Which type of Yu-Gi-Oh video game do you prefer: a simulator service or different spins on the franchise? I think they both have their merits, but I prefer the latter!

I would love more pve player games with a bit more of a simplification trying to reduce redundant phases or activation windows. Making it a bit more like Hearthstone if that makes sense.

I love different spins but its only through simulators that I can play daily. Without sims I would need to drive hours to play. Its a whole day trip minimum. If I could play locally I would prefer the alternate takes like Duelist of the roses.

The problem is that the simulators don't really simulate enough. Master Duel for instance yes, it is a really good execution of the card game, but it really doesn't try to go any further than "Here's a render of a monster or card you love", everything else is just the card game, which you can get since the PS1 days. I personally feel the best kind of YGO Video game is the one that combines quirks and makes ANIME simulator service? YGO Online and Tag Force are the ones that come to mind since, fundamentally they also offer the same experience if not more given the pre-rendered cutscenes for boss monsters, but they're focused on representing the feeling of the anime, with the different reactions and animations from characters and/or avatars. I feel when it comes to YGO videogames, the flashier and anime-esque it feels, the better.

As someone who's been playing a LOT of the old school yugioh games, and making videos on them, I feel like Konami is really sleeping on a lot of potential. Stuff like Dungeon Dice monsters or Capsule Monster Coliseum are games that have a LOT of good going for them, but were hindered because actual physical releases couldn't be feasible - But digitally? They could really expand upon yugioh of just being a card game and make it a full on diverse franchise.

I've been think about similar things with your last point, given how the monster verse of Yugioh is presented. Just like Time Wizard and Tag/Team formats, there's a goldmine in marketing Yugioh's non TCG aspects.

DDM was seriously flawed, yes(I had horrible experience reaching all the way to Dark Tournaments), but it still had interesting stuff going on. Especially picking up early Manga characters - which no other game did. Stuff like Capsule, Falsebound etc still look interesting though I don't think Konami's gonna restore any of them soon..

The problem is that Yugioh isn't actually popular any more... It's basically very niche and not worth the development time needed for the result.... and even if older fans played the games, they might not like it unless if it's the proper Yugioh card game... It will take time and money for a product that probably won't sell well...

Duelist of the Roses was cool because it had complete 3D models of so many cards. Including cards that only ever showed their face. So that was your first and only time ever seeing the full body of certain monsters like The Snake Hair, who's card only showed her face, but the model showed her entire snake-like body.

@@LeedleLee457 I still play Duelists of the Roses to this day. The ai is kind of dumb, but the 7 x 7 grid with terrain buffs and movement boosts made for a really interesting experience. Deck leaders having abilities, certain old school cards having different abilities (Cyberstein, Pumpking, Mystical Elf, Riryoku [busted effect in DOTR], etc), being able to fuse without polymerization, the ability to send cards to the grave immediately when you had either 5 spells/traps or monsters out, etc. These were all super fun mechanics that made YGO feel alive and tactical. God I love this game, even though the ai wasn't quite there in some of the easier duels.

For some reason, they shifted entirely to simple duel simulators and dropped the open-world story-driven stuff. Maybe that's what fans really wanted at the time (maybe they still do?), or maybe Konami found it cheaper and more financially consistent to go this route. Personally, I enjoy the older games that aren't strict duel simulators a lot more than Duel Links and Master Duel. I liked running around Battle City or Duel Academy and going through an actual plot.

As someone who doesn't like where the game is now, I, to this day, still go back and play these older Yugioh games. Whether it's a duel simulator with an adventure mode like the Yugioh Championship Series or an off-the-wall, completely bonkers but completely unique take on Yugioh like Duelists of the Roses, I absolutely love so many of these old games. This was the era where Yugioh was at its peak, and the quality of these games really shows that. From the GBA era all the way up through the DS. Hell, I played the hell out of World Duel Carnival, which was a ZEXAL game on the 3DS. It was just a duel simulator with a very limited story kind of deal, but it was still fun to have a videogame and play against AI opponents. Some of them are pretty hit or miss, ESPECIALLY duel simulator games. Some of those older ones got extremely repetitive, like 2006. Some of my favorite old Yugioh games were the ones where you got to relive the anime moments but as an OC with a deck all your own that you get to build from the ground up. Games like Stairway to the Destined Duel, GX: Spirit Caller and the 5D's games (ESPECIALLY Reverse of Arcadia, that game was amazing!). But there were original games I loved as well, like Duelists of the Roses. The weird, original game I probably fell in love with the most was Capsule Monster Coliseum, which I can only assume was based on the Capumon concept from the original Yugioh manga. The anime even adapted a TV special based on this concept too, so that was pretty fun! I really had a blast with these games, and I sorely miss the days when Yugioh videogames actually had effort put into them. The games we have are fine and serviceable. But they're very...vanilla and boring. Duel Links was fun for a little while, when it was just an homage to older Yugioh, but then they started updating it with all the new mechanics again and I personally fell off of it. But I do appreciate the flavor in that game, at least. I really do hope this VR game you mentioned takes off. Even if it's just a duel simulator, being able to play with holographic monsters has been a legit dream of mine since I was a kid! Make more games about the MONSTERS, not card game sims! There's a lot of potential in the Yugioh/Duel Monsters concept that is just being ignored these days. Games that can't really effectively be released physically like Dungeon Dice Monsters work amazingly well in a digital, videogame format. Do more stuff like that! Make original games with the gold mine of monster designs you already have!

