My wife got shoved down the tracks up in Ashland back around March of '76. I'm not exactly sure how she wound up on the tracks but the rescue squad arrived and was looking for the driver. She identified herself. The EMTs had a look of relief on their face that they didn't have to deal with a corpse. The snow was piled up on the side of the road about 10 ft high.

I find many sidings don't have them either, even in urban areas. Sometimes they only have a yield sign. I hope this is because the trains are going so slow on them that there's little chance of getting blindsided by one, or if it does hit you it just shoves you off the track very slowly instead of destroying everything it touches.

I was up in Oshkosh delivering a truck and had a train coming, so I stopped. A vehicle behind me decided they didn't like that and started honking at me😂. I politely got out and walked back there and told the woman that there was a train and if she was in a hurry she was more then welcome to go around well she about ran me over, flipped me off and by the time she got to the tracks the train was already there and not only that but it cane to a stop. We set there with her right next to my truck in then other lane for over an hour when it finally moved. I seen one of the guys that was on the train and thanked him, he was a bit confused until I told him what had happened. Made my day.

Really trying not to be a smart alack here. I'm sure there are areas where trains are out of view, however, for the most part they are easily detected. They are huge and noisy. I've sat in my brother's home, blocks away, and still heard one when it came through. Except for a few exceptions, and I'm sure there are some, you have too try to get hit by a train. Please do not flood me with examples of times when people have been hit and it was not there fault, I noted I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule.

Ive seen a train hit a car at approximately four miles per hour and it threw the car approximately 120 feet. This was on Memorial Day a few years ago in Elm Grove Wisconsin. I was on traffic patrol with the Police department Explorer Post and a woman was told to stop her vehicle and instead went around and high centered her vehicle. A train was on approach and had already begun an emergency stop about four miles out. A police officer and husband of the woman (unlicensed in a different vehicle) attempted to pull a child out of a child seat. I was twenty feet away when the train collided with the car. The child was fine, good car seat. The police officer survived but will never be able to work again. The husband of the woman was seriously injured as well. The husband and wife trued to sue CP Rail for not halting railways for our parade (ikr). So anyway, better safe than dead or seriously injured. I still have PTSD and havent been able to cross those rail tracks since.

Lost two friends to a train in Wisconsin 30+ years ago. Even more sad was they left behind a very little girl that miraculously survived the crash. The couple were taken to a local Hospital (band-aid station) that regrettably could do nothing to save them from the trauma they suffered but compassionately moved the conscious couple together in the same room next to each other so they could painlessly pass away together, softly talking and holding hands in a dimly lit room. My wife and I were in the same bowling league. It was very hard.

That's truly awful. At least they got to pass together. It really is a horrible scene trying to imagine the situation in which you are conscious, on the way out, and nothing can be done to save you. It's tragedies like these that determine the social shunning of red light runners, whether traffic or train signals. Red means stop, no matter what.

This sounds like the biggest load of BS story. Going the speed limit you can get to a trauma center from anywhere in Wisconsin within 2 hours, half that if you floor it. I can't think of any injury that is 1.) Fatal in less than 2 hours but simultaneously you are conscious (brain not that seriously injured) + working heart/lungs (talking); and they just put you in some dark room to die like it's the 1500s. And supposedly not one but both people ended up in such a condition. Yeah this story is BS

We of the old world would make risk assessments and go from there. Or we had waited and seen how long the train took to get and knew if we could make it. Or, have you walked the tracks lately? The trains are a lot slower these days.

@@Michaelfatman-xo7gvTrains are slower and they're longer. Being 20 mins late to work because of trains is nightmarish.

There is a clearly marked line where drivers should stop for this crossing. Obviously that driver pulled past it, in front of the camera, before continuing.

Ok, stop and wait for thirty seconds as you watch a train going 30 Mph slowly approach your stopped car. How many of these are locals and know how this is supposed to go down. Absolutely stop first. If the train is a quarter mile away going 30 mph, engage your brain and do the right thing.

I was way off. The train was doing 11 mph. People jog (not run) at 6 mph. The train, when the flashers started, was 42 seconds away from the road. (43 seconds away from hitting a car if it was on the track) 😁 I bet most guys commenting don't have hair on their palms because they listened to Mama. 😁 PS: I did these calculations while stopped, waiting for a train to pass. ....and rotated my tires.

@@randywl8925yeah, and then your car suddenly stalls right on the track. Suddenly 30-40 seconds isn't a long time at all. I've seen it happen.

A railroad employee friend of mine explained that it's not a matter of "if" a railroader will see automobiles hit by their train, but how often.
