I believe Lionel, MJ, & Prince were some of the first black artists that were getting airtime on MTV in the early 80s.

@@jp3813 That's not saying much since MTV started in 1981 and MJ and LR were some of the biggest artists around at the time. What I'm trying to say is why do you have to make it about skin colour all the damn time? You're either a great artist or not - skin colour is irrelevant. It's why we're living in a clown world at the moment - thanks to the lefties in power people have been made OBSESSED about skin colour. Sorry for my rant - but I get so pissed off with the politics of it all getting shoved down our throats all the time at the moment.

@@TheT0nedude You're letting modern politics cloud your awareness of pop culture history. David Bowie himself called out MTV for not playing videos of black artists. It was a big deal at that time b/c that was the reality of the era. Try doing some research first.

The "ceiling dance", made with a revolving room, was well-known in the '50s, thanks to the amazing dancer Fred Astaire in the movie "Royal Wedding". In the '80s movie "Breakin'2: Electric Boogaloo", they also have a similar scene. Yes, that's Rodney Dangerfield at the end, and once again, I suggest that you guys watch his video for his song" Rappin' Rodney". It's so funny, and Pat Benatar has a cameo appearance. 🙂

The 80's was such a fun time, and the decade after probably had the best transition from one to the next. Entertainment back in the 80's seem to be more emotional, and have more energy. I will miss this decade as this was my teen to adult time. Probably the best time ever in my life! My life was a video you could almost say... There were bad times, but just too many good times overshadowed any bad times. People were very positive back then before these last 15 years or so of PC culture. Best era ever!

@@patriciamcelroy3581 "Some"? Popularity brings haters, hence every decade got dissed. People got sick of 70s disco so much that it resulted in a riot. 90s bubblegum pop was often the butt of jokes. But the truly great ones endure. 80s nostalgia has taken hold of pop culture from the 2000s to today.

@@jp3813 disco was also unfairly trashed. Were some of the songs bad? Yes. Some songs are lousy in any era. There were heavy racial and homophobic overtones to the disco “backlash”. The Bee Gees weren’t even a disco group and they got blackballed from US radio for many years. Back to the ‘80s, I grew up then and I’m most appalled at the hairstyles. 🤣
@jp3813
@jp3813 2 жыл бұрын
@@patriciamcelroy3581 At least the hairstyles aren't boring. It's one of the few decades that people can dress up as in Halloween. The Bee Gees weren't exclusively disco, but they did become a disco group for a while. All I could think of is that gag in Airplane (1980) where the DJ says "Disco lives forever".

He does have a great voice. They got the technique for this ceiling dance from Fred Astaire. They rotate the room along with the affixed camera. Lionel even uses the same transitional moves while it's rotating. Look for "Fred Advance Famous ceiling dance" on KZbin. I kinda feel like Lionel wrote this song just so he could do this cool technique, and perhaps pay homage to Astaire.

MTV had a “making of the video” video for this one. There were actually three rooms built for the video: one normal, one upside-down, and one - about 1/4 size of the others, that rotated like a giant hamster wheel with the camera attached to it to rotate with the room. The third is the one they used for the scenes where they climb the walls and transition from the walls to the ceiling. For the scenes where he has one foot on the “floor” and one on the “wall”, he’s waiting for it to rotate enough so that he can step fully on the wall (now the de facto “floor”). Really a cool process, especially for the 80s.

This is such a fun song. Love Lionel Richie. I didn't catch it the first time I watched this but the first guy who was having dinner with the girl and came into the room to see was going on was Cheech Marin of Cheech and Chong. And of course the other guy was Rodney Dangerfield. The effect that did with dancing on the ceiling is an homage to a famous dancing scene by Fred Astaire in the movie Royal wedding. I don't if they still do it but Universal Studios used to have on their studio tour a set that shows how the effect was done to create the illusion of dancing on the walls and ceiling.

Omg, love that song. A song from way back for 80’s aerobics. 👍🏻

The 80s werre full of dance, pop, new romantics , and rock music. Only my opinion is one of the best decades for music. I was there.

Fred Astaire was dancing on the ceiling in 1951 in the movie Royal Wedding, you should react to that scene as it is on KZbin easily found.

Do you know what this video made me realize? That MTV isn't what it was, anymore. We were stationed in Italy from 82-86... during the MTV Era. Even Italy had a version called Video Musica. Sad that we don't get to see the artists interpretation now.

What a great artist Lionel Richie is, and what a kind person outside of his stardom as well. No one has ever said one bad word about this man.

Rodney Dangerfield at the end was the icing on the cake. You guys should check out some of his stand ups when you have the time. He was the King of Comedy. I loved his interactions with Johnny Carson.

I loved how you guys immediately smiled when the full music kicked in, that's how it felt back in the day when this song was an absolute must at every party. It is exactly like Amber said at the beginning: "Lionel Richie is pretty legit!" And yes, that's Rodney Dangerfield from Caddyshack!! Lol hilarious!!

Love this song. Whenever I hear this, I think of my '86 Mets! The song was a hit right around Sept./Oct. of that year.
