I can't say what story Freddie was telling in his lyrics but I will offer this: Powder Monkeys were, usually poor or orphaned, adolescent age boys (16th-17th centuries) who worked on naval artillery ships. Their task was to run gunpowder from the ship's hold to the artillery guns. One can imagine they would be praying in the dead of night. "The Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale for Land-Babies" is a 19th century children's fantasy-adventure classic. Freddie was keen on Victorian art and literature and, obviously, knew this novel. "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke", about the 19th century painting of the same name is also on Queen II. Check it out (whilst viewing the painting.) Also, "Nevermore" is short and beautiful. Thanks.

The song feels chaotic because you don't understand the story, once you understand the story it makes perfect sense, but this is a song that grows on you. This is a whole section of a fantasy cramped onto a few minutes. The song start just before a battle at sea, blue power moneys managed the cannons on the ships, a few centuries ago. The Queen is a pirate, they are captured by the pirate queen after losing the battle, and they are tortured, "every finger nail and toe we have only begun". The black queen makes advances towards the protagonist of the story, "you can be my sugar baby you can be mu honey chile". Then he struggles for a few moments with the idea of being a traitor. But it doesn't last too long, he is love with the black queen's command and strengh, even if she might be baking people into pies. He commits himself to her cause. The last section is after some time, he has some time to think that he will forever say goodbye to the world he knew. That is the cliff notes version, I could explain every word but that would take long to type. Everything makes perfect sense if you understand the story, it is like an opera or cinematic music. There is some chaos because of battles and torture.

Listening to your analysis is very similar to my 1st couple times hearing this song. The more I heard it though, the more I liked it & it has become one of my favorite Queen songs.

This, in my opinion is so much more that Bohemian Rhapsody and so much earlier. The whole “BLACK SIDE” (side 2) is continuous and SO GREAT!

This early song by Mercury is the perfect example of how complex and creative his writing style and music can be. This one is likely to have an impact on the future of music (good or bad). It will also be an interesting piece of music, telling a story with a lot of different metaphors and references to past centuries. The story itself was written in an entirely unique style that seems like it has no relation or sense between the verses of the song. You need to play it more than once in order to understand how it works and what it means. The first impression is that it has been written in a way which the verses have been everywhere given the lyrics no sense. The greatest thing is that in every verse the lyrics have been written in a certain way, where lyrics, music, and harmonies complementing each other with the right tone, rhythm, and emotions.

It is a push and pull, the chaos of human emotions, it's good vs evil. It's human life. The Queen is the disruptor the one trying to lead people astray, then the angel comes and reminds him he is good, it's like having the devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other.

I love the depth of this song and if you really pay attention it is a sort of preview of what Bohemian Rhapsody will become on a musical level. The music itself took me through a story, kind of a journey. It was dramatic in its changes and I could feel characters from the story teller to the harshness of the appearance of the Black Queen rulling over her minions. She seemed so sharp and calculated. All of this nearly an aside to the lyrics. This is one of my favorite early queen songs, right up there with Liar. Thank you for your reaction and breakdown.

Fantastic analysis and imo completely fair. I grew up on Queen Greatest Hits 1&2, but not so much the earlier songs. You've already made all comments I believe necessary. 'Death on two legs' is my favourite early Queen song, but overall I feel 'Innuendo' is their best most complete overall. Too good for live stream (deserved of analysis), so perhaps I will add it to the queue for SS. Had to check as I saw Doug Has reaction and couldn't remember if you'd done one too. Just discovered that Innuendo's Flamenco sections was played by 'Yes' Steve Howe, making him the only non-member to feature on guitar in a Queen studio album

A lot of people compare this song to Bohemian Rhapsody, which is a bit ironic given that this song comes off as more 'Bohemian' than Bohemian Rhapsody. Thanks for taking my selection.

As it was stated in another channel : Brian May does not play solo`s, he playes his part in a song. I think that covers May`s style.

soo many unpopular queen gems.. I always saw this track as sort of the first blue print for Bohemian Rhapsody. The entire Queen II is a masterpiece. The Millionairs Waltz is another one of those masterfull compositions you should truly give a listen and probably an upload. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fl6zYYmwo8t-lac

I enjoyed this video. I listened to this album a lot in high school. It's cool, all the songs flow into one another like chapters of one long piece. And each song has tons of parts, like this one. I can understand not liking it. It might be the type of album you need to listen to all together. You might enjoy it more.

I’ve never heard the last bit as part of the song proper, i don’t think it is, but rather as an interlude between two songs, just that it wasn’t made a separate track.

This is from my favourite Queen album - I first had it on cassette, and always assumed the bit at the end was a prelude to the next song rather than a postlude(?) to this one. I still think it works better that way in my head. One amusing case with harmonies is early 70s Uriah Heep, which sounds so much like Queen, but before Queen started releasing albums. I agree that it's chaotic and split by discontinuities, but it works for me anyway - sorry it didn't work for you.

I agree with what you said about it's not going anywhere. I feel like this song would be better if Freddie has a bit of restrain on keep putting on the ideas that popped out from his head (just kept it, store it and finished it for another song)
