This might not be too related, but Kirby has a Steve/block tech with a one block high block. Kirby can use his up B right next to a block, drift towards the block before ascending, and he'd instantly do the end of his recovery to send out that grounded projectile. It's situational, but it can make kirby's cutter projectile somewhat decent.

Pinning this because I just tested it and it looks really cool! Similar input to EPIC too, it's like the Luigi thing. Not to mention the projectile itself destroys blocks so if there are 2 walls in the way, you can dtilt the bottom block, then do this to break the one in front. Thanks for the info! Makes me wish Kirby had a real projectile like that all the time 😔

I think a problem with Steve, is that its hard to lab counterplay in training mode when you have to manage two controllers in order to mine and place blocks, and then quickly switch back to your other controller to use Steve's blocks for your anti-steve tech before the block breaks.

That's definitely fair, honestly I feel like half this game's problems would be fixed if we had a proper record function... Training modpack helps a ton though since you can set save states with certain resources. You can also use the Yuzu emulator's TAS scripts, a Titan One gaming device, or the Ease of Training Mod/Enhanced Training Mode Mod to record basic inputs... but all those methods have flaws and are inaccessible to most people. Labbing stuff with friends who play the game/people who go to your locals is always an option at least but yeah I really wish this stuff was easier :(

GOD I LOVE THE WHYDO STEVE AND THE WHYDO BRAWLER. I mean I also like the WhyDo pythra more than any other pythra but oh my god watching you on characters with that potential, for insane strategies both in powerful and silly ways... You're the reason that I made brawler one of my mains in ultimate back when I hadn't even played any other platform fighters and sucked even more at translating my platformer experience into smash.

It’s honestly a shame that the rest of the cast can’t dash cancel off a 2 high block, not because I hate Steve so much that I don’t want him to get new tech, but because it would create cool, more intricate counterplay. Steve’s would get punished for recklessly placing blocks or could use them to bait dash cancel options in neutral

4:10 note that the moment you go into run (which for the average char is about 11 frames, sheik having the lowest of 7 and robin the highest of 16) you can do whatever you want. It's when you don't go into run that you can't act for about a quarter of a second

I show a demonstration of that later in the video, but I believe it only applies to shield/options out of shield. When I tested with run and dash back, all characters attacked after frame 14 iirc.

Yeah I've been testing it and it seems Sheik does have to wait the full quarter second to jab, same as Robin. If there's a way to make Sheik jab faster than frame 15 let me know & I'll add a correction under the vid :0

Sheik cannot jab forward, but she can go into the skid animation on f8, which than can be cancelled into a reverse jab (or tilt attack)

I love that most of the cancel options in smash are generally just to make really basic inputs easier. Like how up smash/special out of shield only exist because you can do them out of jumpsquat which was only done so they wouldn't be frame perfect with tapjump on. Same idea with the side special and fsmash out of dash, as well as tilt cancels which are a side effect of the shorthop buffer system.

I expect the reasoning for the choice of moves you can do out of initial dash are either moves that you could do to cancel jumpsquat (but you don’t have to jump cancel bc ultimate) and intentionally lenient input windows, since casuals shouldn’t be expected to do frame perfect side b’s and f smashes if they want to do it without dashing forwards first