Maybe not, but that hasn't stopped them before. In Falsebound Kingdom, a bunch of monsters included were normally Fusion or Ritual monsters or had to be created by using a certain item on certain monsters. They could just reformat how summoning works for the game or bypass it entirely. Gaia the Fierce Knight could have a Black Luster Ritual used on it and turn into Black Luster Soldier. Petit Moth, when given the Cocoon of Evolution, became Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth. Mavelus and Aqua Dragon were just *there* instead of having to be fused. They've done it before, I don't see why they couldn't do it again.

While i personally feel The Tag Force series was THE PEAK of what YGO games could bring to the table and how all they needed was to keep growing that format in terms of cards and animations (easier said than done, i know), i feel the ones that try to be more than JUST THE CARD GAME end up lasting the most. Tag Force for what is worth lasted 6 games and 2 generations of YGO by adding a more anime-esque feel to the duels with the characters and animations. But ultimately, people remember the character interactions in those games, much like how Forbidden Memories was more like a Season Zero version of the card game, which i feel should have been attempted more for the sake of exploring the foundation of that version of the card game. And Falsebound Kingdom, while REALLY SLOW, the idea of an RTS YGO game is fundamentally solid. And i remember those 3 concepts and come to mind when thinking of "YGO Video Games" way more than Duel Links, master Duel or Legacy of Duelist, which are JUST the card games, and hell, i have no doubt Duel Links has been kept alive due to the anime fan service.
@Zetact_
@Zetact_ 3 ай бұрын
It's not just that Tag Force had a ton of fun interactions with anime characters but that the NPCs being given more and more fleshing out with each game as the series progressed, to the point that they're to many people seen as fan-favorites, were brilliant. They made the world of Tag Force feel lived-in, and the personality that was shown through the random duelist's decks can't be underestimated. There were small things like Kenyou's goofy "monster swapping" strategy, or the guy with the deck of turtles, or the burn player who always used Mecha Bunny, or the character who had a deck exclusively of Tuner monsters. And that's not even getting into how later archetypes were made that would be perfect for the Tag Force characters. I think the point being that Tag Force wasn't "just" a duel simulator and it wasn't even "just" an anime-inspired RPG for the games - the cast of tier 3 duelists are a HUGE part of the game's soul, because they make it feel a lot more like it's "your" story. There are even some people to this day who are still making fanart of the tier 3 duelists, that's how good they were in the games. This is partially why I think Tag Force Special was a bit of a letdown - yeah, it makes sense that the game, being an anniversary title, would want to focus on all 5 anime series up to that point and mechanically a lot of the changes were pretty good (the animations being cut is a bit of a sidegrade, because while you don't have the animations, for the most part having voice lines over the duel is less obstructive to the gameplay - though losing the Destiny Draw animations was a downgrade) but due to the scale of Tag Force Special it meant that there was far less room for the tier 3 duelists so the game felt less like a "Tag Force" title. Tag Force 6 gave even the tier 3 duelists some unique dialogue for their story segments, Tag Force Special didn't even give Tier 2 duelists a story mode.

Honestly, the Yu-Gi-Oh game that I would dream of to be THE Yu-Gi-Oh game for us is an open-world Yu-Gi-Oh game where you can create your own character and you can play through the entire stories of each Yu-Gi-Oh arc and story from the perspective of your own character. Do stuff as talk with the main cast, duel against iconic goes, build relationships with characters such as Yugi, Jaden, Yusei, etc. and form a whole story that changes depending on your actions and such. You can say something akin to like it Yu-Gi-Oh did the route of Dragon Ball Xenoverse with your CaC entering into the main story and changing it and such. Man and I JUST finished Forbidden Memories for the first time yesterday lol I've never been the biggest fan of the card game, or card games in general, but I've always had a soft spot for the anime and games, and I've been getting back into them recently. What I like about the video games is how they each feel like a snapshot of the era when it was released. From the early more experimental original series era, when the Duel Monsters rules weren't solidified and they were experimenting with different types of games beyond DM, to the gx And 5D's era, where the games became a lot more consistent and were more focused on giving a decently accurate representation of the card game with extra flair and content for the die-hard fans and single-player duelists. And thanks to how they approached these game releases, most of these games are still worth going back to, and there's plenty to enjoy for both casual and hardcore fans of the series. I'm definitely looking forward to playing more of these, especially ones like Roses and Capsule Monster Coliseum. And hopefully I'll be ready to give the anime a full watch-through when I have the time!

