Basics of Sikhi

Let's look at the accusation by Atheists that there are so many different religions and no way to work out which one is correct?. This is #6 in a set of videos addressing common arguments by Atheists against religion and providing the Sikh perspective. Delivered on the 21st October 2013 @ Royal Holloway.

very nice as for singing and use of instruments and organ the Christians themselves did this 500 years after jesus before that they only use to read out hyms or do different type of prayers like the lord prayer but actual singing with instruments like the Sikhs was not done but yes I understand what you are saying

Question for Basics of Sikhi-- how do you see evil. There are people there with bad intentions towards others. I do understand that you don't believe in an evil force,so would this be considered as bad karma or being away from God? or something different? Thank you!

Evil does not exist per se... evil actions and thoughts are a product of Ego...ego is the result of separation from the Divine... so its like Darkness does not exist, its the absence of Light... and yet, we cannot see in the dark. SO Ego brings Lust, Anger, Greed, Price and Attachment, all of which blind us to the light hidden inside... Why do we do Evil? Cause we are blind. Why are we blind? We do not open our eyes to see. Why dont we open our eyes? Its our karma in past lives and this life which determines how much we are able to open our eyes. Solution... if you realise you are blind and need to open your eyes, then start now, go from Gu (darkness) to Ru (light), get a Guru, preferably one who is fully enlightened. Hope that helps. Did you message us yet?

If Waheguru, allah, God etc just mean God. Then does that mean God has sent falsehood to other religions expect sikhi because we believe in different things? There is only 1 God but the same God has sent falsehood to other religions and just sikhi has the whole full truth? Why?

If there is no religion then there shouldn't be any problem in a Sikh girl marrying a muslim man in a gurdwara. Additionally there shouldn't be any problem in amrithdharis marrying non amritdharis then and there shouldn't be any problem in a sikh having a muslim wife or a christian wife or any other. If we reject this then we are rejecting nah koi hindu na koi musalman

there is no religion, doesn't mean there is no hypocrisy. by doing a Sikh wedding you are bowing to SGGS and going around it four times to indicate that its the centre of your life and vowing to accept the anand kaaraj lavan path of enlightenment... so if you're not a disciple of SGGS and dont believe in these vows, then why be a hypocrite and go through this ceremony. Honestly...rejecting hypocrisy is part of Sikhi. You should watch our videos on this exact topic, Non-sikhs getting married in a gurdwara, to understand this.

Basics of Sikhi But brother if there is no religion then there is no such thing as a non-sikh at all or a sikh. Besides that even if it wasn't a marriage a non sikh as it is; isn't restricted from going around guru granth sahib or bowing to it. Bowing in another religious fashion to another god you believe to be your own surely can't be hypocrisy.

SpinnerSingh if sikhi says there is no hindu and there is no muslim there is no idea of nation at all let alone to be a part of that nation or be a joke crudely put. If sikhi is above bigotry surely it should be above Jingoism.

