You know what it is? This game nailed the atmosphere even better, because I was so much more scared of how well the area you were exploring was detailed with the darkness, then hearing the sound of lights flickering which for a second made you think there was a monster about to show up. That was well done, but the actual threats, sure, they were scarier looking, but there's just something more unsettling of cute looking creatures becoming terrifying monsters that it just sticks with you more. The chase here was more intense and scary, but when that bird chases you in the original it just feels more disturbing. The way it just stares at you, following your every movement while its waiting to arrive on the platform, and how you turn to see it chasing you really fast on the little maze bridge, all without making a sound as it does so, that moment really sticks with you and somehow makes you shiver more, while the remake bird just gets your blood pumping with fear. Personally, if they somehow make a version of this game with this atmosphere, while also with keeping the cute designs, but somehow making them monstrous, then I can see this being a really good game. I mean, it can be done. If someone like Oda, the creator of One Piece, can make someone goofy looking like Big Mom look like such a terrifying beast from hell when she's fighting Kid and Law, then I'm sure someone out there can make those cute mascots into something genuinely frightening without having to go into FNAF sequels levels of pushing the 'scary design' thing further and further with each installment.

My one complaint with this remake is the absence of arguably the only scary part of the original. The part where before chasing you, Opilla Bird just stands there staring at you, and slowly approaches while you wait for the button to turn on so you can run.

Yeah the developer has never made games before and he didn’t know how to make that type of pathfinding. This is also the reason why there is no drone in here yet. He has stated that he will refine chapter one if it gets enough attention and he will make chapter two after that.

Still sad it ended up disappointing with what I felt was a pretty odd and sudden tone shift when Garten of Banban had potential, it's just under utilized. I mean I still think the original is fun to watch people's reactions to chapter 1, but meh, rest is clearly a miss for me. This though? This is a great recreation, and idk why but the thing I'm most impressed with was the attention to the notes. The dev used a crumpled paper decal to make it look used/grungy. They visually make sense too, like some are actually handwritten like the drone repair form and some are typed like the formal construction report. It adds a bit of dynamism to the worldbuilding and mood-setting.

It is very important to remember that making something totally original from scratch is always gonna be harder than remaking it and building up on the original idea. I honestly love this remake, at the very least in terms of settings and atmosphere. In the original, it felt incomplete because of the empty, blank spaces and the art on the walls actually didn’t help at all. Even with it being a shut down building, it didn’t feel shut down or abandoned, it felt unfinished and didn’t really allow for great immersion. Especially with the drone mechanics added. But this remake really nails the abandoned feeling, the empty spaces feel that way on purpose, and the populated spaces feel properly disheveled and at times suspiciously untouched. Like Opilla’s nest, that looked so much more fun with the network of tubes, that in the remake area just horrifying to get through because of the anxiety, and seeing just the eyes of the enemy? So fun for a horror. However, I will say this Opilla bird didn’t feel the same, uncanny valley, living organism type of vibe. It was cool don’t get me wrong. But the original tilting its head, quietly observing you, even pausing before attacking sometimes before silently following after you? Opilla was the only thing done right in the original and I would love to see her mechanics in this remake’s atmosphere

this is going to be an interesting venture for sure! Quite excited for it (like most videos of Ryan) Still interested in seeing him come back to Pizza Tower and/or Alice: Madness Returns sometime, if the likes allowed for it. In the last video, someone mentioned Ryan once said he won't do Omori because of how long that game is-- which is a pity, but understandable. As for a recommendation for something more unusual, there's Clash: Artifacts of Chaos, which is quite remarkable for having a style all its own with bizarre monster designs and solid gameplay. Or for something more in the horror avenue, there's a few old games by name of The Suffering and The Suffering: Ties that Bind, that are definitely worth looking into.
