If you wanted MTV to play your stuff you needed a novel video and this is a great example of that. Bands just had a lot of fun with videos back in those earlier days. Other examples of innovative videos were Peter Gabiel's Sledgehammer and Dire Straights Money for Nothing which were both MASSIVE hits and played to death everywhere - you couldn't get away from them!

That was back when music videos were relatively new so they were wearing out those effects, same way like when you discover a new food you like and you binge on it until it makes you sick. There was some creative work but by comparison to modern videos you might get the reaction you just got.

They were originally called "Huang Chung" which is Chinese for ":yellow bell" they changed to Wang Chung because people were always looking for them under "W" in record stores. The video was done by Kevin Godley and Lol Creme who were the MTV video kings in the 80s and was actually banned in places due to fears it would trigger epileptic seizures. They also did Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" and many other great videos.

Thank goodness, I thought I was the only one who physically cannot handle this video without getting queasy. Thing is, I can watch other stop-motion stuff like "Sledgehammer" just fine, so it must just be something with the particular frame rate or the "strobing" between two frames that gets me.