d3r2000 You have western philosophy stuck in your mind with western terms and western connotations. Na Koi Hindu Na Koi Musliman is not in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. It was said in a Janam Sahki (specifically the puratan Janam Sahki). The difference is Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was put together to be relevant for eternity. Na Koi Hindu Na Koi Musliman is a paradigm revolutionary phrase which was suited to counter the popular and government narrative at the time which was based on exclusiveness on truth and oppression on differences. The phrase is only relevant for that certain circumstance but the message it was relaying is relevant for all time but that message cannot be relayed for all time in that form so it is in several different other forms within Sri Guru Granth Sahib....the most prominent is "Sarbat De Bala" (for the good of people.....regardless of caste, sex, color, sexual orientation, and creed (hindu, muselman, christian, jew, jain, buddist, and sikh) Nation is defined as: a large aggregate of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language. taking amrit was exactly that. Your parents are now Mata Sahib Kaur and Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Your village is now Anandpur so your last name is now Kaur or Singh...this is your family your caste your nation your creed....your flag is the Nishan Sahib...and your mission is Sarbat De Bala with a culmination into the form of Begumpura (The City without Sadness). The Panth is a Nation started by Guru Nanak Sahib Ji under the definition of Begumpura. Read on Ang 345 in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (can be found easily on srigranth.org)....it clearly explains what the Guru's Nation and mission is....this ultimate goal of Begumpura which is supposed to be the ultimate for the age of Sat Yug (The age of Truth) where such distinctions do not matter. You're arguing with direct concepts of what the Guru is relaying. The Nation was created in order to fight for the down trodden in this everlasting Kal Yug (The Age of Death) of despair and injustice. And that Nation lives under the principle that all must be destroyed who destroy others self determination. The Panth/Nation and its institutions is needed because this is Kal Yug but it must forever try to create as many Sat Yug's as possible in the form of Begumpura but until there are only Begumpura's everywhere the Panth must exist to fight for the downtrodden and create Begumpura. Guru Nanak Sahib Ji Traveled for 27 years in search of Begumpura on this Earth or a town willing to change their ways to become Begumpura he didnt find any. So he went to some barren land outside Talwandi (Nanakana Sahib, Pakistan) and created the first Begumpura called Kartarpur where only the compassionate teacher Nanak Sahib Ji ruled under the principles within the shabaad on Ang 345. In turn Gurgadi was given to the Khalsa in the form of Sri Guru Panth in 1699: "Vaho Vaho Gobind Singh Apae Gur Chela"...Hail Hail Gobind Singh you the master have become the Disciple. Like all Bodies of Nanak before Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji the past body of Nanak bowed down to the next body of Nanak going from the Master to the Master Disciple. And this Panth's/Nation's mission as the temporal arm of the Guru on this Earth is to create Begumpura's. You seem to differentiate between the Guru's. Remember the Guru's are the 10 Nanak's...they are one jot one essence in 10 bodies. The mission and the way remained the same between all of them but the bodies changed. It was a progression toward creating the final heirs to Guruship...i.e Sri Guru Panth and Sri Guru Granth the holistic Guru we have now. You can call the Panth's citizens (Amrti Dhari's) Jingo's sure. But the difference is our nation is based on giving our heads willingly in deep meditative fervor so that others may live the way they please... not to have the sole objective of conquering the world. You are trying to get advanced level answers from the Basics of Sikhi page. This page is just that...basic...if you want to understand these concepts and advanced Sikhi you must read books or watch advanced seminar videos from Sikh Research Institute (they have a youtube page as well) or visit sikhinstitute.org for several indepth doctorate level abstracts on Sikhi and all these topics. You wont find answers from arguing with Nimanai (unknowledgeable) people like me in some youtube page.

That one's distance to god depends on one's actions is just an assertion though. Christians and muslims make different assertions, such as it depending on accepting Jesus as your lord and savior and following the commands in the Qur'an. It's all well and good that Sikhism denies this, but without ability to demonstrate it, it's not clear why it's more meaningful than the other assertions. Same with the assertions about afterlives or god worship. The question "Why not worship when you're here, because you can't escape the cycle of rebirth?" also just assumes the truth of certain metaphysical propositions that might well be false, and in fact are irrational to believe in due to lack of evidence. The utter lack of evidence means that the propositions of the Sikh are just as likely to be true as some random guy who claims the purpose of life is to be able to get both feet behind your neck and that it's just this criteria that you will be judged by - so you might as well start training right now. Clearly this is nonsense. In addition to being irrational, such views also diverts focus from what we know for a fact matters in life, such as advancing technology, being productive citizens etc. If your metaphysics involves ideas that include the current existence basically being meaningless, your beliefs are outright damaging to humanity. Also, asserting that all religions are true is just a contradiction. It is not a deep metaphysical insight, but an embarrassing falsehood.
