I never really thought about an “en passant pin” before. It makes sense and I’m sure I’ve encountered it but never really stopped to think how unique it is
@lequinowАй бұрын
Eric was lucky his opponent did not play f5. The temptation of playing en passant is far greater than the mild inconvenience of losing a piece in the process.

Thanks Eric!! I appreciate you making more of these, we know you've been pretty busy lately. My favorite parts of these tend to be when you take a moment to consider potential moves that are bad and show us the thought process behind ruling them out before analyzing a move you want to consider more seriously. It's more natural for me to rule out bad moves than spot the best ones so those lines of reasoning are helpful.

That "en passent pin" is a fun edge case that a lot of chess engine programmers need to watch out for (the standard testing suites include a position to test against it) because it's so easy to overlook that it would be an illegal move if it was your king behind the two pawns. The usual logic is just to check whether the piece that moved was obstructing an attack against the king, but if you do that naively then in this specific situation it will say "no it wasn't because there was another piece behind it", even though that piece is also being removed.

I have to say that over the course of this speedrun, I have been steadily improving my ability to anticipate moves (although I can't attribute it all to this series, it definitely contributes.) In the first game, I didn't see the Nxf6+ move that Eric also missed, but as soon as he mentioned overlooking it, I instantly saw why it was the right move. I also was anticipating his push of the h pawn and black's blunder with h5, which I did see would be a blunder, but I also recognized that black really didn't have good choices at that point. I haven't actually played against a human opponent in 3-4 months now, instead working out certain openings and trying them against bots of various levels. I will return to playing against others soon, and I expect a rating jump when I do. The "Canal Attack" in game 2 is referred to as the Moscow Variation on Lichess. Game 3, when Eric said he was thinking about Ra1, I thought, "Has he lost his mind?" He went ahead and played it, which I confirmed by the engine just blunders the rook. White missed it though. All he had to do was to play Rxa1, and if bxa1=Q, Qxa1. Eric needed to get the other rook to the a file first. He didn't go that far in his analysis, though.

I love this speedrun series. It is fascinating and educational, especially with Eric's clear commentary. But I've never seen a speedrun and can't find much online about it. What is the endpoint? A loss? (Probably not.) A level? I wouldn't think it'd be the player's actual level. But with Eric I could watch endlessly. ;-)

i thought when black plays Bg4 attacking your queen after you put your bishop back with Bc4 in this scandy where black delays the recapture of the d-pawn it was free to play for tricks with Bb5 because c6 then dxc6 and if black plays Bd7 then just repeat and play f3. but i guess black can also play Nd7 and maybe the f3 line is preferable for white.

Actually that second opponent's nick-name is not that difficult when you look carefully. I don't speak German but the first part of the nick is obviously Schwein, which is Pig, and the second part - steigerz - looks typical, most likely pronounced 'shty-gerts' or 'sty-gerts'.
