From the sound it, he would have been able to show off his skills a lot more if Eddie wasn’t such a micro managing control freak. It even got so bad that he recorded most of the bass parts himself on “Van Halen III” and the new tracks on “Best of Both Worlds”

Mike is a very good player, but let's face it...people were listening to VH for Eddie's incredible guitar playing. I bet if you asked 100 VH fans to name their favorite thing about Mike, 98 of them would reply "his backing vocals." That's not a knock on his playing skills, it's just that the early VH sound had those incredible choruses. Mike is a lot like Bill Wyman or Adam Clayton, not really flashy and always in the pocket. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love would be another good VH bass song to cover.

Yup, those are two of best songs. Tons of groove and swing. Alsp, I'm The One has some great walking bass lines and In a Simple Rhyme has some tasty runs in it. I really like Mike's playing, especially on some of the old demos from before they got signed. You can really hear him clearly on those.

1978, 8 years old, Van Halen I came out and was the 1st album I ever purchased. I had already been listening to a lot of rock and prog rock on the radio, but boy howdy, did Van Halen turn my world upside down. Nothing was the same after Eddie arrived. Having said that, Michael Anthony is a grossly underrated bass player and his vocal contributions are what made Van Halen, Van Halen. I always grew up sort of believing that he didn't really contribute much to the band as a bass player, but all these years later with you guys putting the spotlight on his bass lines, man did he do a fantastic job. Was he a Geddy Lee or Billy Sheehan or Steve Harris or Chris Squire? Not by a long shot, but he was integral to what made the band the powerhouse that they were. Thanks so much for covering some Michael Anthony! ❤Rip Eddie 🖤

I can hear his bass playing on all the first six albums. You have to pay attention, but they are pretty obvious to me. That's not a slight on anybody, but I think people generally can't hear bass playing unless they can feel it. His bass playing on the breakdown to "In a Simple Rhyme" and the second guitar solo for "Whiskey...", both from WACF are amazing.

In my objective opinion, Mike is the bass player van halen needed, a solid foundation in the rhythm section. It is not an art to play 100 notes, but it is easy to overdo it in a song. There are several bass parts in van halen's repertoire that are not easy and require practice. Even if Mike didn't shine with creativity, that's OK, all Eddie has to do is do it, and the band has passed into hard rock legend.

It isn't a very good cover... I'm just saying, with van halen you can judge how good an album by them is based on the cover. Fair warning has the worst album cover by them up until balance which is atrocious. It's true, look at van halen III and balance and different kind of truth. And fair warning. The cover art makes me puke. The music on all them is equally bad. This song is the only good song on fair warning. Crap album otherwise.

Like I said, I was never a Van Halen fan, but apparently there was a reason they chose this artwork for the album cover. www.vhnd.com/2011/05/02/the-story-behind-van-halens-fair-warning-album-cover-art/ Also, I’m not one to defend Van Halen, but “Mean Street” and “Unchained” are a couple of pretty solid songs off this album.
