". I also think they'd rework the earlier seasons to use Modern rule sets too, so do away with the weird Duelist Kingdom shenanigans. It also being a way to bridge Yugiboomers and modern Yugioh. I definitely feel like they shouldn't change the characters too much or /at all/, motivation and personality, as I think broader audiences would simply NOT like it, I know I'd be cautious about it. And for modern gameplay, making crazy long combos would be a pain in the ass and people would hate it. Nobody wants to listen to a 10 minute combo and a 5 card unbreakable endboard, it'd just make shitty TV, so yes, streamlining the duels to be more back and forth would be a great idea. I don't think we need a Reboot, but if they did do it, thats how I'd want. A unique retelling, with faithful characters, but modern tools. Edit: And for the VA's, I mean Joey, Kaiba and YuGi have REALLY iconic voices. I'd definitely say you should consider getting those back. If you reboot it, you'd need good VA's either way.

I used to work at a card shop and kids would come in to buy cards and it was the same thing every time. Blue-Eyes cards, Dark Magician cards, Red-Eyes cards. Pick a DM archetype, and they’d want it. Konami pushes DM in our faces so much, that all the sequel series get drowned out, and the current generation of kids just watch that, and the generation that grew up watching the OG show have just ignored the new series completely. We don’t need a reboot because Konami can just keep schilling the original over and over and we’ll just keep getting the same stupid Yugi and Kaiba merch over and over again. The cycle never ends.

Exactly , Tho the other yugioh series are great (Zexal , 5Ds & Vrains being personal favorites) The original DM series overshadows them so overwhelmingly in the public eye so much that they are hardly known, A sequel series to the original DM would probably be the best option, with Yugi now running a gameshop following DoD, ( also some set rotation with diffrent formats couldbe nice, rather than ONLY this "all cards- a few bans" we're stuck in

I genuinly think the answer is animating Yugioh Structures if you want the tcg focus, or OCG stories if its just the IP. Structurex is genuinly great. You get to see the key moments of duels, but they often cut past a big part of setup combos, leaving room for character exploration and side gags (unlike vrains, where it was a duel episode or a plot episode, it felt like.)
