Just the other night I found a good card I had no idea I had, so your presentation tonight tells me I have work to do on my organization. If college had made as much sense as you two I might not have left after two years.

Great conversation, lads. I'm an autograph collector. At the moment it's chaos! I have items in various locations and two different countries. For autographs that I've obtained in person, I've kept a record from at least the last decade of where and when I got the items signed, and on what (this is written down, rather than recorded on computer). I've started to use Excel (or equivalent) to record some signed items I've got signed. I will never use 'cloud' storage, nor any online companies - as they could be de-activated tomorrow, enforce a fee (or up their fees), or are prone to be either hacked (or forget password). I record it offline, and keep a back-up. As you both rightly point out, it's up to the individual how they want to organise their collection. I suppose it's how your brain is hardwired that will dictate the direction you go with the organisation of your items. I suppose you should be mindful that when we leave this mortal coil, the person who is tasked with going through your collection should be aware of how the collection is organised. Wishing you both a very Merry Christmas, and a safe and prosperous New Year (same goes to all viewers). 🙏

I have 3 tiers. PSA 10s in a 5" Binder of my best cards. Tier 2 are BCW shoeboxes with graded cards and magnetic holders inside, usually good cards but typically less than $100 in value. Tier 3 are 3200 top loader shoeboxes of low value vintage, 70s - 90s baseball/football rookies and stars and all the modern patch, refractors, parallels etc. of the modern era I've picked up. All tiers are organized by year/set oldest to newest.

Great show, snd even though I’ve watched you on previous shows on the same topic, there is always new information revealed.

Loved this discussion. Y’all have given me a lot to ponder . Thanks

I know there’s an export function of card data out of the PSA Registry site; there’s got to be a way to import it into VCP. That would be golden.

That would be great.

The system is absolutely necessary. I organize my vintage sets in binders, so self-explanatory. For HOFers (autographs, other RC, relics) Braves (same) other milestone club members, and my UNC basketball stuff- I organize by last name alphabetically. Granted the HOFers are in the top 2 drawers of The Big Unit, Braves in one half middle left (oversized stuff in other half: Perez Steeles, etc.), Basketball stuff bottom right. You get the idea. Everyone needs organization to their collection, especially the bigger that it gets!

Danny’s ideas on organization clearly illustrates the difference how a player collector vs a set builder thinks and organizes.

Some basketball sets (early 90s) were put out in team order, so you could order by card # and they would automatically be in team set. Mike could you talk about the furniture pieces behind you, I’m assuming you store cards in them. Where you found them, how you physically store the cards in them. How you physically store your slab cards. They almost look like old library card catalogs. Maybe there is a video about them that I’ve missed. I’ve been looking for furniture pieces that could store slab cards but all the ones Ive found have drawer dimensions that are too small.

On Mike's YT Channel ('Baseball Collector') he uploaded a video of he and his family making 'the beast' (the cabinet that stores the cards). I think he also goes into the questions you have in that video, or a future video. 👍

My system is to organize my basketball collection by teams. Then I will organize by player. At some point I am separating by year depending on how I feel on a given day.

I’m the least ocd collector you will find. Most of my sets are in order by team some by number. I also have nothing catalogued

Really? That surprises me

In the case of my complete sets. I know what I have. No need to track it. In the case of my RedSox collection it’s easier to write down what I don’t have

As I’ve stated before on your channel , I collect all 4 pro sports rookies 1979-present. I organize them by year in this order Baseball, Basketball, Football and Hockey. I like to look at the evolution of elite players in the past 40 with Gretzky, Henderson, Montana from the early 80’s, to Rice, Olajuwon and Roy in the mid 80’s to Jeter, Kobe, Duncan and Manning in the 90’s to Brady, Lebron, Ovechkin and Steph in the 00’s, to more ultra modern with McDavid and Mahomes. You forgot how many great players from all 4 sports we’ve seen in our lifetime. I see my Marino rookie and you can’t help but wonder what his legacy would had been if he got a ring?. Or compare Montana and Brady rookie and who’s the GOAT? Or my Clemens rookie and how he is the greatest pitcher of his era, but tainted by steroid accusations. It’s cool to see them all layed out year by year.
