The original was from Ray Stevens, who was a novelty songwriter who actually started before Weird Al. and still creates to this day. You should do a deep dive on his repertoire. Guitarzan, It's Me Again Margaret, The Streak, are just drops in the lake of his creations. Oh, and BTW, check the animation. The little boy looks like BamBam from the Flintstones, the grandma looks like Granny, who had a dog named Precious, and the parents are The Jetsons, as well as the background people are the band itself.

As a Southern Woman™️ who grew up in a family that loved their music and parody, I grew up on Ray Stevens. I absolutely adore this. Home Free did an amazing job, and the animation has the same feel to it as the original mv. Mississippi Squirrel Revival was always one of my favorites. 😂 Even if just in your free time, I recommend listening to his music. I think you'll get a kick out of it.

That was such a fun rendition of this song. And loved the animation! Tim is perfect for the narrating of this song. This was originally done by Ray Stevens in 1984. There is a live version of this you should check out. He is a country & pop singer-songwriter & comedian known for his novelty hits such as "Gitarzan", "Ahab The Arab", "Along Came Jones", "The Streak" & others. But he also did a few serious songs such as "Misty" & "Everything Is Beautiful" which he won a Grammy for in 1970.

The call and response bits in this are fantastic! BTW, the guys falling asleep are the HF guys. Chance got the blush when the sailor was mentioned. This is a great video, but you really need to watch the original with Ray Stevens. I work for a church and we had a bushy tailed rodent attend a funeral-and he was late for the service so he ran up front to view the body while the clergyman was getting ready to give the benediction. Luckily, the squirrel realized his faux pas of running around during a prayer, and stood up with perfect posture and folded his little paws under his chin. I guess he got embarrassed because he took off running under the pews of this well attended service. People were jerking their feet off the floor and loudly gasping as the little fellow passed by them in his search for the exit. The pastor and the organist literally fell out of the sanctuary door (right outside of my office) doubled over with laughter. They had held it together as long as they could.

Ray Stevens wrote and record the original version of this song in 1984. His video for it is very funny. Like a few others have said, you should react to some of his other songs. Most of his work is funny (Shriner’s Convention is very popular and actually loved by Shriners around the country) but he also does gospel and a song he wrote and released which kind of goes under the radar is the wonderful song “Everything is Beautiful”

So I kinda feel you, even though I agree only partially.

Ray Stevens is a songwriting and comedic genius! HF did him proud. A bit of context if you react to The Streak. Stevens wrote this in 1974 (I think) when the nation was captivated by the phenomena of streaking ie running nude in a public area. Yeah, it was a big fad! Stevens' song was a hit on both country and pop charts.

This is a rare case where I actually like the original better than the acapella cover. Although a good chunk of that is the original _video_ which is hilarious. And yes, Ray's lyrics can be a bit on the wild side at times. I mean, hello, Sittin' Up With the Dead.

Great reaction as usual! This is a bizarre song. Ray Steven’s also sang the Streak. 😂. I hear you on the Crazier Life CD. There are a few really good gems though like Stand By Me, I’ve Seen and Your Man. I don’t see where you have reviewed their new Collaboration with Don McLean, Vincent. It’s to die for. I got to hear songs from Bastiens debut at the Rumble and Opry. While I will miss Austin, the Band chose well. He’s a genuinely nice person and sings those high notes. Plus he has that theatrical high energy on stage that they need. I’ll be seeing them a few days before you down the road in Redding. Now that I’ve heard their new sound, I’m back to being really excited about that. In the meantime Austin’s been putting out some cute songs. I’m hoping he can get videos going as well. 🎶💕

It's okay not to vibe all of their songs or albums. My least liked album from them (aside from Christmas albums) is Dive Bar Saints. I really enjoy some of them and the rest is fine to listen to (just my personal preference). And I don't like Christmas songs in general (with very few exeptions). Which of the songs of the new album did you try and didn't vibe? No need to to suggest one of those they released of it until now if you already tried. By the way, they release Your Man this friday. I think you might also like Champagne Taste (On A Beer Budget). It's got a similar story-telling vibe as this one. And it's an original (by Tim). I also enjoyed Remember My Name (original by Austin) and Road Sweet Road (by Austin and Tim). Also, What's It To You on Austin's channel by Austin, Tim, Jeffrey East and Chris Chatham. Or My Maria, also on Austin's channel featuring Tim and Chris Chatham on the vocals. I'm a bit surprised that you haven't reacted to the last one yet.

The original song by Ray Stevens is from January 1969, and it was a hoot back then. Home Free kicked it up a notch. BTW, Ray has seen (and approved of) this version too! You may not have the background to recognize the cartoon characters, but dang it, you should have picked up on the Home Free characters in several sequences! The other characters look like they came from either The Jetsons, or The Flintstones; they're pretty interchangeable. I'm not sure who Sister Bertha Better-than-you came from but I'm sure it was also a cartoon feature.

Although Ray Stevens was noted for his novelty songs ("Sittin'' up with the dead", "Along Came Jones"), he also has a gorgeous album of gospel music, the song "Everything is Beautiful" & his rendition of "Misty" is unforgettable. I love this song & video (the name of the church makes me laugh every time). BTW, you won't see Austin in October; Adam Bastien has now started with HF & appears in a video with them in his debut appearance at the Grand Ole Opry.

Ok, a few hints....the guy sleeping in the chair is the narrator all grown up. Whoever did the artwork has a heavy Hanna-Barbera style influence. As mentioned by others, Home Free is sleeping in the pews. Listen to the original and this one a few more times, the lyrics are even funnier than the bits you managed to touch on. Like "The First Self-Righteous Church"!

I have to admit that this is not one of my favorites, although I do enjoy their humor. On the re-recording issue, I think the songs you mentioned are all from the "As Seen on TV" album which reprises their Sing-off performances. I wonder if you would enjoy the ones on the "Crazy(er) Life" album. Those seem to have a much richer sound than the originals. I especially like I've Seen and the newly released version of Your Man. Give one a try.

Totally get your point at 1:20. You being someone who specialises in acapella arrangements (correct if wrong), catch the interesting choices groups make with runs, melodies, and techniques. Some songs like all artists have, are simply nice to listen to but you may not pick up something worth making a whole video about.
@dovos85723 ай бұрын
it would be unreasonable to expect that EVERY song is a banger and the new best the band released. same with any form of art, movies, performances and so on. it is just unrealistic to expect perfection in everything you see, hear or do.

In general, Darren Rust is the arranger for Home Free. They have called him their sixth member. Only if someone else does an arrangement do they list them. I totally get not being completely into their re-recordings of their older material. Some of them don't speak to me quite as much. I think their decision to re-record has to do with Austin's decision to leave active touring and the need to level set as ABB comes into the band.