It's a shame that Konami seems to have overlooked these gems and lost just an overall sense of direction when it comes to making more innovated games. The big problem it all really boils down to is video games aren’t made from passion anymore. There’s no way to take risks in the video game sphere because everything is about shareholders getting more and more value out of their investments so games are made to be as safe as possible to appeal to the “widest possible audience”. Because of that Masterduel will be the catch all live service style game because it prints money.

I miss the spin offs, really loved the ds games and the tag force games. They followed the anime but had additional features like the ds games had the touch screen and spirit caller introduced a gimmick with duel spirits where you got benefits for including a spirit monster in your deck. Tag force has social links and the destiny draw mechanic and they were so much fun. Forbidden memories was great and duelist of the roses was great. Sacred cards and reshef of destruction were also favourites of mine, rpg elements, story was fun in both, and a different mechanic of how monsters interact, kind of like duelist kingdom. When’s the early days collection going to be released? Has Konami forgot they make video games?

Yugioh world championship 2008 was my favourite growing up. I enjoyed the fact that it had a unique campaign mode with an overworld, and allowed you to duel against your own deck recipies which provides essentially endless play time. Yugioh World Championship 2008 was peak Yugioh on DS. Even if the later Games had a much better RPG like Story Mode, the slow AI and the way less appealing Duel Screen made them way less enjoyable. The 2008 Game had a nice Campaign, you can unlock Characters from the original Series and GX and every Monster had a little 3D Model on the field. Many of them even had different Models when they are in Defense Mode. The DS Game "Nightmare Troubadure" started it... and WCS 2008 mastered it. So sad the 5Ds Games changed so much.

@@wilkobadberg5272 While I still enjoy 2008 very much, this is kinda sad that a game from that early(2008) still has a only-one kind of charm - balancing AI thought process time and demonstration(mainly about the upper screen solid vision) which none of the later games all the way to 2024 actually presented that well..

What I love about those old GBA games is that they're such a time-capsule for their era. Like, I really believe that when people say they want to play "old-school" Yugioh, that specifically is the kind of Yugioh they want to play. After all, if you were a kid back then and into Yugioh, you probably couldn't duel your friends with the real cards every day. But what you could do is boot up World Championship 2004 or whatever and play that instead! And I'm sure that really influenced how a lot of people viewed the game, looking back. But yeah, I agree that it's a shame we don't get weird experimental games like Duelists of the Roses anymore. It could even stem from the lack of a modern, recognizable anime to go with them. These "games as a service" they have now are fine while they're active, and it's great to simply be able to log in and play, but when they pull the plug they're gone. I don't know if Master Duel will be around 10 years from now, but 20 years after its release I can still play World Championship and normal summon Battle Ox like the good ol' days.

That's a good point about the videogames being the real embodiment of "old-school" Yugioh. People often dismiss it as just "playground Yugioh", but that's not really accurate for a lot of us. It's not playground OR an old meta. It's just the very unique, singleplayer-oriented balance specifically seen in the videogames.

by seeing the manga, and how it all started, i feel it all was a passion from the creator kazuki takahashi, he loved to create all sorts of games, and thats why, in the dark side of dimensions movie, he stated that yugi was going to become a game designer, because thats what he loved. he also created an instagram account to present all sorts of games "yugi" was creating. with the debut of cross duel, i felt that, finally he was doing another shot that we all love, like dungeon dice or capsule monsters. but with his death, sadly, i belive that cross duel was the last one to see the daylight, it think bandai prefer to stay on a safe lane, rather than to experiment. and i belive that, the source of the ideas, is gone now. something that will make it even difficult for that to happen.

For example go through and each area has a specific Monarch so you enter the Different Dimension and duel Caius using a macro cosmos D.D. Deck and he can like use his effect once per turn or something. I also figured Frognarchs with Mobius as the boss and earth stun deck with Granmarg and then further in the game you'd see the newer forms and monarchs. Or a game where you recreate the story for the generaiders and runick
